40% off Selected D-Link Network Accessories at Dick Smith

190

Thanks to micromnml from the EOP thread on Whirlpool to alerting me to the D-Link Powerline 4 Port Starter Kit being on sale at Dick Smith. I bought it today.

Later I checked and all D-Link home networking products are 40% off as per page 11 of their catalogue.

    Hi Guys,

I've done some research on this and the two best items price wise are the Wireless N300 (DIR-632) Router & 3G broadband router (DIR-412)

The Wireless N300 router is $60 which is on-par with the cheapest price on Staticice and is DD-WRT compatible. That turns this $60 router into the features of a $600 router with 8MB Flash & 32MB RAM.

The DIR-615 Wireless router is DD-WRT compatible as well but can be had for cheaper elsewhere.

The 3G broadband router is on par price wise with MSY.

All in all good deals to be had from DSE at the moment.

    • So which one should I get for a Wireless N300 router? DIR 632?

      • DIR-632 is the better deal. 8MB Flash Vs. 4MB Flash in the DIR-615.

The extra flash allows you to run 'mega' builds of DD-WRT. This gives you all the possible features of DD-WRT.

      • I checked the website. None of the routers DSE sell are DD-WRT compatibile according to their compatibility list (http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/support/router-database) please correct me if I'm wrong. I'd really like to check that firmware out.

    • Saying DD-WRT makes it into a $600 router is a bit rich, a real $600 would blow DD-WRT out of the water. But for $60, who's complaining?

Its not Bob81's comment, flashing with DD-WRT or the other alternatives (Tomato, Gargoyle) adds some great features that you get in a $600 router. If you havnt tried DD-WRT, its highly recommended. Many sites/reviews refer to the firmware as being equivalent to a $600 router.

I actually have a $600 router though, a branch series Juniper SRX, and DD-WRT doesn't come close. I have been running DD-WRT for ages myself, and while it is great, it simply isnt anywhere near the juniper.

      • $600 router can do more routing (real routing - BGP for example, properly).

DD-WRT, Oleg, or other customer firmwares can do different fancy stuff (Web server, Mail server, DNS server, Print server, Webcam monitoring, Play mp3, UPNP/DLNA server, SSL tunnels, Wake up on LAN/WAN etc…) - need a supported router with USB port(s) though.

      • I agree for $600 you get a cisco (I don't mean linksys I mean CISCO) one of those badboys just wont break. Those things are built like Super Nintendos they will never break. At most you will have to blow on a component to get some dust off and start it again.

        • I have to wonder how many people in a '40% off Selected D-Link Network Accessories at Dick Smith' thread would be thinking to buy a $600 router anyway??? The fact that you can get a decent one that can access the cool features of DD-WRT for a measly $60 is gonna be good enough for most folks!

          Horses for courses, guys! ;)

    • no long ago, DIR-632 was selling at $49 only
      http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/67186

      • Yup. picked it up for my sister for $49 when they had the one day deal. The only letdown is the 8port switch is 10/100…

        • correct, the reason that I didn't pick one last time is because of not gigabit lan

    • Are you sure the DIR-632 supports DD-WRT? I cannot find it here http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/support/router-database

  • DSE can pricematch, so its worth checking staticice.com.au for a reference point.

    • DES price match is a joke. 8 out of 10 times DSE will tell u that it's below their cost and they will not honour the price match.

Office Works is way better when it comes down to price match.

      • agree. tried price matching with DSE before and got rejected both times.

Looks like Officeworks are on the ball with this deal. They have lowered the price on their D-link products to be the same price as DSE.
        http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/search/d+link

  • Damn DSE has none of the 500mbit EOP adapters. I'm in the market for them ATM. Don't really want to settle for 200mbit and limit myself in the future.

    • That an the fact that the 4 port switch on the 200mbit EOP bundle is 10/100 only. Seeing that makes ccrap sad :(

  • Just got the EOP DHP 347 for $90 after discount :)

  • Kogan has the Powerline AV Network Starter Kit by D-Link (DHP-307AV) for $69 + delivery ($9 to SA).

    http://www.kogan.com.au/shop/d-link-powerline-av-kit/

  • I'm new to this DD-WRT biz. If I buy the DIR-632 and flash it, what kind of modem should I run? ATM I've got a crappy Belkin modem/router combo.
