I don't think this one has an ethernet port. I was trying to find one to plug in next to my comp so I can connect the ethernet (no wifi on PC). I am living away from home for 6months and no cables run into the office from where the modem connection comes in.
    Any ideas OP?

    • +6

Are you after an Ethernet over power solution?

      This is a smart socket.

    • +5

This isn't a powerline device - it's for wifi control of the socket. I think you're after a different device altogether

      • +4

Oh I see, yeah I have misunderstood what the device is lol

    • I think you're looking for a powerline ethernet (or ethernet over power) device

This deal is for a smart plug that you remotely control and monitor

    • I think you need a Wifi extender, most come with RJ45 port….assuming you have wifi

    • +1

aliexpress, 10$ for usb wifi dongle

    • Wouldn't it be cheaper/easier to just buy a WiFi dongle or card for your PC ?

      • Yes it would be, just thought I would get some extra wifi coverage at the same time if close enough on $

    • I know what you mean, I was looking for a rubber boot, but this is neither a boot, nor made of rubber!

  • does this work with tuya app?

    • -2

Yeah it does, I got one recently, works really well.

Use it mainly to set a timer to turn off the kmart fan on hot summer nights after about 30 minutes when I'm going to sleep so it doesn't stay on all night.

      • thanks.

      • Are you sure? TP-link have their own system which is separate from Tuya.

        • iirc the 'tp-link' app is just re-skinned tuya (same as brilliant and genio)

        • Sorry my bad, I thought I had the Tuya app but it's just the Tapo app.

      • -1

i have my kmart fan on all night every night, cant sleep without that white noise.

for anyone wondering, these look similar to the tp link KASA KP115 models but they require a different app to use them (Tapo)

Also, "Tapo only allows for remote access by App if you are connected via the same network…. while Kasa allows from remote access from anywhere by App as long as you have internet access."

Tapo is the lower tier brand of the two.

    • I don't get this.

Does that mean tapo only allows access locally by WiFi only whereas if you have the kasa version, you can be outside your home (WiFi off) and switch remotely through your phone data?

      • +9

        yep!

they started to separate into 2 tiers of brands late last year. I have a number of KP115's, and almost ordered this thinking it was the same thing but its not.

    • +3

ok yep thats a huge deal breaker! Lucky i held off. I cannot imagine why anyone would want to be limited to just within home use.

I guess at the end of the day if you actually only want scheduling/timer this is an okay way to do it too over a 'dumb' timer available for roughly same money

      • -5

Agreed! Plus the KP115 model is only $6 on Amazon atm

        • +1

          Ahh, I'm sorry, where?

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: Oops, I meant $6 more haha. Cannot edit.

            • +1

@telf22: The KP115 is $29. You might be looking at the KP105 which doesn't have power monitoring. Even then, the 105 is still $24.95 so more than $6 more.

      • If you are using Alexa or Google Home at your home you can operate these remotely via any internet connection of course.

      • Some of these devices can be re-flashed with open source firmware that gives you more control.

    • +1

I was able to power on my device with the Tapo app while away from home.

It's good you can connect also add the device to Google Home but for that you'd beed to be on the wifi network.

    • +4

Eh? I have this and use the Tapo app and can use my phone network to turn it on and off

      • +2

I can confirm this too. It works on networks outside your home Wireless LAN as well.

    • Thanks mate. I intended to buy, then I read your comment. :)

      • All good!

    • +1

For anyone curious, I'm sure this is made irrelevant if you use Home Assistant. If you can access your HA instance from anywhere, these would be identical in function.

    • You can still control these through the alexa app without being connected to the same network.

Allo, anyone looking for smart switches/light bulbs/ garage door opener systems, but built on either ESP home or Tasmota.

    I’d recommend looking at https://www.athom.tech/

I’ve purchased heaps of items from them after I got fed up with Kogan app lock software.

Highly recommend. Shipping is about 1-2 weeks depending.

    • It's using a realtek chip as opposed to an ESP-XXXX chip so even the old method of flashing using a FTDI adapter looks out of the question, so yeah, I'd be going down that path too if I wanted Tasmota / ESPHome.

    • +1

That’s actually a really good price for an au plug with Wi-Fi and energy monitoring

      https://www.athom.tech/blank-1/au-plug

Do you know if you can add them to Home Assistant?

      • Yep ESP-Home is built into HA. Tasmota is equally supported too. Few clicks and your up and running.

They also give you the source code/ yaml file on there website for you to configure more.

        • Nice. Do you use ESP Home or Tasmota?

      • +1

Looks good this one. Anyone know if this one cover up the other port in a double gang power outlet? Can I put 2 of these into the same double gang outlet?

        • they do look a bit wider than the tplinks

        • +2

Unfortunately, you cannot put two together in one single 2 gang socket plate (sad I know) I did reach out to the company about this and they gave this response.

“ I understand the size of it is little big, right now we using public mould plastic case, by this way, it will save us a lot work and both the cost of the unit. to make it small need to make our own private mould, since there are many different types of plugs for different countries, so it's a little hard for us to do it right now, we now working on changing ESP8266 to ESP32 and a better monitoring chipset. after this, we may consider to make our own mould.” - Peter Sun, CEO

          • @Jlaw: Thanks mate. That is a let down.

    • Does these works with alexa ?

  • Hey Siri?

  • Wi-Fi socket is probably the most handy smart device, no separate power needed.

It would be so lame if it needs a separate power adapter to power the Wi-Fi function. :D

  • Can this be used outside?

    • It's probably not IP (Ingress Protection) rated, not sure about the minimum requirement for outdoor use, something like this has an IP54 rating, while an industrial one like this is rated IP66.

  • Does it have a surge protector as well?

  • I just bought this and realised it wouldn’t work for my old aircon :(
Does anyone know how to make this work with a 15a plug with a adapter so something? Or a version which is?

    • You might want to try and consider the Mirabella Smart IR remote. It's sold at Kmart for $29.

  • +1

If anyone is interested, the Tuya-compatible Eko smart plug from Big W eBay can still be had for $15.15 delivered (eBay plus, code PLUSFEB5). Nice slim design with energy monitor.

I bought a few of these and didn't think they'd be as useful for me as they really are.

    I use mine for:

Controlling the home entertainment system, turn it off at night (part of my 'OK Google, Goodnight' routine) and have no parasitic draw, it turns on with my good morning routine

Monitoring my work setup for power usage (obv. not this unit), great for tax purposes when working out the real cost of WFH, surprisingly light on power.

Controlling the bore. I can now tell google to water the lawns for half an hour and not have to go unplug / replug it in

Control the garden lights so I don't have to get up to turn them off when I get to bed

Keen to hear what others use their smart sockets for!

      christmas tree timer
radio/music player timer (ever walked into the house with smooth jazz playing, so cool!)

    • +1

wow - nice! great use cases and you seen to be on top of this tech 👍

    • +1

I have an ABI with mainly memory issues. While my folks were on holiday, I chucked one on the air fryer to make sure I'd turned it off and wouldn't burn the house down after going to work.

I have a "room" called desk and just say Ok Google turn off desk to turn off the monitors and my laptop.

The lights/lamps around the house and just hard to reach power points.

    • +2

I did the sums for my gear, and the power draw of the smart plug itself was basically the same as the standby power of the devices plugged in to it. YMMV may vary depending on what gear you have, but it's definitely worth checking before you go to the hassle of setting a smart plug up just to kill standby power.

  • Can you see how much current is being drawn throught the outlet? Or is that what "power monitoring' is in other adapters?

  • No power monitoring in this unit

  • which plug is good for Motors ? Which brand shall one go for kasa, tapo etc ?
