[QLD] Free Travel on all South-East QLD Toll Roads (e.g Clem7 Tunnel, Legacy Way Tunnel, Airport Link Tunnel, Go Between Bridge)

1500

This morning I’ve (the Lord Mayor) made the decision that Council will cover motorists’ costs on Council-controlled Brisbane toll roads.

This includes the Clem 7, Legacy Way, and the Go Between bridge.
This will continue until at least Sunday.

I have made this decision due to serious and ongoing issues with the Inner City Bypass and Milton Road caused by the floods.
This will not resolve congestion and we encourage people to avoid unnecessary travel through this area.

UPDATE: I’ve just heard from the State Government that Airport Link will also be free for motorists.

Update: Queensland Premier announced all toll roads in South-East Queensland are now free.

Travel on all toll roads is now free to assist drivers in the clean-up efforts who are navigating road closures around Brisbane. The toll suspension will be in effect until midnight Sunday, 6 March 2022. The toll suspension extends to the Gateway and Logan motorways, AirportLink tunnel and Toowoomba Bypass, as well as the Legacy way, Clem 7 and the Go Between Bridge. It will help people get to where they need to be, without the burden of a toll fee at this difficult time.

…. The Brisbane lord mayor posts in ozbargain?

    • +16

And I'm the Queen of England.

      • +31

Glad to see you back at work your Majesty.

        • +2

Virtual appointments only at this stage.

    • +7

Wow, this is what my rates bills are paying for?!?

      … I like it.

    • +4

He is a longtime lurker first time poster.

      • Since he's a boomer it's 'long time listener, first time caller' to ozbargain.

    • +3

I for one welcome our lord mayor

  • Thanks. About time we get something back. Thousands a year spent on tolls as a family yet no sign of any loyalty program / discounts for heavy users.

    • +2

NSW provides free registration under the Toll Relief program if you reach a certain amount in tolls. For 2021/22, this is $1,462 ($28/week average).

For most cars the registration fee is around $450 per year, but you still need to pay for Greenslip (CTP), and a vehicle check (pinkslip) if your car is over 5 years of age ($40ish).

    • +3

A loyalty program for road tolls? I think you've missed the point of tolls entirely.

I hoped that's what that link was going to be. I saw this in the theater.

  • +2

How generous in times of abundance

  • -5

Adrian is actually one of the good guys…

    • Tell me more about it..

    • -2

Well, putting aside his effective demurral in relation to his alma mater Citipointe Christian College. No gays allowed? Oh "I'll have a chat with the principal". Good for you mate, but how about roundly denouncing that sh!t instead?

    • +11

Yeah, if you're a property developer.

      • +2

Absolutely. I am going through this hell at the moment. Brisbane City Planners are not enforcing any of the town plan. Ol Mate has never seen a development he didn't like.

    • +1

I always wondered who was behind that retail chain. Adrian is, got it.

  • +4

It took me 3 hours to go to work this morning 😭

  • +3

Why they took so long to do this astounds me.

  • +5

The toll roads should be free all the time, traveling into the actual CBD should be where the tolls are.

    • And free pizza should cost money

    • +1

Toll roads won't get built if it's free. No investors will want to fund FREE roads.

      • Fuel levy anyone?

        • Money is used to maintain current public roads. Not enough to make NEW roads.

          “Unlike registration and driver’s licence
fees, which go to state and territory governments, fuel excise is collected by the federal government. Like almost all federal taxes, fuel excise goes into the Government’s general revenue, which is then drawn upon to fund our transport infrastructure. It is the contribution that you, as a motorist, make to the development and maintenance of our road transport system.”

          • +1

            @fchis:

Not enough to make NEW roads.

            LOL!
I would like to see a spreadsheet showing where the money went.

I recall "road money" was being used to build roundabouts and "traffic pacifiers" (speed bumps).
No wonder there is nothing left for new freeways, tunnels and bridges … you know, NEW and improved roads.

  • +6

Last time they did this I got charged anyway. The tunnel under the river was free but because I didnt get off at the first exit there was a charge to the second. Didn't have a tag with me so it was an expensive detour…

  • +1

I'm dumb, is the Brisbane gateway bridge (Sir Leo Hielscher Bridges) included?

    • +5

I think that ones private so it doesnt look like it.

      • +2

I can assure you ALL tolls are free at the moment - Transurban operates all of them and they all turned off.

  • +8

Toll road should be free, we pay expensive rego and tax

    • +1

You…really haven't thought this through, have you.

There's no bottomless pit of money. There's no blank chequebook. Everything must be paid for somehow. Toll roads are paid for via tolls for a multitude of economic and social reasons. Your grossly simplistic suggestion that they should be "free" is wildly misguided.

      • +15

No-one's silly enough to think that free means free. What they mean is they want their taxes spent on roads millions of people use every day, not on useless crap like buying submarines.

        • +1

You are inarguably correct. As if "free" would mean "free"! Mea culpa.

          • @dwarves: Could also mean it's free as in libre rather than gratis. Common sense > semantics.

        • -1

1/3 of our taxes go to welfare. Infrastructure budget contributes only a small portion of our total budget. If most of the welfare spending goes to infrastructure, there won't be any toll roads in Australia. No investors will want to fund FREE roads.

      • +2

        Just odds and round abouts.

Either government raises taxes or borrows (then raises taxes) to pay for the roads.

Alternatively brings in a Toll road operator that charges users pay per use and then gives the money to shareholders who are also tax payers.

Free for all just sounds good. Nothing the government does is free. It just depends on who they tax to get the money from.

    • +12

Toll roads shouldn't be free, but they shouldn't be run as a business for profit. I'd like to see a higher toll while the cost of building it is paid back, and then either a lower toll to cover maintenance or no toll and it's absorbed into the Council's existing road budget.

  • +2

I guess it's Adrian's way of saying sorry Brisbane for last weekend saying to calm down and no need to worry about floods 😂

  • Thank you Lord Mayor for your gracious Ozbargain post!

  • -1

    God save the Lord!

  • +2

    No love for Logan motorway

    • Logan motorway is currently free. Check linkT Website.

Gateway Bridge is not free though

  • +1

    Is this for boats only?

  • +2

If you are the mayor then you should've ticked "I'm associated"

    /s

  • -2

*doesn't include paying for toll on speed cameras (sorry, 'safety cameras ' listed on GPS units) that are erected practically at every point. So keep one eyeball on your speedo and the other on speed limit signs

    • +2

This is why the good lord invented cruise control.

      • .. and RES and COAST (well… brakes) due to those perpetual speed limit changes at every 200m interval to catch you out.

  • +3

I used the legacy way tunnel this morning , and I can see the toll of 5.7 is deducted from my account.
not sure how they say it is free

    • same, I used the CLEM7 and was charged…

    • I just used legacy way, about lunch time, tag didn't even beep.

    • +1

It didnt come into effect until lunchtime yesterday.

  • Do you know if Logan Motorway is waived as well? I spoke to them on Monday and they said no.

    • Yes it is. Please check their LinkT website.

  • -1

lord mayor pls extend until at least next wed!

  • +2

    NSW, your move 😏😏

    • +2

I’ve (Lord Mayor of Sydney) got a formal response: "Yeah, nah"

    • +2

Proudly announcing 83 new toll roads which won’t get you anywhere faster, but will cost 5.91 per km, generating 6.6bn in revenue

  • +7

    I called up Linkt,
They confirmed that all tolls in QLD will be free. Any charges that appear on your account will be refunded.
This also includes Logan and Gateway tolls.
Please contact 13 33 31and they will organise the refund.

    • +2

Of the people who are even aware of this, how many people are going to bother doing that? Should be automatic, what a mess.

    • Do you only need to call them up and ask for a refund for the Logan and Gateway tolls or did they tell you it's for all tolls?

  • +3

Maybe in 50 years you could design raised highways like a proper 21st city.

  • Isn't the Go Between Bridge closed due to flooding? I didn't think you could access it.

    • +1

      Accessible by boat now then?

    • +1

      Technicalities!

    • No it's open. I used it yesterday arvo.

      • Really, checked RACQ road condition marker and was saying west end side is flooded. So you can use it to go from South Bank to Inner City?

  • I believe it's not really free.

All these toll roads are actually controlled/managed by Transurban. As the announcement came from the Lord Mayor and the state, it won't be Transurban doing a charity, but rather that BCC and the state government reimbursing Transurban for any tolls refunded to the user using taxpayer money.

So in the end we are still paying, albeit at a reduced rate as the toll will be shared with other residents of the city/state.

  • -2

Time to go for a scenic drive.

  • +3

The only time people use the overpriced go between bridge I guess.

Oh and such a lovely gesture of free rail to those in flood effected areas, as most of those areas also have flood effected trains,

    • +1

I've never understood that bridge. There is a free alternative within 100m which usually isn't even busy.

      • Money they probably could have spent on improving flood risk

  • +1

Oh the irony. Using taxpayer money to pay for something…

    • +2

Using taxpayer money to pay for something…

And politicians/bureaucrats try to get all the glory for it !!!!
      Repugnant.

  • I can confirm that the Logan and Gateway tolls are free this morning, so you no longer need to call for a refund. Traffic signs confirmed that its free until midnight Sunday, plus my transponder didn't beep going through 3 tolls to work.

  • I sense some frustration in the postings from local authorities. It reads "we told those silly people not to drive anywhere, but they would not listen."
The road infrustructure and public transport can not cope with rain. Instead of fixing and maintaning it, they shift responsibility to the road users who pay their taxes. Well, fix the roads, fix the public transport so that it all works as it should and you will not have to ask people to stay home and be frustrated about it.
As a temporary fix free tolls and free BCC parking is a logical decision though.

  • Free tolls.
    Expensive petrol.
    Perfect!

Potholes damage and very long delays free as well.
