Innovative Men's Wallets

So I've been on a bit of an EDC journey recently and come across a lot of innovative wallets, sadly which most aren't available in Australia - got to import them in.

The Ridge, Aviator, Dango, Akeeni and Trayvax come to mind, anyone else has had one of these?

I don't think this is very innovative. These things came out years ago and Apple just put their name to the idea (as usual).

Apple just put their name to the idea (as usual).

Please elaborate which products out there have a MagSafe functionality as well as supporting a "FindMy" feature?

        • +11

We're talking about 'wallet' functionality here.

Good old fashion double-sided tape works wonders and then it wouldn't need the "FindMy" feature because, if it's actually stuck to the phone properly, you can locate the phone and the wallet will be there too.

            • +38

              @ThithLord:

…what the absolute shmuck is your point?

              Let me be blunt here.

              1. That "back of the phone" wallet/cardholder design came out many years ago. It had double-sided tape on the back so that it could be stuck securely to the back of any phone.

              2. Apple decided to steal that design and put a magnet on the back on of it so that it attached to the back of the iPhone magnetically, instead of using the double-sided tape.

              3. Because it's attached by a magnet and can fall off, Apple has added this "FindMy" feature on it.

In other words, Apple have created a "problem" by using magnets (instead of double-sided tape that is quite secure) and then they also created a "solution" by adding the FindMy function to it.

How smart of them! And then we have idiots that believe their marketing hype!

                • +17

@Diji1: How does creating a problem with a perfectly fine product, then appearing to fix it at the same time constitute an "improvement".
This so called "improved" product also now only works on iphones and is no longer universally useable like the original ones.

                • @ThithLord:

Apple designed stole a product and put their name to it

                  Fixed it for you!

                • +3

@ThithLord: I think you've missed the point. He simply said that the wallet attached to the phone is not innovative which is what this entire post is about.

                  • @Caped Baldy: Where did Apple say it’s innovative?

                    • +1

@Flying Ace: Very first comment about this post on innovative men's wallets is to an apple product…

                  • +1

@Caped Baldy: Are any of the wallets OP mentioned really innovative, or are they nothing more than glorified money clips?

                    • +1

@smartazz104: I wouldn't call any of them innovative just different. Hardly been a dramatic shift over to them.

Wallets as a whole aren't products where innovations really happen. Just clever design choices.

                  • @Caped Baldy: Okay that's fair

                • +2

                  @ThithLord:

Apple haters are so salty, it's kinda cute.

Mate I love Apples stuff and even I'm downvoting you on this one…

              • +2

@bobbified: Hey, you need to calm down, its a great idea having a wallet that sticks to your phone, whether its by tape or magnets, that way when you lose it somewhere at the pub and some one finds it, they get to steal all your money and your phone before dumping the wallet in the toilets.

              • +3

@bobbified: What idiots were sticking wallets to the backs of their phones with double sided tape…

                • +1

@smartazz104: Maybe the glue is Selleys Liquid Nails. Never going to come off.

        • +1

That's just slapping together their existing products.

Bifold phone cases existed previously. As did tile trackers. It's not innovative to glue those together.

        • Please elaborate which products out there have a MagSafe functionality as well as supporting a "FindMy" feature?

That's very specific, but the "wallet"/pouch on the back of the phone isn't new. There's been cases like that and I know companies even had freebies where they gave out 'wallets' where it has a 3M sticker on the back which you attach to the phone/case.

          • @KBZ: Innovating a wallet into seems pretty big brain to me but Righto

            • -1

@ThithLord: Let me ask, why are people carrying wallets at all these days? All your bank cards can be in your phone, your licence and Medicare is digital. What else could you be carrying that you need a "innovative wallet" attached anywhere ffs?

              • -1

@alikazi: Are you upset people do things differently to you?

                Ffs grow up.

                • -1

@quog: Are YOU upset people don't do things like you do? Ffs grow up.

  • check amazon, its free US prime postage (no mins ) until mid March

    • -2

Really? When did it smart? Didn't see any post about it either.

  • +12

what the hell is a "innovative wallet"

cheap wallet is good as you still have enough $ to put in it

  • +36

I have a magic wallet. The day after payday I never have any money.

  • +13

Haven’t carried a wallet for years

  • +3

These look uncomfortable to have in pocket?

  • +10

    Have you looked at Bellroy?

    • +1

Yep.. I recommend the Note Sleeve (although from what I’ve read, the quality has dropped lately). But my Note Sleeve from 2019 is still going strong

      • My slim sleeve is also holding up well after 3 years. Highly recommended. Just got my brother the coin wallet and hopefully the quality holds up

  • +8

Not sure if this is the style you are after, but its super cool and innovative. Designed in Melb, stocked in Melb.
I bought one after seeing it flogged during a weather segment on Sunrise and i love it! As do 80% of cashiers who comment on it.

      Ooh interesting

    • This looks perfect for the bus. Only reason I still need to occasionally carry a wallet. Though if they implement cc tag on then all I would need is my phone..

    • +6

Over $100 and holds three cards? Nice concept, but impractical and expensive.

      • how many cards are you actively using?

        • Actively, 9 (personal, work and organisation CCs, government IDs, RFID entry cards). Once you get to that stage, the 4 occasionally used cards make little difference and you might as well carry them anyway.

They're all held in a card clip. All up, it's card sized and about 2cm thick, so still pretty small.

  • +1

I have a ridge copy bought from Amazon, can't see myself going back to a conventional wallet.
I got a carbon fibre one and added a tile slim because I am hopeless at finding things.

  • +17

What’s even more innovative is not carrying a wallet at all. Have it all on your phone.

    • +4

Just need apple wallet to support drivers license and then this will be perfect

      • +5

Not sure what state you're from, but you access your digital driver licence in NSW via the Service NSW app, not via Apple Wallet or GPay

        • +13

Not sure what state you're from

QLD , we'll probably be the last to get digital anything.

          • -2
          • +3

@Jimothy Wongingtons: Apparently Qld accept digital licences from other states as the legal equivalent to physical ones, and they are working on an app that Queenslander can use to get a digital licence, wait and see i guess

          • +2

@Jimothy Wongingtons: ACT doesn't have digital license either - it's literally the only reason why I still have a wallet.

      • Unless you need it for proof of age why carry it?
If you get pulled over you have 24hrs to produce it.
The police can look you up using your rego anyway.

        • +7

you get pulled over you have 24hrs to produce it.

Rather just get sorted on the spot without a special trip to the cop shop, plus I still get carded at the grog shops

          • @Jimothy Wongingtons: I don't get carded. So I just don't bother. The annoyance of carrying a wallet everywhere is worse for me than producing a license once every 5 years or so which is pretty much the frequency I get pulled over

            • +1

@giftcardinspector: I would feel weird if I didn’t have my wallet on me even though I have an EDC bag now, can’t leave the house without a three tap.

          • +1

            @Jimothy Wongingtons:

Rather just get sorted on the spot without a special trip to the cop shop

Exactly, lol why the hell would anyone want this annoyance.

        • +1

If you get pulled over you have 24hrs to produce it.

Not the case in all states. Also the police can't look you up using the rego if you're not the registered owner e.g. driving a family member's car

          • +1

@kerfuffle: Good point I drive a company car too

          • @kerfuffle: It's the case in Qld. I just don't see the point in carrying a wallet everywhere just for the off chance I'd get pulled over. I have a photo of my licensed on my phone I can produce. But I havent been pulled over in years

    • +9

Some of us print our crypto out, 'cause we like the feel of folding stuff. Bonus, print on parchment for that exclusive quality feel.

      • -7

        Do you 🖨️?

Digital 👛 is the way to go.

      • +1

        Print out your NFTs too

        • -3

          🖨️ a line of text?

        • It won't be the nft anymore

    • Yes I was much happier once I got rid of my wallet and put everything on my phone. But then I thought 'why carry my phone around in my pocket like a luddite?'. So now I keep my phone up my arse along with my head.

      • -1

        Some back door, ja.

  • +6

    My phone is my wallet.

  • +1

I'm just waiting for the NSW proof of age card to be added to ServiceNSW app and I'm getting rid of my wallet.

    • Hopefully soon; hasn't it been on trial for the past six months or so now in selected postcodes?

      • Yes I think it's been on trial in the Blue Mountains for a long time!

  • +1

I moved everything into my phone. I keep a small, slimline wallet with 6 pockets in the car with stuff I can’t move to my phone (basically Medicare card, work ID card, my daughters Timezone card and two membership cards for local clubs.)

    • +1

      Medicare can be moved?

      • it can be linked to servicensw but im not sure if you can use it at the doctor, they usually record it anyways

        • You can.

Source: I have done it multiple times in the past 3 years.

    • Medicare app or a photo of it. Lots of local clubs are releasing apps.

    • Medicare can be moved, even a literal photo of your Medicare card is fine.

      • I've used less than that. Just the number, my position on the card and the expiry date (from a text my son sent me when I realised I didn't have the card).

  • I do like Bellroy wallets though I have been leaving my wallet in a messenger bag since I've got NFC on the phone

  • +2

I have a Bellroy Flip that is stylish and slim - it's also starting to patina.

I've also just ordered https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1039166851/puncube-slim… - because I love the concept of a slim wallet also holding a minimal set of keys. Particularly if we start getting cars that support NFC unlock (so you dont need bulky AF car keys)

    • second for bellroy. I've got a bellroy apex slim sleeve and its the bees knees.

    • It seems it's their second KS campaign, did you try their last campaign product? The phone stand function looks interesting also.

    • Hey, I was wondering how's the puncube wallet going? Was looking around and saw this wallet which has an interesting concept.

  • +7

Are they really minimalist wallets or just over-engineered card holders?

  • You shouldn't pay too much for a wallet unless you're using it as a fashion statement. Having said that, I have this wallet. Holds 20+ cards + cash + receipts. New meaning to minimalism.
    https://www.all-ett.com/collections/leather-wallets/products…

    • +4

      lol 20 cards isnt minimalist

      • You don't have to keep 20 cards. You can keep just 4 and call it minimalist. It doesn't look bulky anyway.

      • +1

That's why he said 'new' meaning to minimalism. Minimalism is now whatever one wants to define it apparently. 20 cards? MINIMALIST!

    • +1

Tried but couldn't even paywave with it…

Also money I put in their a couple of months ago is worth less than it is today ;)

      • Also money I put in their a couple of months ago is worth less than it is today ;)

Sounds like the wallet of many married men too

  • Uh… you need a wallet?

I haven’t carried one in probably a year

    • driving license on phone (NSW)
    • Apple Pay for cash
    • Medicare card on phone
    • house access is a number pad
    • public transport I use Apple Pay
    • +7

Same — I hardly need to carry a wallet anymore. BUT I still carry my physical drivers license when I drive even though I have it on my phone, as I'm not comfortable handing over my unlocked phone in a traffic stop situation.
