Pretty cool idea. Waterloo is probably the best location for a Beginner IMO as a 9d member.

It seems Parra is off the list as they don't make pizza lol.

    • Good advice, my date wanted to go Bouldering and I've only been Alexandria 9d

Does anyone want to go on a date?

If you are a man it's gonna be a platonic date

For casual visits I reckon this is a great deal, even without the extra discount. Most people's climbing sessions last about 2-3 hours depending on how hard you climb. With food, drinks and a date, will probably be longer.

By the way, I believe its normally $7 for shoe hire, and if you are a student with a valid ID, you get a 9% discount on day passes and memberships (not sure about shoe hire). They also have $14 student Friday's.

If you end up going every few weeks and don't plan on hiring shoes and buying pizza/ice cream every time, then a 10 day pass is worth picking up (10 visits for price of 9). For a membership to be worth you have to go at least 6 times a month. Shoes are also worth buying if you plan on going more than 10 or so times as well.

Otherwise, for casual visits this deal is quite decent value. Here's my quick opinion of all the gyms based on what I've heard/seen:

Waterloo - Newest gym, very nice space, good training area, has a mini store for climbing gear. Some lower grade climbs can actually be quite difficult (hard), while some higher grades can be relatively easy (soft)

Alexandria - Oldest gym, haven't heard much about it other than the climbs are quite soft (probably good for beginners). Looks small, strange layout to me.

Parramatta - Small, good training area. Some climbs can be quite hard and not that beginner friendly from what I've heard, although I'm sure they have enough beginner friendly climbs for most people. No pizza.

Lane Cove - My home gym (probably have a fair bit of bias towards it), decently sized, small training area, has a mini store for climbing gear. Pretty big range of climbs in terms of style and difficulty.

Enogerra - Didn't even know this existed. It's in QLD.

Most of this info is on their website. Dogs are also welcome, which is a nice bonus for most people. Feel free to pop a DM if anyone climbs at Lane Cove or has questions about shoes/climbing etc. I'm not the best climber but I'm happy to try help

Do you know what the weight area is like? I currently go to a regular gym but am getting a bit bored of it and wouldn't mind trying out bouldering. Would still be nice to do some actual weight training as well if the weight area is decent.

Depends on which climbing gym you go to. Climbfit in st Leonard's has the best weight area that I've been to. It's got a decent number of machines, squat rack/cage etc. All the basics plus a little more. Their weekly pricing isn't bad either. They've got a new location in Macquarie but not sure how that compares.

If we're talking about 9 degrees specifically, the weight areas usually aren't that impressive. Parramatta and Waterloo have the best training areas, but it's not much compared to a normal gym. Pretty sure most have resistance bands, dumbbells, Olympic bar and plates, a squat rack and a bench. Pretty bare bones. They do have basic calisthenics stuff as well, with most, if not all places having pull-up bars, rings, parallettes and a hangboard (for finger strength training).

You may not be able to do all the exercises you would do in a normal gym, but it's enough for climbing specific strength. Honestly, if you just look up pictures of climbing gyms or look at their websites, you'll get a decent enough idea of what their training areas look like.

        • I agree with @Traffic Cones it's pretty basic compared to a fitness gym but Alexandria 9d weights room has Air conditioning so I used it for a break between climbs when it was hot

    • Thanks, updated post to shoe hire to $7 I remembered it wrong

  • Ah shame is a 2 person deal and not a single one

  • Is this 2 days in a row or just two entries at any time?

    • It's 2, 1 day passes or 1 per person booking. Sorry it wasn't clear I didn't figure it out till just now.

  • The price is still 55$, minus 10$ with the code ?

    • $28ppx2=$56
      $56-$10=$46 OZBARGAIN or WELCOME10
      $46/2=$23pp
