$5 for Steam keys now? Interesting.

    • +4

This is what happens when people start abusing the system. from 1c to 1 dollar and now this
      oh well

      • +5

I was wondering what you meant by "from 1c to 1" so I tried entering $0.01…

It appears that you have no heart! Please prove that you are really human.

Orders under $1 must authenticate with reCAPTCHA to help cut down on costly abuse.

        Love it!

P.S. I still don't think we should be putting $0.01 in the title….. charity people… geez!

P.P.S Beautiful bargain submission 'Pledge'. All linky and tableafied! :)

        • It seems the bandwidth was costing them more than $0.01, correct?

        • Your statement doesn't make much sense heatseeker.

If you buy it for $0.01, you still download from them. If you buy it for $5 and get steam keys, you download from Steam's servers.

    • -1

I think $5 for steam users isn't fair. It is fair enough that people abuse the system, but it was originally 'pay what you like', so I usually give a couple of dollars despite the 0.01 cent minimum. I offer what I feel is reasonable for the games, and I do not like being forced to pay more, so I will not buy it.

        • +3

I never pay 1 cent…I think you should read it again, for there isn't anything ignorant about it. It's actually ignorant to assume ignorance when there is none to be found. ;)

        • +3

Personally I have two of the three games and the films/ost are worthless to me…

Why would you suggest I can't pay $2 to get the one game I'm missing and have a steam key for it? I like steam because it makes it easy to track which indie games I've bought.

          That's $2 they aren't going to get.

        • +6

I'm in the same boat as justtoreply. I already bought Machinarium and Samarost 2 in earlier Humble bundles, so I am only paying for Botanicula. I would love to add it to my Steam library but I can't because I don't want to pay $5 for it. I'm not sure I have got $5 worth of value out of a point and click adventure in my life (just not my genre, unfortunately). There is even less chance of me playing it for any more than a few minutes now that it will be hidden away on my harddrive. It's sort of sad.

        • +2

ditto. sucks if i want to pay a few dollars for the game i want, rather then bundle they want to sell.

opting out, as steam is the only future.

        • Same here justtoreply, I never play any of the crappy games but the humble bundles just served as a way to collect more games for a reasonable price, reasonable to me is only a few dollars as they aren't games I would play. I would also end up buying them for a few steam friends. Well looks like I'll be just waiting for steam specials on them besides the fact that then nothing goes to charity.

    • and the average price is 8.60, previous bundles averages 5 or so, so I am guessing they are willing to loss the 1 cent or 1 dollar sales and earn more per sale.

      • +1

I guess. If it was $1 minimum I think that more people would buy it, so it might even it out. I think that a lot of people will purchase it for 0.01c now, if they cannot get a steam key even if they pay $4.

        • +8

exactly - I've bought every single HB set so far - even if I wan't interested I'd throw at least $2 at em just cos I could do so without thinking and make my steam collection look bigger. Now for $5 for games I haven't heard of is a bit steep - I might as well keep that $5 for a good game on a daily Steam special (actually I'm pretty sure I have Samrost 2 and Machinerium from a previous bundle)

        • Samorost 2 was added to HB#1 as a bonus.
Samorost 2 was therefore also given to the HB#2 buyers who bought early or beat the average.

          Machinarium was in HB#2.

So I already have them, but it's still worth getting this bundle IMO.

        • +1

Exactly why I'm not buying. Having two of the three games and still the $5 minimum charge makes no sense. Personally I dont attach value to the OSTs or film.

        • +1

          Well you are missing out:
          - Botanicular is worth $5.

And for an extra $3.60ish you get 2 more games. Plus any extras - they always add extra game(s)!

        • +1

The steam key is meant to be a bonus. The games still work perfectly fine if you choose to be cheap.

    • +5

The bundle is becoming less and less "pay what you want".

  • Botanicular is worth the price of admission alone!
Already purchased Machinarium before separately, but will have a Steam key for it now :-)

    • +1. Quite happily paid $10 for this bundle. Makes up for my stingy $1 purchase last time…

Played a bit of Botanicular today, and it looks great.

  • Looove the Humble Bundle :D!!!

  • Why does the title say #7?

  • Wow, you seem to be posting a lot of sweet deals, thanks Pledge!

  • I thought there was going to be an iOS version? :(

  • +6

These bundles are coming through too quickly. They should slow down the release of them to generate more hype and excitement which equals more money.

    • +1

And so that I have enough money for the bundles.

  • Thanks OP! Definitely worth it not just for the games but for the soundtracks :D

  • +1

Well that sucks ass. Why did I bother pre-ordering Botanicula on GOG for, what, $10? When it's available on release at $5?

    I feel totally ripped off.

    • +1

You get some bonus wallpapers and stuff for your $10 pre-order :D

Bonus content included for FREE with purchase: 19 wallpapers soundtrack demo (3 tracks) 35 avatars 22 artworks 12 character cards 3 authors photo 24 design sketches

      • +2

AND the warm feeling in the bottom of your heart that the extra $ go to an indie dev.

        • +2

Actually the extra $ could easily go to GOG

With Humble Bundle you can select exactly how much the dev gets.

        • +5

I did get a warm feeling, I purchased the $8 or so humble bundle and selected all the money to go to charity. That'll teach them.

        • +3

Giving to charity. The good kind of revenge.

    • +1

According to the top contributors list, GOG has donated $300.

    • +2

May I direct those interested in the preorder mix-up to this news story:
      http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/04/20/amanita-sorry-to-…

TL;DR version: The devs are sorry they made this mistake and they are trying to make it up to the people who preordered in good faith. They'll be sending you some goodies soon.

Note the comments below the article: GoG seem to be on board with making amends as well - though it sounds like the GoG guys had no advance warning that this was going to happen. Still, it's nice to see both companies acknowledging mistakes/injustices and making an effort to put things right.

Personally I didn't preorder but I already have Machinarium (played - excellent) and Samorost (not played yet), and I'll still be buying this bundle. Cool game + charity + extra goodies (I like OSTs) is worth about $10 to me!

      • +1

I had a feeling GOG didn't know, they're generally really good guys. Thanks for the links, interesting reading.

    • This was posted on the @GogCom Twitter page an hour ago

"@aranelek if you bought Botanicula already on http://GOG.com no worries, visit GOG later today ;)"

So maybe you will get something else?

  • +4

I think the $5 steam key is a great idea, keeps the average price higher, which means most people pay a little more. This means the Bundles generate more income and the developers stay interested, leading to more great bundles. Stuff the 1c abusers, paying $5+ means everybody who matters wins.

Keep bringing out quality bundles like this. As long as the games are good, they will make money.

    • +1

The inclusion of bonus games and steam keys as an incentive for ample donations(above average) stops the abusers taking the cake and eating it too, without paying! They might get a slice or two, but certainly not the whole thing!

    • +1

I think it will keep the average price higher as you said, but I don't think they'd get as much money in the end as there are a lot of people that wouldn't buy it as the games aren't worth $5 to them and they don't get added to your steam library if you pay less. If anything they should have just made it minimum $5 for getting the DRM free versions as they'd have to cover their server costs for hosting the files, where steam has to o that for the steam versions.

  • forgive my ignorance but what is the benefit of the steam key?

this is a great deal for machinarium alone, can't wait to try out the other games

    • +1

If you have a steam account you can add these games to it.
Means you can redownload them anywhere anytime, sync saved games, access bonus steam content, in game chat etc etc

      • cheers!

        These stats made me chuckle

        Average Windows: $8.07
        Average Mac: $10.10
        Average Linux: $11.04

        • +1

          Yeah, that's hilarious. Really.

        • +9

Windows users(majority) have little money left after forking out so much for their evil OS.
Mac users all seem to be rich or money is just no obstacle for them to attaining the latest and greatest holy grail in technology or iDevice - brainwashed.
Linux users get a free OS and are mostly geeks/power users in the tech industry so they have a moral imperative to help the little indie developers who share the same struggles.

        • +6

lol mac is more evil than windows just because their store is all white doesn't mean they are socially responsible

          1. The average for windows is only so high because people aren't paying a low amount anymore because the steam keys are not given out with it, unfortunately it means the humble bundle wont actually make as much money this time.
          2. Only 2 Mac users bought the game one paid 0.01 and the other paid $20.20
          3. Linux people pay the most as they are just happy someone makes a game for them.

          :D

  • Saw this one coming when *****s abused the keys for steam sale last year.
SO $5 for Botanicula + Machinarium (which most already have) + Samarost 2 (which most don't care about)
and a current extra of $3.*0 for Windosill + Kooky (movie)

Just wanted to say that Windosill by itself is only $2.99 on steam so paying current average for the extras in this bundle is kinda meh, unless you want to be charitable.

This bundle should be advertised as 50% off Botanicular debut + random freebees.

  • +1

to all those who say $5 is a lot, the botanicula is a new release and its $10. that's a 50% saving and u also get 2 bonus games.

      • +2

No, the game is good, it's just they have always been big supporters of the Humble Bundle concept since the very first bundle.

$5 is very reasonable, expecting to get a steam copy for under $5 is greedy :P
Vent your anger on the steam key abusers, not a hard working small dev and charities.

      • Please don't forget that if you choose to, you can still play the game without pirating it for $0.01

The fact that the developers put the game on humblebundle lets anyone play the game for practically nothing.

But if you are someone with a steam account and won't pay $5 to have the game listed on your library then the problem is with you, not the developers or humblebundle.

  • I think people are missing the point.

The $1 key minimum was put in to prevent people from getting free coal by making new accounts.

    Coal no longer exists.

In my opinion it has been changed $5 to follow competition as well as the end goal of earning more money for their company and indie developers while getting customers to assume that it was to prevent abuse etc

    • +1

It is not possible to get more coal at this moment in time.

Steam will likely run achievement events again as they have done it several times before so there will still be a look to prevent people hoarding cheap keys to make lots of new accounts and score easy giveaways.

I personally think this bundle is a bit crappy, but given how much value I've got out of previous bundles I'm happy to get it anyway.

    • +1

It's not just coal, steam keys for $1 is just too little and I'm sure Steam/Valve had played its part to increase this, not just humblebundle

      • -1

Steam keys were 0.01 for a long time and were increased to $1 specifically because of coal that no longer exists.

There is still no explanation for an increase to $5 for any reason besides more money.

        • +1

Just cos it started at 0.01 doesn't mean it should stay that way, you only set yourself up to fail if you do not fix problems in your system.

They actually lose money when they process transactions of 0.01

from above: Please don't forget that if you choose to, you can still play the game without pirating it for $0.01

The fact that the developers put the game on humblebundle lets anyone play the game for practically nothing.

But if you are someone with a steam account and won't pay $5 to have the game listed on your library then the problem is with you, not the developers or humblebundle.

        • +1

I don't think anyone complained about the increase to $1

The issue is the increase from $1 to $5 for no reason, it wasn't even gradual for example an increase to $3

        • +3

What, you mean a charity wants to make money for… uh, charity? The nerve!

        • -3

          err?

Charity is only part of the payment and only if you choose to donate part of your payment to a charity.

        • +1

If I increased the minimum required for steam keys to $1, and it was still not high enough to keep people like you away, I would increase it to $5.

If you aren't happy to pay $5, just pay $1 and play your games and stop talking like it's your right to have the game listed on steam.

        • -2

or I'm just not going to buy it at all.

        • +2

          @ celentt

I do see your point, however, I do not think it is fair to place a $5 minimum for steam users only. The minimum should be $5 across the board. I can sympathise with samfisher in that the implementation was increased to $1 because of the coal/trading issue, and that certainly should not have increased to a $5 minimum.

And don't get me wrong, I am all for supporting charity, and I do agree that 0.01c steam keys are unfair especially for people who resell/trade.

But regardless of this, many people that have steam will refuse to pay the $5 premium and will opt for the 0.01c option, which I think will reflect in profit.

Humble Bundle was previously 'pay what you want', not 'pay what you want only if you do not want the luxury of having your games on steam'.

        • +1

If I'm not mistaken, the first humble bundle did not start off with steam keys, steam keys were added much later. So I would say "Pay what you want" did not include steam in the first place. Steam is extra, and I was freakin happy when they announced that they would give out steam keys.

-Give a big thanks and F* to all the people who abused the 0.01 system, and later spammed them on sites like Reddit
-Pretty sure Steam has something to do with this minimum price of $5, I don't see it as a good thing for both developers and steam if HumbleBundle went on and gave out 5 games for only $1 on steam. This caused me to not want to buy Shank 2, Trine 2 and many other indie games even if they were $5 on steam.

Just be happy that you can actually play the games under $5, unlike the other bundles that enforce a minimum and stop there.

  • +1

    Machinarium? SOLD!

    • +1

Yep, I bought in because of Machinarium, which I've heard is very good. Certainly the visuals are very impressive.

Botanicula looks good too, although I have to install Adobe Air on my Linux system to play it. Blegh!

      • +1

        Machinarium is indeed quite good.

  • Great stuff! Thanks OP.

  • Whats a steam key for? I paid $5 .

    • Just needed to scroll up a few inches

      OR http://lmgtfy.com/?q=steam&l=1

      • oh crap thanks.. well i look like an idiot now..

        • -1

If you don't use / need steam key can I have it?

        • Nice, celentt. You have been the "$5 Steam key" advocate all day and now you are looking for a free one. Good on you.

        • +2

I'm not looking for one, but if there's one I wouldn't let it go to waste, this is Ozbargain after all

        • Whatever, man. Don't really care. Obviously "can I have it" has a different meaning to me.

  • +2

Bought! Good one! For people whining about the price, or banging on about the "I wanna pay one cent!" principle, don't forget the humble bundles do have an element of charity. Pay a decent price, and feel good that you are giving money to charity as well as getting some fun games.

  • +2

Just bough the pack for $8.75, which gives you the extra stuff. Considering just one of the games by itself is $10 on steam, this is great :)

    • +1

As a follow up, Machinarium is a great game! played fr 3 hours last night and it felt like 30 mins!

  • I can't believe there are some people that actually pay less than $5. That is just disgusting.

  • Update:

    Bonus pack now included!

We've added a bonus pack for all customers including behind-the-scenes material for Botanicula and Kooky, the experimental interactive music project Osada, and more!
