    Not that good?

    • +2

For a non-stop flight (and therefore no long transit times or having to worry about possible PCR test restrictions in another transit country) - yes!

      • arent most (all?) flights to LA non-stop? Only time I ever saw one that wasnt was a cheap deal going through wellington 10+ years ago

        • +1

I've been on flights to the USA that had a stop-over in either Auckland, or Nadi, or Hawaii, or Tahiti.

  • -2

Not that much availability at those prices during peak / school holidays OP

    • +8

Usually the case unfortunately with all flight deals. However if you are flexible and ok with kids missing a few days of school, there is availability just before school holidays start

  • Is it worth booking via agent vs a ticket from the airline? I’ve always booked via airlines directly, so was wondering how much difference would be going via agent.

    • +5

Usually OTA are cheaper than booking directly with Airlines. However in some instances it is easier to deal with an airline directly especially for airline imposed flight changes etc. However both options will charge additional fees should the passengers want to change dates/flights etc. Hope that sums it up and I am sure others will add their own views!

      • +1

        Thanks !!

      • +1

I appreciate you have a business to run but I've never seen a OTA that doesn't impose it's own fees on top of any airline imposed fees when making changes.

So while you say "both options will charge additional fees" it's not a fair comparison. It should say an OTA will charge extra fees in addition to any airline imposed fees in the case of changes.

        • Understand. Really depends on the airline. For example Qantas charges $80 processing fee (pre-covid)

However do what's comfortable for you. Fortunately you have choices!

          • -2

@flightfinderau: I've made multiple changes with Qantas, including even missing my flight (MEL-LAX) due to Covid test result delays and they have never charged me a fee.

It is extremely poor (and biased) advice to recommend third party booking sites in covid times. All purchasers will get from them is terrible service and extra fees while FlightFinderAU gets a nice commission/affiliate payment.

Everyone should be booking direct unless they want a terrible experience.

EDIT: Negging this deal as booking using an OTA during covid is going to incur extra costs and difficulties making changes and OP has a financial interest in referring sales to them rather than airline direct bookings.

            • +6

@stirlo: Sorry. I am not forcing you to book, nor I am influencing you to book with a OTA. It's really upto you. Hence why I said, do what's comfortable for you

              • +4

@flightfinderau: Right but you totally misrepresented the costs of change fees with OTAs. There is not a single OTA that would not pass on a airline fee to a customer and every one I've ever seen also charges their own fees on top.

So saying both options charge fees (when you just admitted Qantas doesn't since covid) is incorrect. The change fees on a direct booking will ALWAYS be cheaper and for this Qantas deal are currently $0.

MyTrip.com used in this deal charges $106 USD in fees in addition to any airline fees You also open yourself up to experiences like this

                • -1

@stirlo: I have said my two cents worth and repeatedly said to do your own research and choose what option is best for you. You are entitled to disagree. Have a nice day

            • -2

@stirlo: It's also extremely poor (and biased) advice to suggest that if you make multiple changes or miss your flight that Qantas won't charge you any fees. Sure, they might waive a fee occasionally but it is certainly not their standard practice.

              • +3

                @donga100: https://www.qantas.com/au/en/coronavirus/fly-flexible.html

There are currently no change fees on Qantas bookings and haven't been for nearly 2 years.

                • -2

@stirlo: I would rather pay a travel agent to look after this for me , if you have a good one they wont charge to help you when things are out of your control . Bet you have spent a long time on the phone/online fixing your QF issues .

                  • +2

@deb3103: Perhaps, but low cost online booking websites like MyTrip are always going to add extra fees and never going to provide better service than booking direct.

                    • @stirlo: I mean an actual travel agent , a person , not an OTA which is a system not a professional person who has training !
How many hours have you spent doing all this "free" stuff for yourself is the question . I know wait times are horrendous
to call QF if you cant amend online … Say you have spent 6 hrs x and your hourly wage at your normal job is $40 = $240 .
How you spend your time is you own but its not "free" to do it yourself .

                      • +1

@deb3103: Yeah for some people this is certainly the case. Particularly when you just want to have a relaxed holiday and have someone take care of it. For me I enjoy the rush of bargain hunting and researching everything there is to do at a destination so the cost of my time isn’t as important.

But for both of us we agree that booking through discount online travel agents is a bad idea which is what FlightFinderAu and the links to the flights he’s posted lead you to. With OTAs if anything goes wrong you’re in a terrible position and up for even more fees than normal. In COVID times I’m arguing they’re not worth the “saving” when things are so likely to need changing.

                • -1

                  @stirlo:

There are currently no change fees on Qantas bookings and haven't been for nearly 2 years.

Some pretty notable asterisk with that:

                  • +1

@donga100: All of which will be passed on to you by the cheap online travel agents. Plus they’ll add their own additional fees on top!

In my experience I’ve had no fees charged for contacting Qantas over the phone when flight changes/border restrictions/new quarantine rules have required a flight change. Of course if you just call up and change flight “because” they might charge a fee but that’s not what’s generally been happening during covid.

  • Any date for 2023

    • Unfortunately I can't look that far ahead. But you have time on your hands, so just wait. There will be more deals for certain

  • +1

Apologies for the noob questions, when I selected the link it took me to mytrip.com.
    Is mytrip.com trustworthy?
Have only ever booked direct with airlines, I am just concern that so many possibilities of future changes due to Covid that I would need to deal with mytrip.com rather than Qantas. Would that be correct?
    Thanks so much.

    • +4

I wouldn't use mytrip. Took me 18 months to get a refund and the company is a pain to deal with.

    • No different to any OTA. I have booked with them before and had no issues. However do your research!

  • Tempting!

  • Dumb question is that is it possible I want to upgrade to business using qanats point after I purchase the ticket ?

    • +2

You can't buy the cheapest fare class and upgrade the ticket. The cheapest tickets have more restrictions e.g non refundable, unable to upgrade etc. They may have changed the rules but go exploring on the Qantas page. It will be there, but will take a bit to find. If there are any travel agents here they could advise. Additionally when upgrading it is easier to have booked directly with the airline on my experience

      • +2

Well said. Exactly what I was going to say. Thanks!
I would book with Qantas directly and pay for a higher booking class ticket and then depending on availability, you should be able to upgrade.

    • +2

This depends on the class of ticket you book (usually these are denoted by a letter like Y, X, Q). Some are upgradeable while others aren't. Once you know the letter you can contact the airline and ask if it's upgradeable to business using points. What I find it's usually points+$$$ rather than points alone. Also within 10 or 14 days of travel upgrades become available via the airline website if you look at your booking (varies by website but it's usually called eUpgrade or bid for Upgrade).

If you want to really get into this in detail have a squiz at websites like australianfrequentflyer.com.au and their forums.

  • Need November dates

    • No deals for those dates. However wait for a few weeks/month or two. If I find it, I will post it (subscribe to the website so you don't miss out -shameless plug!)

  • +2

    Cheaper than going to Perth:)

  • make sure you visit skid row for its amazing sight seeing

    • -1

Why is visiting my toilet an amazing site?

  • +1

Look at the online reviews before booking with any third party agent. I booked with gotogate once, knew it would be worse than the airline but was a bit cheaper at the time.

The airline cancelled the flight, and I had a nightmarish experience trying to get a refund. Still haven't got it almost 4 months later.

Absolute leeches, drawing customers away from the airlines with marginally lower prices, but making it all back and some by charging a fee to do anything at all, and withholding refunds.

  • +4

Not going to neg because I know times have changed with COVID and inflation, but 5 years ago I paid ~$750 to fly SYD - LA and then Vegas - LA - SYD. Crazy times.

    • -3

      That seems ridiculous.

I've flown Syd to LA return quite often, always direct either with Qantas, United or AA.

      2014 - 1.7k
      Feb 2016 - 1.3k
      Dec 2016 - 999

      I don't believe your $750.

    • hopefully now with borders opening fully, more capacity is brought online which should help drive the prices back down a bit. don't think we will quite see the same deals on offer just before Covid hit but maybe around $1k for direct flights?

      • I think it will happen in time as demand as you said number of flights picks up. As to how long before this happens, is really just a guessing game.

  • What's the covid and CornTeen protocols for entering 'Merica?
