Great deal on a feature packed audio interface. Not only is it a good audio interface but Amir from Audio Science Review also found its DAC to be very capable.

Is this the same one? https://www.amazon.com.au/Behringer-UMC204HD-Interface-Micro…

    $126 delivered from Amazon UK

    • Even better! Updated.

  • I got the other model UMC202HD and Behringer is quite solid equipment.

  • The 2x2 version can be had for $106 if that's better suited to someone's needs.

    • Yup, these deals have been around for years.

    • those does not have stereo monitoring be careful.

coz I only have 1 mic input, and I want to monitor it as stereo out put via the headphone, but it only outputs one channel.

Am I missing something to get it to ship here to Tassie?

Shipping to a house and not a parcel locker or po box? I know I've had this issue when my parcel locker is the default address

      • It's odd. Amazon seems to hate me. I don't have it set to a PO Box. Thanks for the suggestion though!

It worked fine selecting shipping direct to my home address here in Queensland.

Maybe some thing is fishy when it comes to your home address which makes the Amazon ordering system think that it's not a valid address location. Unless it thinks that all Tassie postal addresses aren't valid.

Not only is it a good audio interface but Amir from Audio Science Review also found its DAC to be very capable.

The DAC is passable, but the headphone amp is noisy, and you need to be clear on that for prospective buyers because most of them will assume they're going to get great sound out of the headphone jack.

The other thing to note is the dynamic range on these Behringer interfaces is around 108 dB, so there is room for some clipping on low sensitivity mics with difficult distortion characteristics.

If that's what you're pairing with, the Audient EVO 4 is $175-$200 on Amazon and may be a better option.

Here's the updated review as well, which throws in some caveats about distortion characteristics for both the DAC and the ADC:

I've had this interface purchased from Amazon UK, returned it about a month later. I just didn't like the unit and surprisingly I am getting a lot of noise from the headphone out. YMMV

My use case is to have it primarily as my audio interface:
    - Rode Rodecaster Pro
    - Mac & PC
    - DT990 Pro, HD700

    What I like:
    - Price!
    - Plenty of in/out configs

    What I didn't like:
    - Built quality wasn't that great, dials and buttons feel cheap, enclosure is light
    - Insufficient pre-amp power to drive the Rode Procaster
    - A lot of noise from the Headphone out

    • I had the 4 input version of this, it picked up a lot of USB background noise during playback. While it didn't affect the mic preamps, it was annoying enough for me to try different power plugs (in case of dirty power) and a new PSU to no avail.

Agree that build quality is OK only. It bit the dust after falling off my desk about 60cm onto carpet so that was pretty disappointing (partial user error of course, but still…)

I would add to the cons that Behringer is generally a pretty shitty company, even if they do make some very cheap and feature-packed devices.

    • I mean a Rodecaster Pro is 700 something dollars. Is this 6 times worse?

      • Sorry It’s supposed to be Procaster. I’ll need to edit lol

  • Is this just a MIDI interface or is it also a USB DAC?.

    • +1

Also a DAC, has 2 combo mic/line inputs on the front, 2x1/4" and 4xRCA out on rear.

    • +1

      DAC and ADC, both.

      • Thanks. I've decided to buy it.

I wonder how well it can play MIDI in old DOS games through DOSBox or if it can do it at all. I know those Roland Soundcanvas can play midi in DOS games but i'm not sure about this.

        • +1

I don't think this does that. It has a midi I/O for connecting external MIDI equipment (keyboards, synthesizers etc) but no built-in sound generating capabilities.

          • @findingbargains: I thought that's what the USB cable was to connect it to a Windows 10 PC to be able to send MIDI data to it from MIDI files. It does have a built in 24bit DAC. And there is a Windows 10 driver available for it. You connect it straight to a PC. I was just hoping it might be able to play general MIDI sound through DOS games too but i don't know.

            • @hollykryten: Yes, but the MIDI data from a PC is to go to the 'outside' world (e.g. keyboard synth), which is what this audio interface facilitates. Therefore this can send MIDI data from your MIDI files on the PC to trigger your external keyboard/synth. This device does not have it's own built-in sound generation capabilities which would be needed for it to play MIDI files. Remember MIDI files are just instructions to some sound generating device like a synthesizer or a drum machine, which this is not. You are probably confusing this with the old internal sound cards which often featured a simple onboard yamaha FM synth on a chip, which MIDI files could trigger to play music.

              • @findingbargains: It may not be able to directly decode the MIDI data instruments like a Roland Soundcanvas can through the USB interface. However this has a 24bit computer DAC chip onboard. As been stated it's not just a MIDI interface device but also a computer 24bit DAC with a headphone amp. Even most computer onboard sound is a 24bit DAC. It's just midi to wavetable synthesis conversion.

A DAC sound chip connected to a PC also can act as a normal sound input and output interface for the PC. I mean for example Realtek onboard sound is a 24bit DAC and it acts as computer sound audio interface which can play MIDI through the Windows sound mixer direct to the DAC. It just receives the digital data to the DAC chip (which Windows converts the MIDI instruments to wavetable audio) and then converts it to analogue sound which is played through the sound outputs. This has a built in 24bit audio DAC the same sort of thing which you find on a computer onboard sound. That's what what the UMC204HD driver is for it makes it act as a computer DAC but instead connected through USB. I've seen review videos of this on Youtube and once the USB cord is connected and the Windows 10 driver is installed it shows up as a normal audio sound input and output playback device through the Windows sound system. It should send the audio signal from the Windows 10 sound output to the UMC204HD DAC to play music and what have you through the headphone output jack or main output on the back whichever is selected. It's basically a computer DAC chip once connected through USB with the Windows 10 driver instead.

None of these modern motherboard onboard DAC chips have a Yamaha MIDI sound chip like some of the old soundcards did. It just uses the Windows sound system midi to wavetable synth instead.

I guess it can play general MIDI but through the Windows sound output system like an onboard motherboard DAC does. Windows just converts the MIDI data to wavetable sound output and then sends it to the DAC. It might be better than my motherboards onboard Realtek DAC.

  • How would this compare to a Roland Quad-Capture? I have one and want to get a second interface for more inputs.

    • Nevermind, reading through the comments, I answered my own question. Might have to grab another Roland.

I got it today. I've been playing my Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro 250ohm and DT770 Pro 250ohm headphones with Hi-Fi music streamed from TIDAL. In my experience it sounds great. I don't seem to get any distortion and the sound is way loud enough. Not bad for the price.

Just make sure that the source music is Hi-Fi and it will be no problems.
