Got one when last deal was on around boxing day - Last week i hit my first 5km run ever using Garmin Coach. Its supreme overkill for anyone not skiing, skydiving, surfing etc but i have really enjoyed the journey using their free service and will likely keep running now i have started to gain momentum.

    • +1

Got a 6 pro when there was a jb deal around August. Got it mostly for open water swimming, and figuring I should start running, which I have. But the hiking features are pretty awesome (though the 7 has a touch screen which works make make a lot easier). Not regretting my purchase, though it's pretty big and heavy, and that's not even the 6x, which is bigger.

  • does this one have saphire glass?
I have the fenix 5 saphire and it was like $100 more for the saphire edition (also had wifi/metal strap + silicon strap) but I bump it so regularly, I can't be without the extra glass protection.

reason for upgrade is I want the payment option on the watch.

fenix 5 still going strong 3 or 4 ? years later

    • Doesn't look like sapphire version unfortunately

    • I used to have a saphire model and have transitioned to standard glass for the last few years. I haven't noticed any additional scratching and one of my watches broke a fall from a bike sliding around 2m on concrete and didn't come up with any scratching on the glass. The housing was an entirely different story :D

Honestly try taking a look at the non saphire one, the clarity is night and day

    • +1

Have had a non-sapphire model for almost a year and not a scratch even though it gets banged up a lot.

Really worth it at this price, very motivating for getting exercise done. I'm going from running ~6km a week to about 20-25.

The hiking functionality is great, gives you a hint that you're off/on-course if you're following a trial.

    • Is sapphire even needed?, I've had my 6X since launch and the screen is perfect.

      • +1

Used mine around the house during lockdown. I bump it more on my door frames and desk , rather than rocks when I am outdoor.

      • If you go for a dive into a pool lined with exposed aggregated, bottom out and smash the watch face into the rocks the sapphire won’t scratch. The DLC bezel will, however.
Source: me, resort pool, 2022. I believe my dive would’ve qualified me for the Olympics.

        • +2

How was ur face after that performance?

    • +2

Non sapphire does scratch. But tempered glass screen protector does a good job of mitigation.

      • I still see sapphire as a $ grab by Garmin.
No scratches after 1.5 years and my watch get knocked all the time.
The bezel is a different story.,

Cool. My Fenix has plenty of scratches. So did my va3. Just saying that they can scratch. You seem to be pretty lucky so may it continue.

    • Fenix 3HR still going great here too - replaced the battery for $20 but i really want the Epix 2…

  • Understand this model is larger and heavier?

    • +1

Yep. Bigger battery too so lasts longer. But it's pretty big and heavy.

  • +1

I don't understand why some say the 6x is heavy, coming from decades of stainless steel and silver, the 6x is big but like half the weight of my classic watches.

    • +1

It’s not the weight. It’s the size. Would recommend people try this on in store to see how massive it is.

      • I have pretty average wrists and it s not wider than my wrist. I think buyer's remorse is more likely with the smaller 6 or 6s. The 6x is the only one that display 8 data points on one screen.

  • I think the key is to have rubber band instead of metal which reduces the weight considerably

This is a great investment if you are looking for a serious exercise watch. Got mine around 8 months ago and it does everything I could ever want and more. Typical battery life for GPS tracking my rides is 70+ hours on a full charge, 8 day battery when not tracking, and can give you great indications of how you're doing via the "Body battery" measure which I find pretty accurate if I'm exercising 3-4 days per week.

It's almost completely useless in a gym environment though, other than the HR measurement as it's just not built to track your workouts. Especially with weights. I also find the mapping feature to be too slow and fussy to use as a real phone replacement, unless you have already preloaded a route and are simply following it (this is easier to do when hiking/runnin/walking than when cycling). It also boasts the ability to navigate you to a point, but entering that address is so labour intensive that you'll just give up in 3 seconds and pull out your phone.

Finally, having seen reviews of the 7X, touchscreen aside, the fundamental problems of navigation, mapping, gym/weight workout trackings and a few others haven't been solved. So, I would say get this one and save the Thousand or whatever.

    • +1

i agree but if you are serious about running you need a chest HR as well, the sprints dont work with watch alone

      • Having compared results side to side with my galaxy watch, the fenix still has it's issues, especially at the start of a workout, but overall seems to be slightly more consistent as far as heart rate, gps etc. The coach is a bit over the top personally, but I guess it works for some people.

        • hr is only accurate when its steady, at the start of work out, if you dont warm up it will spike then after 5 min or so it will remain steady enough to get accurate reading, if you want 100% accurate you need a chest strap, hence if you plan to do sprints, you 100% need chest strap - watch - any watch cant measure this accurately enough yet

          • +1

@botchie: Yea I use the same chest strap on both watches.

      • Totally. I noticed the delay which improved significantly when i got the Garmin HRM Pro.

    • +1

It's useful in the gym if you login to garmin via browser and create your workouts beforehand on the web the sync to your watch. If you go the gym and try to add the exercises as you go it's not useful.

      • Great point.

      • The rep count is not very reliable though.

        • When the workout is defined before hand it is a bit more accurate but still not reliable. The ui is good enough to let you adjust the reps before going to the next exercise.

          • @ooooooooyeahhhhh: That's true, but personally I've found the whole thing to be more trouble then it's worth. I much prefer the simpler and more streamlined workout tracking approach used by the likes of Apple Watch and Samsung Galaxy Watch. They don't track the rep counts or even individual exercises, but still give you the plenty of info about your workout.

            • @elektron: I see, i haven't used them for workouts, I do like seeing the muscle groups on garmin and scheduling the workouts for the week in the calendar. Going to the gym and having the watch tell me what my next set should be and count the rest time between sets is also great. But naturally each person has their preferences and uses.

              • @ooooooooyeahhhhh: You're obviously a power user and getting more of your money's worth out of your Fenix than I am. I don't even know the names of some of the excersises I do and I vary my rest times between sets, depending on how I feel on the day. And yes, with Apple or Android Wear watches you need to pay for 3rd party apps / subscriptions in order to get similar workout tracking features that Garmin comes with out of the box.

  • I don't run, but i do play a lot of racket sport, swim, and the occasional hike - would this be an overkill? would something like the Venu 2 be more suitable?

    • I think it depends on what money you're willing to part with. Obviously, this can do what you need. The question is, are you willing to pay a little extra for a few benefits and a lot of features that you currently don't need so much. If the extra dosh isn't all that important to you, and the physical design/ux of the watch fits your style, go for it. If not, get another product, Garmin or otherwise that suits your taste and budget best.

    • It's good for hiking, but you can hike without one. There's no in built tracking for racquet sports but there are some third party apps. Guess it depends on what you want to get from the watch.

    • +1

yes, get something cheaper, even their base 245 model , this watch is for running no1, and on board music no2

    • Venu 2s if you want a good looking watch that you can also do all the activities you mentioned with. Really this watch is for triathlons etc.

    No sapphire no thanks

Fenix 6 is a great platform - Worthy of the upvotes at a decent price point.

Don’t forget to stack discounts by using ShopBack gift cards at 3% CB.

  • +2

I know it's an overkill for a casual runner like me, but I've gained so much weight since last year when I started WFH. Hopefully it will encourage me to run more often

    • +3

You can do it fella, this is exactly me. Shout out if you want to follow each other on Connect and have an exercise buddy. Been nice getting the likes from friends.

  • Dang, I just missed it. Would anyone guess the stock might come back at all?

  • I have an Approach S62 which supports pay - but haven't found any banks that offer it in Aus? Has anyone had any luck linking a credit card to Garmin Pay?

    • +2

Yes, I've used Garmin pay (NAB visa) on my Garmin 645 for the last 4 years

  • This post has got me wanting another activity tracker after my Galaxy Watch Active 2 died.

Might go the Venue 2 Plus.
