Mercusys Halo AC1900 Dual Band Mesh Wi-Fi Router 2-Pack $129 @ ALDI

150

Aldi Special Deal this Saturday, as far as I can tell this is the Halo H50 G model: https://www.mercusys.com/au/product/details/halo-h50g/v1/2-p…

Might be handy for someone who needs a cheap mesh setup.

Can't speak for this system,, but typical mesh the nodes are less powerful and you require 1 in every second room for strong coverage otherwise speed drops off very quickly with distance. Supports Ethernet Backhaul which is good.

I have the Eero 6 (1 router and 2 extenders) and don't experience severe speed drops in my double story house. I have the router connected via ethernet downstairs and then the other two extenders upstairs (no ethernet connection). Speeds are totally fine throughout the house. Being close to the mesh gives me around 85-100 mbps download speeds and then a few rooms away from one maybe 75-85 mbps.

Only downsides are lack of ethernet ports on the extenders but I hardly use ethernet connections in the first place so that doesn't disturb me. Also the Eero app kinda sucks since you need to have a premium in app plan to check your download & upload data if that's something you're concerned with. Otherwise it works great!

Edit - Forgot to mention but Eero is a bit pricey compared to other options, but it's discounted somewhat often and stacks with 10% cashback via Shopback when available for extra savings.

Including the router though, that's 3 points, this is only 2 which in my opinion is too small for a typical house, but still may suit many people.
Also in my opinion 100mbps is quite slow, when a cheap MW6 can push 300-400mbps. Doesn't mean much when typical internet speeds are WELL below 100mps.

        • Yeah the Eero 6 is capable of more, I think it can reach 500mbps max. I think the problem is maybe with my internet plan or something? I'm not very tech-informed when it comes to this stuff. I'm with the Telstra NBN and its 'premium speed' plan and my connection is FTTC. Not sure if I should be getting greater speeds or something. I think my ethernet connected devices like my pc just seem to break the 100mbps and reaches max of 120mpbs I if I'm remembering correctly.

      • Hi NoiceMemes, just wanted to ask if the extender is switched off, do we need to make the connections to wifi again? Or does it remembers the connection.

        • Are you meaning if you switch off an extender and switch it back on will it remember that it's part of your mesh system? If so then yes, but you can always reconfigure or reconnect the extender using the app again if that fails. App is super simple to use.

    • I’ve got a TP M5 3pk at home, covers the whole house (3BR) including front and back yard (650+ m2). But you are right, 1 in every second room for max transfer speed, you can’t compared these with standard routers, completely different story.

  • How would this system compare to the Tenda Nova (another popular beand on here)?

    • +1

For similar price you could get a 3+1 MW6, in bridge mode will offer far superior performance, but with quick drop-off.
Tenda's are absolute crap when configured as a router. If you don't know what you are doing Tenda's can be difficult to get Ethernet Backhaul working.
Both vendors are not renewed for punctual Firmware updates.

Google Mesh Nest is still the go-to but not suitable where you can replace your ISP's Router, but many people can't, ie; your ISP uses vLAN tagging.
Unless they fixed it, Google Mesh Nest doesn't support Bridge with more than 1 device, so that's useless.

      • Can confirm: Tenda dropped my 50Mbps to a 2Mbps connection when configured as a router.

    • This one has "3 x gigabit ports per Halo unit". Tenda Nova has one WAN port plus one ethernet port, not sure if 10/100 or 1000.

    Looks like 3x3 MIMO.

Interesting how there's no such thing as "router" and "extender" nodes, each of them is the same hardware.

Good that they have 3 ethernet ports each.

In case you don't know, MERCUSYS is a sub brand of TP-LINK.

    • I thought it was a rip off linksys brand lol.

    • Interesting, it does look fairly similar to the lower-end TP-Link Deco range (eg M5).

  • Having gotten and used this mesh systems cheaper cousin (the S12 3 pack) for the past 4-5 months, its been fairly reliable ever since it was set up.
No drops, and great coverage. Never expected to get good reception in the garage, through brick walls and all the other junk in there.

The interface is clunky, but maybe this improved model does better. And wish I had that third ethernet port and gigabit ones at that. And couldn't set it up in AP mode*

  • Quick summary - bought one this morning (Mercusys H50G EU v1.0)

You can change the wifi name/password, and update firmware … and that's about it. The firmware is even more basic than their emulator suggests for previous models. Requires wired backhaul for the main node (no WDS/Extender function).

    • for those who have these, what's your experience?

  • I bought a set to see how it goes, I'm on HFC so I'm assuming this sits between the Arris box and the router?

    • Even for HFC it still varies, if you’re with TPG you still need their router, it required VLAN setup. But if you’re with ABB like I do, Arris box’s cable may directly connect to mesh main node’s WAN port.

  • Hi all. For those who have this mesh system. How are they performing? Is it stable reliable? Looking to get one for my home about 200m2. Thank you for sharing.
