    Will it explode again?

Apparently they have rectified the issue and the new batches have fixed the issue.
Just ordered one… I'll see how it goes.

        https://www.gigabyte.com/Press/News/1930

Despite the fact that both before & after OPP adjustment versions are reliable for real world usage, we still offer owners of the GP-P850GM or GP-P750GM products included in the serial number range listed in Appendix 1 can apply for the *GP-P850GM and GP-P750GM return and exchange service.

Appendix 1 – Serial Number below can apply for Return and Exchange service

        Model name:GP-P850GM
        S/N From SN20343G031011 to SN20513G022635
        Model name:GP-P750GM
        S/N From SN20243G001301 to SN20453G025430

Mine arrived today with the S/N 21433G016953…. so fingers crossed its all gravy.

I wonder if Gigabyte will ever recover from their blown image of their PSUs

      • Is that the reason why galaxy note was stopped ;)

      • +1

OP, you should mention Giga has fixed it:

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Edv3UcJw0nk&t=1s

        https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gigabyte-gp-p750gm-powe…

        https://www.pcgamer.com/au/gigabyte-faulty-psu-response-retu…

To be on the safe side, however, we recommend any customers with either PSU take up Gigabyte's offer of a return and exchange service. Any PSUs with the following serial numbers are eligible:

        GP-P850GM: S/N From SN20343G031011 to SN20513G022635

        GP-P750GM: S/N From SN20243G001301 to SN20453G025430

Looks like only the above SN range are affected with fireworks.

          Thanks!

I added to the description. Although it seems a few people are staying away from Gigabyte due to principals on how they handled the situation previously. Which is fair.

    • this very popular EVGA PSU https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/661170 blown up in my rig in less than 2 months. cheap doesn't mean good.

      • +1

        Ouch.
        I'm still running an EVGA G2 750W from 2016.

        • I still used my thermal take toughpower 750 from 2009 :D

          • @Skramit: Toughpower is generally good quality.

      • "cheap doesn't mean good"

When it comes to PSUs, even if its good, don't buy cuz of the cheap sale.

        ALWAYS do research peps.

        • I had an expensive PSU died within warranty. Apparently it "exploded" inside. They sent a replacement but I sold that one on eBay

    • Will it explode again?

      No, just the once.

    • Depends on how angry you make it.

  • +5

Seems like too good a deal of a Gold, fully modular 850W PSU. What's the catch? Or did I just way overpay for my Seasonic?

    • +17

They have a bad rep due to previously exploding in some cases, see above comments and this video from Gamers Nexus https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xts3pvbcFos&t=1s

    • +15

Yeah the Gigabyte is good value, it has built in fireworks too

    • Nope, PSU / MOBO are 2 core components you don't want to cheap out on. I mainly use Seasonic / Corsair PSUs.

      • +1

Yeah I blew up several cheap ones then got a corsair 620w PSU. It was great. Found out it was made by Seasonic and stuck with them ever since. I thought Gigabyte were OK. I've bought their GPUs before. I prefer EVGA now though.

    • Seasonic make their own PSUs and are excellent manufacturers. I sure they will have a bad PSU model from time to time

Gigabyte get what ever from an OEM and you don't know who made what, even within a single model line.

So no.. You didn't overpay if you wanted to know what you where getting.

  • 1 - 4 weeks wait if you don't need it urgently.

Umart is doing it for $99 + delivery.

  • People need to get over the fact that they're was a model that blew up, you know what blew up for me? A Seasonic power supply, one of the highest rated PSU companies there is. You know what I didn't do? Bitch and complain for the next 5 years.

    • +1

Why not having a victim mentality is highly sought after in Western world

    • +1

I honestly think at this point people are just mem(e?)ing it.

Samsungs had their phones ignite as well, the jokes are easy but I agree, people have blown things out of proportion. (sorry I had to do it).

But if I can save a few bucks from people doing that then its a win for me.

    • +17

I think the problem is less about a previous model that blew up but rather their way of handling the situation. If I remember correctly, their PR staff refused to admit that the builds were faulty and tried to push all the blame on people for "overclocking" their machines.

Until it became widespread and then they were like OK, we'll replace <a portion of these> PSUs which _could_ explode _under extreme circumstances_

Honestly, I think if they just accepted that there was a build fault on day one and said OK we screwed up, we'll fix the issue and send you a replacement, I don't think people would be so salty about it.

      • +1

it also didnt help they were brand new in the PSU space, and one of their first models was that one they didn't want to admit they were new and knew jackshit.

But why bloody push back? idiots

    • +2

But you have still brought it up.

Also, have you bought a Seasonic PSU since?

      • Yes I have, Using one in my mums PC. Wanted specific cabling for mine so went corsair for my PC.

I didn't bring it up, other people in here already did, which is why I commented.

    • Does your model form Seasonic go through the verification of 100% blow up rate?

      • Yes it was a certain batch, all had a bad CAP on them.

    • +3

I don't think the issue was whether someone somewhere had a problem with the psu and no other psus ever have a problem, rather that there was a fundamental design flaw and a huge number of failed returned gigabyte psus. It's not being a victim to call out design flaws, bad company practices and low quality products.

      • I think a capacitor or some other component was the wrong direction. Gigabyte went down the route of blaming the customers iirc.

    • The problem is I guess if people dont, then sometimes companies get away with things especially if the companies denied any issues in the first place then the only way to get them to admit is to show that there are many people voicing the same issues.

    • Mistakes can happen, it's what companies do in response that matter. Gigabyte refused to acknowledge the problem and take any action for over 6 months when the issue was first discovered. They only eventually offered replacements and fixed the issue after being put in the spotlight and blasted by publications like Gamers Nexus. Would you want to support a company like that?

If Seasonic offered you a replacement or fix within a reasonable timeframe then I see no issue with them either. (I have a Seasonic PSU myself)

  • +2

Thanks I was looking for a new fire starter.

Why would anyone buy from these guys, ever? Did they publicly apologise? Did they recall the PSUs? No? Then no, get someone elses.

  • Sweet. Maybe I can gut the PSU from the nzxt h1 and put this in.

  • +10

Unfortunately I got one of the potentially exploding gigabyte psus in my build from tech fast which I was not very pleased about. So before I upgraded to an Rtx3080 I swapped out the psu for a corsair psu (huge job to dismantle most of the pc to rewire it). Didn't want $3k worth of pc being taken out by a shitty psu.
I'm certainly not impressed with gigabyte having the issue in the first place and also the way they handled it was pretty crap too. So I won't be buying gigabyte again.

    • +1

So many folks skimp on PSU.

      It's really important not to.

    • Don't want to stress you out but my Corsair RMx PSU exploded under warranty. Got a replacement straight away without any question.

      If you're unlucky, then F.

  • +3

I hear these PSUs have been very helpful in Ukraine.

    3 Tanks taken out already.

Xmas gift for the in-laws sorted, thx.

  • Thanks, birthday gift for my wife sorted

  • Im really hunting for good PSU 750-850w. But NO, NOT THIS ONE. I wouldn’t risk a fire on a $99 psu. Hard pass gigabyte

  • It's nice that they've fixed it and all, but… Seasonic exists. So does Corsair. And EVGA.
