Seems to be best price for a 3 pack.

Just came across this deal while searching for new mesh routers that support Android tethering; NBN's been bogging down these days due to the rain and thunderstorms and I wanted to use my mobile data as backup.

XD6 explicitly says it doesn't support Android tethering and XT8 fails to mention it at all.

  • Can you tell what android tether is. I am getting confused in Google

    • I think it's when you using your android phone usually via cable (but maybe also in wifi hotspot mode) and use your phone's data as internet for your home wifi.
OP said due to poor NBN in his area… I've been having the same issue too due to heavy rain and it would come in handy for me too.

      • You got it. The recent thunderstorm fried our HFC box so I've been using mobile hotspot for 2 people working from home in different rooms and it was not a pleasant experience. I wanted to use my phone's data but through our current WiFi mesh network.

          out of curiosity.
Would it be via USB tethering or via mobile hotspot?

          • @Tamagotchi Breeder: USB tethering plugged into a USB port on the router. Devices connected to the router/wifi per usual.

        • +1

For tethering, you could just get one of these and attach it to the WAN port of any old router (mesh or otherwise).

          Also very useful for travel.

          • @dontpanic: Interesting! Will have it on my wish list.

          • @dontpanic: Hey do you have this? Just wanted to confirm if a setyp like below works.

Phone (usb tether) -> (usb) GL device (LAN) -> (WAN) existing router

How are the speeds given only 2.4ghz? Or doesn't matter because connected via cable?

Office works price beat available too

    • Thank You for the idea! Got a 3 pack today for 284. Apparently Officeworks had only 6 in stock across Australia. They were quite surprised by the huge margin before they price matched. Officeworks has it listed for 354!!

      • I would have bought this Asus today, if I hadn't purchased the Google Nest WiFi 2 pack yesterday. Also did the Officeworks price beat, which brought the cost down to $236, from their listed price of $399!

        • Who did you price beat against?

          • @expertreader: Catch had it for $249

            • @AaronL: Jesus you lucky,

I just have huge battles with the lady on officeworks Glebe,

First she explains they only prices match with retail shop( Jess she must thing Bing Lee is tiny Chinese computer shop)

              • @Anubizz: It took a few people to review, and a bit of time, but generally not that much pushback. Catch and Officeworks both part of Wesfarmers so not sure if that helped.

      • EDIT - officeworks had it listed for 534

  • XT8 support it.

    • Thank you for that.

  • want to save myself a few hours to research, can anyone suggest if this is one of the better mesh wifi solution? or should I go with google's nest wifi? Thank you

    • +2

If you're only after fast, stable, large wifi coverage and don't need IPv6 or 4G backup or Android tethering, you could go with Tenda MW6 for less than half price of this. I'm not sure what Google nest brings to the table but XD4 seems to be better specced.

      • Thanks champ

      • What's IP v6 in this context?

      • Do I need to use 1 of it as a router? I was wondering if I can just connect these to my ASUS router instead?

        • You can use them all as nodes for AiMesh. I have my AX88U as main router and all 3 XD4 as nodes. Coverage, speed and ease of use is really good, highly recommend.

      • I'd argue against the MW6, I have deployed one, and it's a mess. Need to wireshark the drop outs at the new house it's in.

I looked at this post to see what this is like to replace it.

        • That's unfortunate. Mine's been going strong for 2 years and counting.

Spec wise this XD4 seems to have similar grunt. Maybe you need something with more memory like XD6 or XT8 (I'm considering this but will wait for a sale)

  • I got the 2 pack a few weeks ago.

Nice surprise was that each device was a router and not a router or node (e.g, each device has a WAN and LAN port). They also have 512Mb RAM instead of the advertised 256Mb.

I know someone else who had the same with the 2 pack. With any luck, the 3 pack is the same.

    • I can confirm you get 3 of routers not 1+2

  • Recommend these. Especially at this price

  • No wired backhaul

Ports: RJ45 for Gigabits BaseT for WAN/LAN x 1, RJ45 for Gigabits BaseT for LAN x1

I assume one can Connect Directly to NBN FTTP via ethernet cable without wifi / router

    • +1

      They do have wired backhaul.

Not my use case but one unit should be able to act as a router for FTTP and the other 2 as nodes.

      • You get 3 router in Australia, not 1+2. So you correct we can hard-wire this thing. Not really sure why we need to do that as Australia internet so sux you will run out ISP speed long before you run out router speed.

  • A fair bit of bad 1 star reviews including frequent connection drop outs

  • There is 1 left in bingle Haymarket if anyone interested, I can confirm you get 3 router not 1 + 2 node so if you want you can do hard-wire.

Setting up not as good as Samsung smartthings, sad really Samsung decided to discontinued that product, expecially at long last smart device will be standardise

  • Could someone advise whether this would be suitable for a Telstra AW1000 5G modem (5G wireless internet). It has a LAN/WAN port, 4 Ethernet ports, and USB connection in it.
