I was looking for items from Amazon UK to pad my order to get free shipping with the Persona 5 Royal deal posted earlier today, and found this by chance. Lowest price since 21 June 2021, where it was AU$26.19 from Amazon US.

Personally, I'll be using one for the car as a budget theft countermeasure (yes, I'm aware they're not as effective as active GPS trackers where you have to pay a yearly subscription), and another for my laptop bag. Do be warned, however, that if the car thief also has a Samsung phone, they will be notified that they are being tracked, as an in-built anti-stalking countermeasure.

These take replaceable CR2032 batteries, which are currently on sale at Supercheap Auto, two bucks for a 10-pack.

Buy this and AirTag. Use it to stalk someone. What are the chances they carry both phones?

    • -2

      That's a bit stalkerish don't you think

      • +2

I meant that as a hypothetical situation obviously.

    • lol ..

    • +4

      Only Samsung —> Probability of stalking notification = 1/2 = 50%

      Only Airtag —> Probability of stalking notification = 1/2 = 50%

      Both —> Probability of stalking notification = 1/2+1/2 = 100%

      • +1

        Can MathNerd verify this?

        • +1

          57% apple
          26% Samsung
          Probability of stalking notification: 83%
          lol

          • +1

@KGame: 57% for Apple is too high (most phones are not advanced). Probability of iPhone users knowing when to turn on BT 20%* ~50% = 10% probability +
            … Android users with Apple app 10% * ~50% * 20% (BT on) = 1%
Total 11% or so ==> AirTags are convenient stalking tool. Expect swappable tracking you.

Tile has been 10yrs around so more users, but don't worry. Apple (& CIA) know everything about you :(

      • +4

        Both —> Probability of stalking notification = 1/2+1/2 = 100%

Both —-> Probability of them checking for a second tracking device after finding the first = 0%

        • Grab a "Tile" as well… then you have 3 trackers going… (tile I belive works on both Android and iOS but not as many might have the apps installed)

  • +3

Too bad it is not plus version

    • What's the differences

      • +4

Galaxy SmartTag only uses Bluetooth Low Energy (will give you geo-coordinates of the item, but that's it), while Galaxy SmartTag Plus uses both Bluetooth Low Energy and ultra-wideband (UWB), which also allows you to precisely pinpoint the exact location of the item using your phone's rear camera via an AR-based interface, which makes it useful for looking for small items like keys.

Galaxy SmartTag Plus seems to be around the $70 mark everywhere, and I don't think there have been significant price drops or deals for it yet, unfortunately.

      • +1

And hardly any Samsung phones/tablets have UWB, S21 and S22 dont it's only in the Plus and Ultra Models before you rush out and waste money on a SmartTag or a new phone.

    • Keep an eye out on Amazon. I picked up the Plus version delivered from Amazon US for about $48

  • +1

Is the 'out of range' any good on Samsung they have it disabled by default and Apple have it enabled as default?

I feel like only Smart tag users would turn it on

  • +2

Anyone put one of these on their dog/cat?

    • +8

I did but he kept getting notified that I was stalking him.

I was looking for items from Amazon UK to pad my order to get free shipping

Free international delivery with prime. Prime is $6.99/month. Why would you buy an item worth $31.89 if your goal is free delivery?

    • If I got Prime, then you wouldn't have found out about this SmartTag deal, right? ;)

Jokes aside, I don't purchase from Amazon frequently enough to justify getting Prime, I feel. Plus, I've been hoping for a price drop for the SmartTag for quite a while anyway, so it all worked out in the end.

I bought two smart tag plus. One for keys and one to put in my bike frame. I can still pick up my bike about 30 metres away so i'm happy with it.

    • how expensive is your bike

      • Maybe they just live in the kind of neighbourhood that'll steal anything not nailed down lol

      • $4k Focus Planet2. Some thief had a crack at hacksawing through a cheaper Abus, but failed. So now has an Abus 6500 and of these tags. Hopefully will never need to try and track it.

    • Where is the best place to get the plus? Its so hard to find.

      • I bought on Amazon or $43 each from America in November. Unfortunately looks like they have gone up in price now.

    • +1

Where do you place it on the bike? It's pretty big compared to the Air Tag.

      • I take out the battery and put it just above it cable tied to the wires.

  • +1

Are these any good in Australia? I'm a bit conscious they aren't sold here in physical shops. Is the ecosystem of samsung smart things users big enough vs say tile users?

    • Tile is basically 0 in Australia and while Samsung wouldn't be, and will expand eventually, my understanding is that Samsung is opt in, rather then opt out like Apple, so its basically useless.

      • +1

I've got some tiles and there are actually a fair number around. The app tells you how many are around your location.

      • Yeah, that's what I'm concerned about. Can't even buy the tags in Australia through brick and mortar stores.

    • "AirTags don’t work with Android phones, but Tile’s trackers, including the Tile Mate (2022), Tile Slim (2022), & Tile Sticker (2022) (available in bundle) are the best alternative. Tile has become synonymous with trackers the same way Kleenex is with facial tissue. Its trackers offer the second-largest crowd-finding network, as well as impressive range. You can also use Tile to remotely trigger lost phone to ring, something you can’t do with AirTags."

      • +1

I'm pretty happy with my Tiles, the network of phones with the Tile app in use is adequate. I actually posted one in the mail as a curiosity to see where it would end up, it got eaten by the sorting machine and is now sitting at the AusPost Alexandria Business Hub somewhere.

  • Can anyone give a brief example of the differences for an S21 Ultra user on the 3 trackers? Hoping to leave a couple in the car and motorbike.

I heard the Apple Airtags won't work on Android, only as much as to scan someone else's lost tag. But I heard that you can log in and check it whenever you need to. Not sure of how the notifications can be set up though.

Apart from that, I haven't seen much of this SmartTag or the other 'Tile' option. Also, not sure if these two items hold up against the features of the Airtag.

Any information/advice would be great, TIA. <3

    • I wonder if the metal frame would cut the range for these.

  • I am thinking about having it my car, just in case I forgot where I park it in the mall.. will it work for that?

    • Yes, but doesn’t your phone know anyway?

  • +2

    "Tile Mate (2022)
The best Bluetooth tracker for Android users
The Tile Mate has long range, is quite loud, & gives you better chance of finding your lost stuff"
