ask your doctor if curves ™ are good for you

    • Hahaha! :)

  • -6

Why are they advertising it as WQHD (2560x1440). That is QHD, not WQHD. One would assume Samsung knows that

      • +2

That is incorrect, WQHD is 3440x1440, while QHD is 2560x1440

        • +4

          "QHD aka WQHD aka 1440p 2560 x 1440"

          Tom's is wrong then

        • +11

3440x1440 is UWQHD as in Ultrawide

        • +7

          You are incorrect.

WQHD is actually the more correct term for 2560x1440:
          https://news.samsung.com/global/everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-wqhd-super-amoled-display#:~:text=While%20the%20FHD%20(Full%20HD,with%20the%20same%205.1%E2%80%B3%20screen.

          https://www.t3.com/au/features/wqhd-qhd-2k-4k-and-uhd-whats-…

There are many explanations of this on the internet to explain the confusions. Basically WQHD is QHD.

I thought differently too until someone corrected me in the past.

          • +1

@meong: Whoever wrote that article can't even double the number 720 properly, but the main reason was to avoid confusion with qHD (quarter HD, another confusing choice).

UW-QHD really should be called WQHD, but until something changes the 'most correct' way would be to just list QHD and the aspect ratio.

            • +1

@jasswolf: there are many many arguments coming from both side with reasonable explanations. feel free to google them. i myself didnt understand it until i read more about it. however, feel free to choose which one is your definition of 2560x1440 but in the end the industry will keep using QHD and WQHD interchangeably.

what we're seeing consistently, 21:9 screens are described as UWQHD or just simply mentioned as Ultra-Wide. I still don't know how to best describe the 32:9 to distinguish it from the 21:9 though…

              • +6

@meong: 32:9 should be called FUWQHD

                • +2

                  @shabaka: I can't wait for MFUWQHD

                  • +6

@meong: is that the one that is so wide that it goes all the way around you? or is that STFUWQHD

I get those mixed up all the time

                    • @shabaka: I resign, i can't beat this! 😅

                • @shabaka: It's actually SUWQHD

                  • +5

                    @cille745: LBGTQHD

                    • @WT: If only I could upvote this comment more than once.

Once you get a curved one, you can't go back :)
However, just go the whole hog and seek out a G7 (which should lower in price this year)

    • +2

I agree. I never 'believed' in curved screens until I got one. A lot more comfortable than a 'flat' screen. Very noticeable when reading the outer corners of the screen.

      • +2

1 curved ultrawide is better than 2 flat 1080p screens too IMO. I replaced both my work and home setups (which were 2 x 1080p 27" monitors) with a 34" curved ultrawide and will never go back.

    • that just about sums it up.

      Get Curved™! Stay Curved™.

    • You meant to say G9.

Also, I have curved and non curved monitors, its not a game changer and can be annoying on multiple monitors setups.

Bad VA panel, look into the Dell VA instead… see pictures here:

    https://www.rtings.com/monitor/tools/compare/samsung-odyssey…

27" Dell goes for $299 during eBay sales (1-2 per month).

32" version is $449 in the same sales, but if you have to have the larger, less pixel dense model, it's still worth it over the G5 VA.

    • The Dell will be using a Samsung panel, can't be to many companies making curved VA gaming panels.

      • They're both Samsung/TCL panels, it's just this one is a much newer and better revision. The original G3 and the G5 were a disappointing cash-in on the G7 success.

Sadly, AU Optronics is miles behind with their VA tech, with their QHD 240Hz VA not really competing with current TCL tech: https://www.rtings.com/monitor/tools/compare/hp-omen-27c-vs-…

+1 for the Dell, just got it in the last deal. For anyone interested, my calibration curves at 67% brightness (200 nits), 75% contrast (default), and monitor OSD colours 100, 98, 100.

    • Have the Dell 3220DGF. Very happy.

  • +2

    i have a G7 but i wish I had a G6

  • Is curve for gaming only? No good for office stuff?

    • It's not ideal for productivity, particularly 1000R, but check here for a better compromise: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/11707834/redir

I use a 34in Samsung Ultra wide curved for work. It will change your life if you spend any amount of time in wide spreadsheets…. I also have a 27in 4k Dell since the Nov deals and I always find myself using the 34in curved for work stuff as just so much more space.

    • I used a curved monitor at work and it's excellent.

  • Give me a deal on the sexxy G7 pls

  • My Xiaomi just died, got a full refund offer under warranty. Do you guys think this would be a good replacement?

  • I don't suppose they let you return it if you simply didn't like it? Hard to see how curve it is without actually used it.

  • I had a terrible experience on Samsung portal and would warn others.

Card charged, goods waiting for be delivered 6 weeks, Samsung saying it's in transit their delivery partner saying Samsung has not handed over goods and I should cancel the order.

  • G5 27 or Gigabyte G27QC?

Really hoping Gigabyte would drop under $300 again as cheap ps5 120hz monitor with 4k downsampling support

You can also check it against the Gigabyte, but it doesn't fair much better: https://www.rtings.com/monitor/tools/compare/gigabyte-g27qc-…

I'd be picking between the Gigabyte and the Dell, where the Dell has a visible advantage for gaming.

From what I read here https://downloads.dell.com/manuals/all-products/esuprt_elect… and other forums

It does not accept 4k input over hdmi, thats why I on the fence with either Gigabyte or 4k tv

        • +1

Sorry, read this comment first thing in the morning and skimmed over the 4K downscaling request! You're probably better off sitting tight for the shift that's happening in the QHD 240Hz and 4K 120Hz monitor space.

Innolux has a great 4k 120Hz panel (as seen in the Gigabyte M28U), and those were floating around for close to $600 at one point, so I expect them to start returning to that range in Q2 as newer tech starts to roll in at the $800-$1400 price point.

You'll also have a 42" OLED panel option (basically a 2x2 21" FHD array) not far off that upper end if you have the budget to combine the best of both worlds.

The key points here are that the Samsung-branded VA option is rubbish and that you shouldn't be paying more than $350 for a QHD 144-165Hz LCD monitor in 2022, no matter the features.

The new g5 version just got announced for pre-order at mwave

    https://www.mwave.com.au/searchresult?w=G52a&cnt=40&srt=0&is…

Also people talking about g7 you should wait for new G8 NEO which should be out soon so either get that or g7 will drop a ton

    • These new G5s are going to be the same price as a current gen G7, but slightly worse performance it seems.

I prefer VA panels anyway for gaming ill wait for the current G7s to drop in price, hopefully soon.

      • Last time it got dropped in price was August last year :/ I am hoping too but don't know why they rarely get on sale.

      • G8 NEO which is the new G7 really will drop the price abit

  • Not sure if I would spend the money on this, reviews are poor, I would spend double and get a highly rated one!

  • M32Q is $529 @ Kogan today … personally I’d rather spend a little extra for a 100% better monitor

    • *My bad … it’s $529 for the M32QC …. But the M32Q has been that price before … so still wouldn’t get the G5

  • FWIW - Scorptec have the same deal for 32"
