I tried but they refused so mileage may vary for different JB.

Still don't see the point of a PS5 just yet.
I'm personally holding out for a PS5 limited disc edition console but there is still a ton of PS4 games being released in the meanwhile. It's kinda crazy.
I recall the PS3 releases significantly dying down a year after the PS4 was released.
i think its because of the chip shortage that Sony is forced to extend the PS4 life
You'd think they'd just plant some more potatoes or something to get more chips.
That and the consumer base already has a PS4 so it's still easier for developers to sell them a game on a console most people still own.

I bought one last year from BigW but sold it (at cost) unopened. It was an impulse buy and was just happy to be able to get one.

Last year I missed the online availability, called a local store and they took the pre-order.Even better, someone didn't pick up their console, so instead of waiting months, it was about 2 weeks before I got my PS5
I called my local EB last week and was told they aren't doing waitlists at the moment, as national policy. Also tried getting on the list at JB HiFi, same thing.
I paid the $200 deposit to EB. However, does any one know when i go to collect the PS5, can i ask them to refund the deposit so i can use my gift cards to pay for it ?
Yes I did this in the previous run without any issues.
Also, not sure if you're willing to do this when you pick it up, if your firmware is 4.03 or lower I wouldn't upgrade and just leave it aside.
There's a potential jailbreak for that in the distant future, but obviously no guarantees.
It has been done, just not released publicly. It was patched by Sony on firmware 4.50
The Playstation 4 recentish firmware 9.00 was jailbroken in a similar manner, which was released publicly, I've done it recently and it works fantastic.

When I picked up my Xbox I did just this.
I felt a little guilty paying with 15 gift cards ($50 denominations), but the guy told me about the time a kid's friends thought it would be funny to get him gift cards to buy a Switch for his birthday, and bought them in $1 amounts (450 gift cards). (Apparently they aren't meant to be sold in these amounts).
Just go at a time that it isn't really busy, and be considerate if there's a queue, and you'll be fine.

Its 2022 already and we still don't see a discount on a console released in 2020. If this keeps going on, then it'll be a problem with pricing when PS5 Pro arrives.
I'd hazard a guess that they'll just hold off releasing a Pro model until they need it… and if any console needs a "Pro" model, it's Switch. I'm really hoping a Switch pro will make some of the poorer performing games cough GTA Trilogy remastered cough become a much better experience.

Marketing push for 8K TVs. Also, smaller more powerful chips means higher yields which alleviates supply issues too.
Tech doesn't stop progressing just because of chip shortages. GPUs have shown that.

Companies drop the price (or more usually bundle in a few games or an extra controller) to get people to buy consoles. There is no need to do so since they are selling out their stock continuously.

I have a PS5 and Xbox Series X… I've always had the Playstation since ps1 and had every Xbox except the One… honestly my recommendations to my normie friends and friends with kids at the moment is to buy a Series X.
My recommendations is buy both if you can (unless you already have a powerful gaming PC). Otherwise, it depends on whether you want to play Sony PS5 exclusives.
A lot of people in the gaming industry predict those two might be the final gen of consoles, with cloud gaming taking over eventually. Also, mobile gaming is a bigger market than console gaming. Apple is getting more profits from games (with that 30% cut) than Microsoft + Sony combined (in terms of profits from gaming).

Bought a PS5 at launch for $1200 on Ebay and recently sold It for $950….I don't get the hype and was very unimpressed with the performance of the console myself…currently enjoying my beefy PC rig
The main issue is a lot of the first party exclusives have been delayed and we are technically still in the cross gen phase. We are mostly just seeing quality of life improvement for PS5 so far (for supported games, they do load fast), but Series S|X's Quick Resume is pretty impressive. Also, this gen of consoles are quiet (in terms of fan noise).
Consoles sold like hot cakes so far due to Covid. Yes, beefy PC rig is great, but what exactly can you get for $750 now? PS5 does benefit from backward compatibility (to PS4/PS4 Pro). One really annoying thing with PC is UHD Blu-ray playback. There are so many roadblocks just to play it (it's a pain on Intel platform (except the latest gen, since Intel has given up on supporting it - coz. PC users don't seem to care), it is impossible on AMD platform), and rip off prices for UHD-ROM drives for PC. It is much easier to rip a UHD blu-ray (get a $70 BD-ROM that can read UHD blu-ray disc data) on a PC.
One other mess with PC is HDR support (if you switched it on for desktop, it is a bit !@#!@#). I think Microsoft should copy Apple on that. PC monitor companies should also provide multiple monitor profiles.
Yep literally every AAA heavy hitter exclusive on PS5 is a cross-gen game and I get the feeling they've been gimped so Sony can sell more across both generation's…very disappointing and it's only going to get worse unless Sony change this stance and release on PC day 1 or a streaming service that can deliver PS5 quality……PS5 is still doing 30fps in quality mode,I mean c'mon

That's to be expected though, the PS5 performs like a mid-end PC at best. What annoys me more is there's more and more games with unoptimised engines that can only run at 60fps at 1080p on the PS5 — e.g. Dying Light 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy. I can't stand the blurriness of 1080p, so I'm stuck with 30fps for now.
I wish they could at least do 1440p/60fps, that would be very usable.
@deadpoet: Yeah Returnal was native 1080p then they used temporal upsampling to get 1440p and further still checkerboard upscaling to hit 4k..
There's no substitute for native resolutions and native1440p on a 1440p monitor looks better than fake 4k on a native 4k TV….
All these tricks fall away too when there's movement on screen

I gave up usbc charging in my center console so these can get chips and they are still in shortageI didn't get a call or email so called the store and they said it is ready to pick up but I only have 2 days. I thought I would receive a call or email.
Also want to ask, how strict are they with the strictly 1 per customer. I am just asking as I have bought one for a friend and I have bought one for myself in the past. Would they decline me after telling me to go pick it up?
