    Soo tempting…

    • +1

nah, just wait for the next update, surely they have one coming, its 4 years old now

      • +7

Not a chance in another 3 years mate

      • +10

I think the OLED was the update, don't expect another one soon I reckon

      • +4

I wouldn't count on it as this is the updated version!
Not bad margins for Nintendo on what is essentially a ~7 year old tablet with some bluetooth joysticks and a slightly newer panel tech.

Just in case anybody wishes to have the 7 year old comment justified - the (slightly customised and downclocked) Tegra X1 at the heart of the Switch was first released in 2015.

        • People around here don't like hearing these facts. Many get very defensive when it's pointed out how overpriced the Switch is.

          • +3

            @PainToad:

            how overpriced the Switch is.

You cannot justify the price by the hardware itself , it is not a computer.

            • +5

@superforever: It is a computer, running on commodity hardware - just running a custom OS and using essentially SD cards in a slightly diffent form factor.

I can justify the question of price given that there is mostly identical hardware around using the same SOC / RAM etc. I understand that its a unique product without "direct" competition but that doesn't mean that I can't reasonably question why their RRP is so drastically different to other products using the same or similar hardware.

This culture of "its not the same" or "paying for the experience" is why questioning Apple or Weber or Thermomix etc on their pricing is met with outright derision by their legions of fans.

              • @baronorder: I agree it's overpriced, but they won't drop the price until people stop buying it in droves

                • @chromium: If idiots are willing to pay so much for such dated and cheap hardware, whilst Nintendo were able to pump out Wii U ports for most of the generation, I can't blame them.

                • +4

                  @chromium:

I agree it's overpriced, but they won't drop the price until people stop buying it in droves

Doesn't that in essence say that it is not overpriced then. Overpriced = price>worth = amount market will pay.
Just because it's overpriced based on your estimate of it's worth, doesn't mean it's overpriced in general.
e.g. All gin is all overpriced to me, as I think it's worthless liquid, but that's just me. I'm not going to belittle people for buying $40 Gin and call them idiots if they enjoy it.

P.S. I don't own a Switch either… but if you have an example where I can have a similar experience playing new nintendo games for cheaper I'm interested.

                  • +1

@NigelTufnel: Overpriced as in mark up from cost price, not perceived value.

                    • @PainToad: I'm keen to play Mario Party with motion controls, maybe even on the move with some kind of portable capability - do you have any cheaper alternatives that are not overpriced? Anything else which can satisfy my cravings which is cheaper?

        • Yeah, it's Nintendo's version of "think different". The Wii was the least powerful of it's gen and sold more than the ps3 or xbox 360. Think they target families, who probably buy into the branding and reliability. It's probably less powerful as they are focusing on mass production and battery life. Must be enough money in the portable category as Steam Deck was made.

          • +1

@Cave Fire: The Wii was also priced very reasonably at US$249 compared to the other consoles of its generation as both the PS3 (US$499) and XB360 (US$400) were incredibly expensive / advanced custom designs with very high end specs for the time. The price alone was just as big a factor in the success of that console as the family friendly games and motion control system.

This situation was part of the reason why both Sony and Microsoft decided for the PS4 / Xbox One to go to AMD for a remarkably similar customised existing CPU/GPU in order to bring down costs and complexity.

Nintendo is the only one really making those Apple type margins in the portable game - if you have a look at the base SteamDeck its selling for US$399 (~AU$555) so only $100 more than this and its an absolute steal for the price given the hardware involved. You can't buy a complete laptop or mini PC that will go anywhere near the performance of that device for the price let alone another portable. I would be really surprised if Valve is actually making any money whatsoever on the base model.

I understand that Nintendo is charging what the market will bear and they sell like hotcakes due to the ecosystem they have built - still doesn't mean that the value for money can't be questioned.

        • +1

Do any new credit cards feature this protection? From what I understand, this is a grandfathered policy on existing credit cards that originally had this feature.

    Seem more people prefer white.

    • -5

Naa once you go black you never go back.

    • Only way to get official white joy cons, while you can always get neons later. At least, that's why I got the white, despite initially thinking neon looked better.

      • Neon were always sold out before with only white available .
Looks like neon are finally saturated on the market finally as well .

        • I wonder if they made more white ones, or if enthusiasts tend more towards it than regular people because I never see neon posted in forums and such.

    • Seem more people prefer white.

I said that because more people bought white with this deal.

  • Thank you!
