  • Citizen Eco-Drive Chrono CA4420-81E not in stock :(

Bummer that was quick. The Eco-Drive black & blue chronos @ $189 are still available from this post.

  • Just wondering, what's the point of solar when there's kinetic?

Solar will keep charging regardless if you wear it or not, as long as you leave somewhere so it can get some light.

      Also less moving parts.

    • Solar can be charged whenever you like, like on a window sill when you're wearing another watch.

Kinetic has to be worn to be charged (generally speaking, without resorting to faffing around).

Even Seiko makes way more solar than kinetic these days.

    • It would come down to just preference really but eco drive can be charged using any light source. I have an eco drive I bought a decade ago that I didn't wear for a year or two and when the battery went flat it just needed to spend a day or two by the window sill in good sunlight and up and ticking it went again… still ticking and keeping good time to this day.

    • Honestly in practical terms they're basically identical. Both of them with regular wear and usage will last an incredibly long time period before any form of maintenance is required. It's very hard to actually run the battery down the battery on solar watches. Eg on my g-shock i can use the light and bluetooth all i want and i don't think I've ever actually run before 75 percent battery power. This is without any special steps to charge it such as leaving it next to a window in the morning.

There's quite a bit of difference in the level of complexity. Kinetic has more moving parts. Kinetic movements have the rotor, wheels, rotors, bridges, coil, stator etc. for the generator and they are less mechanically robust for it. They are less reliable and require maintenance as the forces are far greater than what is typical in a quartz gear train and lubrication is more critical. I've seen broken pivots on the generating rotor on Kinetic watches that have been dropped for example.

There's a good reason Citizen went with solar (Eco-Drive) and Seiko is now producing many new models in solar and very few new Kinetic ones. The main downsides of solar is that is more limiting of the choice of dial design/finish (as light has to get through somewhere) and the extra solar panel layer behind the dial tends to mean the day/date wheels are sunk down quite low behind the window which can make it look a bit odd and in some instances is harder to read.

        • From an end user practical perspective they're pretty similar. Interesting to hear they're less robust, which makes sense i suppose. I feel like the kinetic range was more aimed towards people who feel some sort of romance from automatics, a sort of hybrid. It's interesting, but ultimately not something I would intrinsically value more than solar, especially in Australia.

    • Which model got both in it???

I thought watchmakers only pick one system for each model.

  • CA4420-81E looks really nice for the price

  • The Blue Tuna dial is rather disappointing in person

i'm inclined to agree. my sne537p's dial was this dull grey with a little bit of texture. thankfully the bezel was more interesting

    • The green looks awesome - that is my pick 😃
