  • Yes, it is cheap. But 4GB RAM???

    • +18

4GB is excellent for a tablet this cheap. Clearly you're expecting too much from a $194 tablet :)

Technically speaking, the chipset is too weak to benefit from more than 4GB RAM anyway.

      • -8

4GB is not excellent for any tablet. The chipset can handle 6GB

        • +8

I've done enough research into this chipset to know that this definitely doesn't need more than 4GB of RAM. It's a dual-core GPU with an underpowered CPU.

When multi-tasking, you'll obviously be able to have a few extra Chrome tabs open with 6GB of RAM, but for the price, it's good that they used their budget elsewhere. 4GB is a good balance.

The Lenovo M10 Plus is another popular tablet which is about $100 more than this. Even with the additional budget, they still stuck to either a 2GB or 4GB RAM variant - because 4GB RAM is enough for these cheap tablets.

        • +5

You want more you pay more

    • +2

Yes but also less than half the price of the keyboard case for the S8 ultra too

    • lmao I clicked on here being ready to roll when I thought it was 2 or 3.

      • Exactly right. 4GB is more than you'd usually find at this price point. dosada is expecting too much.

128GB Model also available for $259 Delivered

    • +13

Considering this has a MicroSD slot, it would make more sense to save that money and buy a 128GB MicroSD on the next OzBargain deal. You'll end up spending a lot less, for a lot more storage.

FYI, you can install apps on the MicroSD and run it directly off it. Some apps aren't officially supported, but there's an option in Android developer settings where you can force all apps to be installed on external storage (it works).

      • +2

Agree, just saw that the A8 has expandable memory.

        • +1

What speed is the internal memory vs expandable though?

  • +2

Can someone give some examples of what I would use it for?

Bought one of thoes ASUS Google Nexus 7 back in the day and now it just collects dust.

    • +3

I'm in the same boat. Price looks great but I have a phone, laptop and PC….

You're not one to talk, Mr.BargainsGrabber.

    • +1

Can use this as photo frames which displays photo collections from google photos.

      • +1

Except the photos are pitch black and you're looking from 20 degrees away :)

Nah I'm joking. It's not that bad. It's just not an ideal option, as it would make a lot more sense to buy a digital picture frame with a better screen instead (or an older iPad OR older Android tab with a better IPS screen).

      • +1

        Get google hub or something

    • +1

I actually powered up by old Nexus 7, I had planned to read comics on it, then I looked at my S22 Ultra next to it and realised it really wasn't much bigger. So back into the cupboard it went

    • Content consumption machine.

I use mine to watch my streaming services and youtube etc.

      Oh and browse ozbargain.

Well my samsung galaxy tab s2 8.0 is perfect still for all that.

I wish they would remake a lightweight 7 inch tablet but with monster specs like high amount of ram powerful soc cpu gpu etc.

But has to be under 300g or it becomes unwieldy imho.

  • +3

I have this. I know it's under $200 but the screen is meh.

    • Still its a good paper weight .

      • Bit of an expensive paper weight, if I must say…

    • Considering the main thing you're going to be looking at is the screen, I would heavily take this into consideration when purchasing this tablet.

The TFT screen tech is the reason why the screen is "meh".

  • +15

Just a quick write-up for anyone looking into buying this.

The screen on this is TFT (so expect bad viewing angles), but the resolution is pretty good (1200 x 1920). It's a big 10.5" screen too, so the same size as an older generation iPad Pro - and slightly smaller than the new 10.9" iPad Air models.

Since this is the 64GB model here, it has 4GB RAM (compared to 3GB in the 32GB version). 4GB is excellent for a tablet of this price. Anyone wanting more than 4GB of RAM clearly isn't using the tablet for the right purpose, as 4 is more than enough for the tasks this chipset is capable of handling.

Camera is a camera. It's 1080P which is decent, but don't expect too much. It's still good enough for Video Calls and would make a lot of sense if you're buying it for someone who needs a big screen due to impaired eye-sight.

The battery capacity is a little bit smaller than the recent iPad models, although iOS is more efficient than Android so you'll have to take that with a grain of salt.

The chipset is the real issue here as it was released all the way back in August 2019. The chipset is very weak, and if I'm continuing to compare it with iPads, it will most likely feel about the same, if not, slower than the 2014 iPad Air 2.

Decent buy, but you need to know what you're going to use it for before purchasing.

    • Chipset will be quick enough for light use, web browsing should be decently snappy. These aren't the A53 cores in your typical bargain bin phone. With that said you'll run into it's limits fairly quickly with anything more than light gaming.

I would agree an iPad is much more performant, by a very wide margin. But for the price this is fine. But make sure you know this type of device with a middling display is what you're willing settle for. Will this fit your use case better than a laptop or your current smartphone would?

      • But make sure you know this type of device with a middling display is what you're willing settle for.

Yup! The way I see it, this tablet requires some thought before buying to make sure this underpowered, average screen device is what you want.

    • +1

Aren't pretty much all modern LCDs variations of TFT? Is this a TN panel?

      • Usually when the specs specify TFT it likely isn't IPS: usually a VA or PLS panel with below average brightness.

  • Had $15 promo on my account and got this for 179. I was thinking of 128 gb but you can add sd card and I will only use this for youtube I guess. Noice

    • +1

Exactly right!! MicroSD deals on OzBargain are common too :)

  • Anyone know if you can extend your screen onto this? Considering using it as a second display for my laptop..

    • +2

      10.5 inches .
      Are u a ant ?

    • I know it's possible, I'm just not sure how well the Android implementation is for it. I do this with my iPad using an app called "Duet" and it works pretty well

    • I believe Second Screen is only available on S-Series tablets - and just the higher end ones, not the S-Lite versions.

    • I use an app called superdisplay. Works well on any Android device. Very low latency

  • +2

This is really cheap. Tab a7 was never below $200.

    • -6

i bought an A7 last year on prime day for $249
I combined with 10% off gift card and around 15% or 20% shopback cashback
so yea, it was under $200

A7 has a much better chip than A8
A8 is just awful spec due to supply chain issues.

  • Oos?
