Hey this guy is a Commie!

Commie! Commie! Traitor to our country!

When was the last time you read The Age?

It has been quickly falling into line behind conservative interests since being purchased by Nine (whose Chairman is Peter Costello, ex-Liberal Federal Treasurer).

Not as bad as NewsCorp papers yet, but that's because they're trying to maintain the appearance of being non-partisan, while be decidedly not. On the plus side, the editor doesn't have much love for Scomo (plenty in the Liberal party don't however), so at least there's no sycophantic editorials.

      • Everyday brother! I subscribe lol

    • No go given the top deals on dunny paper lately.

      Sorry Costello.

    ABC website is free ;-)

Guessing you could listen to Joe Rogan for your news? It's free at least.

        • Triggered.

        • +1

Why would anyone listen to Gwyneth Paltrow for dudes?

          • +3

@ghoulie1: I have no clue haha, I tried listening to Rogan a few times, and I don't get who wants to listen to a guy rant on about his feelings and opinions. Seems so strange. Even more so that some people respect his opinions and beliefs!

Anyway, time to have some more brain dust

You prefer Rupert and conservative nut jobs to tell you what to think, I take it.

No wonder you're furious, little George.

Make comment on a media outlet and triggered lefties respond with personal attacks lol.

I'd pay good money for woke propaganda.

    Isn't it free online already?

    • Not all of it

  • +1

Looks like it's applicable to The Sydney Morning Herald (SMH) also.

    • Yep. One login will get you access to Age, SMH, Brisbane Times, WA Today and whatever other news is published by them (but not AFR)

      • +1

If that's the case, Brisbane Times may be a better deal for some (if you want Digital only) - $1.95/week for 3 months (Starter Digital) vs. $2.90/week for 6 months (Digital Premium).

You can also access The Age for free by using https://12ft.io/

    • Is this site safe? thanks for the link, I've literally blocked any news sites that have a paywall from my news feed but so often an article shows up in search only to show 3 lines it's frustrating as hell.
I would pay $40-$50 a year of it meant I didn't have to see ads and the funds were distributed based on articles I read (proportional) you used to get 10 free articles per month from each site but that's gone as far as I can tell.

      • Mate you could try this app..could be what you are looking for https://www.inkl.com/

        It’s legit: https://www.afr.com/companies/media-and-marketing/inkls-ques…

        • +1

Actually looks pretty good but $15p/m is a bit more than I wanna pay given a majority of what I read is available free.
I'll have to explore some more and see if you can set multiple profiles like with a family Netflix. Could be good if you could split it between a few ppl. Thanks

      • I'm pretty sure that all it does is to access the article without javascript - doesn't seem to work on all sites but works with the Nine publications!

        • 12ft io?

The website actually tells you how it works, pretty interesting stuff imo.

    • Is "cancelfairfax" something political? What's the motivation here?

Genuine question as googling it reveleas only a bunch of scattered posts tagged like that.

    • +1

lol - Michael West. Has his own bias, but just keeps it far more hidden instead of disclosing.

    • I love those two

The real deal is getting your news for free from either of the following (or better yet, a selection of them).

    https://www.abc.net.au/news/
    https://www.theguardian.com/au
    https://thenewdaily.com.au/
    https://theconversation.com/au

Most of the good Fairfax journalists have jumped ship to one of these mastheads in the last few years anyway.

    • Sure, but they also have a fair bit of crap.

ABC and their everyday/lifestyle section is appalling. Why am I paying for that? Esp their BS articles where it's not clear what's going on till the end - an obvious policy decision - it's not meant to be a goddamn novel.

Conversation at times has crap too.

My primary source of news emanates from my navel lint.

  • +9

They should be paying you to read their biased rubbish.

    • Not to mention pages and pages and pages of ads

    • +2

Gees, Tony, you hardcore conservative, you.

    • Where should we go for our balanced news, o wise sage… er, "Tony"?

      • NewsCorp, clearly!

        • Now why didn't I think of that?
          Fair, balanced, non-partisan.
          Stand down.

  • +11

Have fun trying to cancel your subscription.

    • This should be on top

Just disable Javascript on The Age website and you can read all you want.

    • Thanks!

As much as Fairfax & Newscorp suck balls unfortunately sometimes they have articles worth reading if for no other reason than to hear a varied viewpoint but that aside they have a decent amount of 'journalists' on the ground and many times break news.
Not saying I'm happy about it, I'd like to see news organisations owned by people who primarily deal in truth and leave politics to the side as much as possible.
Why did we end up in this particular multiverse Hey? There's a utopia somewhere out there & wanna live in that one ;D

    • +1

Because people want stuff for free.

And then because other people offer cheap, generic stuff for free and get loads of viewers/readers, it makes it hard for those actually doing the work.

So then those doing the work have to make it more popular to get more viewers.

      And here we are!

A cheaper option is to go via your local library. If you know your library membership card number you can access a digital edition of the paper free of charge. For example, if you live in Boroondara in Melbourne: http://boroondara.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://theage.digi…

    • I never thought about that, I'm a member of both Maribyrnong & Mooney Valley Council librarys here in Melbourne. Have to give it a try and see how easy it is to navigate. Cheers :)

  • Student subscriptions are $4.30/month via unidays. If necessary, enroll in a free uni or TAFE course to get an email address and then defer so that you keep your student status for as long as possible.

  • Man so many comments bagging out Fairfax and newspapers in general. This is a decent bargain for those who are interested.

I was waiting for them to have a sale the past few years just to get the weekend papers (wife likes the mags), but they hardly ever go do. Herald Sun is always on sale.

    • I was waiting for them to have a sale the past few years just to get the weekend papers

Where have you been the past few years? They're always on sale in December and June.

  • Tory Maguire, the executive editor, browned out recently. Poor little guy.
