Yesterday's listing (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/683315) of the 2TB stick is still the same price.
However, the 1TB has been reduced from $249 yesterday to $234.61 today.

I know it's not a huge deal for my first post - but have to start somewhere I guess….

Mod Update 15/03: Price has dropped to $229.30

    WD black 850 1tb for $230: https://www.amazon.com.au/WD_Black-Internal-Gaming-Technolog…
Also samsung 980 pro with heatsink not a bad price @ $262: https://www.amazon.com.au/Samsung-980-Pro-1TB-Heatsink/dp/B0…

    • Do NVMe's need a heatsink? Do they generate enough heat themselves to warrant it?

      • +2

If you have a PC with lots of fans and a low/mid range GPU that doesn't procedure heaps of heat no.
If your PC is an oven and your looking at a 7000MBPS nvme drive.. They get hot but most motherboards come with nvme heat spreaders included.

Lifespan maybe reduced and performance could be impacted.(like with any PC part that gets too hot)

For me, more relevant for PS5 use. I just bought the WD black this morning, after comparing against Samsung 980 pro. For Playstation 5 use, apparently firmware for 980 pro needs to be updated from a PC to get updated write speeds - while WD 850 black is quick out of the box.

        • How did you go with the comparison?

          • +1

@alo1234: I just got the WD 850 black as it's slightly faster write speeds, faster write out of the box without requiring update of firmware, and it was $4 cheaper :)

            • @onlinepred: For PS5? The wd is $50 more for the heat sink 1TB version?

              • @kojihama: I got a $30 heat sink and the non heat sink version wd. All up was $260. Although I used my 10% vouchers.

        • yep all gen 4 drives are pretty much compatiable with the ps5 I have the 2tb version of this. works great.

      • Typically performance motherboards come with integrated heatsinks for each m.2 slot that's expected to house an SSD.

While the NAND chips can sometimes get a little hot, the controller tends to be the real problem part. But as with most modern consumer electronics, it has built in thermal protection. Perhaps lifespan will be reduced but for most users, probably not in a significant way. So the only issue is it may throttle, especially with continuous writes or reads over a span of time so you may get lower performance

  • For real life usage do you really feel that much difference between Pro and non Pro?

    • if the price gap is small may as well get the best.

    • Depends what you mean by real life usage. If you regularly transfer multiple 10GB+ files (between two 7000mbps drives), or access large amounts of data in programs, then you might notice a difference. For boot times, games, etc. you probably won't notice it very much.

      • yep the ps5 the load times are instant, and transfering games from built in to the m.2 drive is extremely fast. and most of those games are 50 to 100gb and there copied in minutes. some games will copy in seconds.

        • That isn't really a difference between Pro and non Pro though. However the PS5 requires gen 4, so it's a moot point if you're talking about the PS5

          • @Nil Einne: depends what you do if you do video editing is a night and day difference. in some games like Rust its a night and day difference on loading times

  • Laptop worthy?

Heard these fit in the Lenovo yoga slim carbons
