What's the discount? What's the usual price?

From the description, battery life looks like it's meant to be a selling point, but the reviews are a worry.

    • Well…. The 20 day battery is meant to be standby time so with usage of course it’s going to work for 3-4 days just like the good old days. People are so stupid so don’t heed the reviews

      • i think the smaller screen and lower res also extends the battery life …… you can get a full screen smart phone at this price point, but small, basic phone for young kids these are great because they aren’t going to spend much screen time on it so you you don’t need to worry if their phone is charged every night , it’s also small so fits into kids pockets….. my son had his first phone at 5 years so that he could call me if needed, or i could call him if running late for pick ups etc.

there is still a market for small basic phones with long battery life.

The Amazon reviews say battery life is disappointing, which doesn't make sense to me.

          • +1

@shaybisc: That’s cuz advertisement says up to 20 days standby and people get 3-4 days worth of usage per charge cuz they use it. So it’s a huge disappointment for not reading the info properly

        • Would you pls recommend which other full screen smart phone can we get at this price point ? Preferably a dual sim one

          • @SydOzber: There's plenty of options, but whether they're realistically any good (either on day 0 when you open it, or in a year's time when there's no software/security patches) is another matter. You'll probably have better luck with network locked phones if you can live without dual sim.

Yesteryesteryear flagships with higher end SoCs might be a better option IMO. I find my old Pocophone F1 from 2018 still holds up surprisingly well in March 2022, and the software updates only just came to an end with MIUI 12 (Android 11)… even though these may cost a bit more (unless you're willing to go used), they'll perform significantly better than budget-class phones which are much newer.

@SydOzber: not sure why lacking good mobile deals these days

last year we had plenty of very good deals like realme c3 that can last 2 - 3 days of usage

    Better than 3310?

Can you put an authenticator on it?

    • it’s what i was thinking ….work gave me an iphone for authenticatior but battery goes dead after a few days ……. if this could run authenticatior for a couple of weeks that would be sweet ….. hate the monday work from home and phone is dead over weekend so need to charge so can use authentication to log in before meetings start …..

      • Unlikely. One of the reviews noted you couldn't install the check in app, which suggests a pretty closed ecosystem.

set reminder on your other phone to charge that iphone on sunday night before sleep…

if my phone alarm goes off after i’m in bed i tend to ignore things rather than get out of bed again …

          • @garage sale: Geesus
.. i meant set reminder at 7pm sunday.
Or you slept at 6pm Sundays? Cant help

Actually, I have been reading up on these KaiOS phones (mainly reddit), and there are still numerous bugs, including unreliable alarm functionality.

A new release of KaiOS is coming out but it is not clear if these early Nokia KaiOS phones will allow the upgrade that fixes alarms and various other issues.

The battery life claims (20 days) are only for standby with internet off, with internet on (which you need for the WhatsApp messages), apparently these phones are more like 2-3 days/

          • @yoho: I came in here to look at OS comments; I was hoping they'd revived Symbian, since I have a wide range of apps, and I like its ability to multitask.

Ah well. Gonna keep an eye on Kai anyway.

Here's the app store for KaiOS phones. This app looks like an authenticator, but I don't know what it's like as the store doesn't seem to have screenshots or reviews.

    • Whats an authenticator?

  • Now this could actually be a great phone for the elderly, it's got the style that they're used to and love and the modern features that they (might) need.

Of course the 2.8" screen is still tiny, but that's a feature of these phones apparently

Does this have VoLTE? If not then it’s going to be useless after the 3G shutdown like other early 4G phones.

  • Don't have the time right now, but my two cents

The 3310 remake was alright bc it was running a similar thing to the OG, Symbian or whatever it was called. This meant it could run oldschool jar (Java) games (my main reason to buy it), and it ran like a champ, would last a month (tested myself) no problems on standby, but with actual use I'd get a good week or two usually too, depending on how much I used it, which is a ripper.

I eventually bought the 8810 (I think, idk, it was the Matrix banana phone) on clearance a couple years back too and it was a shitshow comparatively. It ran KaiOS which I was very interested in (same as this phone) which aims to bring smart phone features to basic bitch phones, ideally for developing countries and whatnot. To it's credit, the Google Maps was surprisingly not shit, like in a pinch you could definitely use it. But the OS had a bunch of issues and seemingly many to do with working with buttons, the buttons would ALWAYS (profanity) up, like if you hit 3 thrice to get the letter F, it would 9 times out of 10, register 4 hits and loop you back to D. This would happen on every button and it didn't matter if you took your time, it didn't matter if you rushed, every four or five letters you'd try to type you'd end up with one of them (profanity) up on you. The WiFi hotspot was also absolute shit and would drop all the time, ALL the time. No Java support either which sucks if you were buying it for genuine nostalgic purposes and wanted to bust out some of the old gem mobile games. But most of all,

The battery on it was shit, it would last a couple days use at absolute best.

So if you genuinely want the OG experience (or something similar) in 2022, the 3310 is still my bet. It plays all your old shit, it supports memory cards and modern networks, it's basically the 2600 Classic I had in the day but in a slightly cheaper build pretty well. The old, OLD proper old one, Facebook mobile was a blast to revist. Anyway, if you want a fun old school go at it, WITH a good battery, 3310 it. If you want a button phone with some modern functionality, including some modern shortcomings like a shit battery and dodgy WiFi, then go with these ones. As far as I can really tell, all the KaiOS ones have the same issues.

Frankly they're all way too overpriced and you shouldn't pay any more than the 29 I paid for both. That being said, I threw my banana one at Cashies in my last haul a few months ago and got 49 for it with no box, so idk, I guess there's some demand out there.
