This is one of the best prosumer coffee grinders ou can buy. Anything beyond this is exceedingly diminishing returns. Great and robust machine for the coffee hobbyist. The only way to get it cheaper is to forego local warranty and buy it at Espresso Coffee Shop

Cracking price!! My chrome from ECS is still going strong for 6 months. Love these grinders so much.

Not a deal, just buy from espresso coffee shop, current exchange rate is about $550.

I already included it in the description.
If you’re willing to forego the local warranty for a gray import, sure.
But there are many people who aren’t willing to do this. This is certainly a deal for someone who wants to buy with some more buyer protection.

  • Faark! - it's ugly.

So stop looking at the mirror

Anything beyond this is exceedingly diminishing returns.

For med to dark roasted espresso blends, perhaps. Specialty light roasts? It's an exceedingly average grinder.

  • What are the benefits with these fancy grinders compared to say a Breville grinder?

Is it simply the consistency pulls a better shot?

    • +3

I think core benefit is that you become a better person in general. Maybe it helps you feel closer to Jimmy Hoffguy spiritually. I personally just display mine in the kitchen to be seen by guest and drink 7-11 coffee when nobody's looking.

It's a grinder, and consistency is key for more 'controlled' shots. 'Better' is highly subjective.

Could have potential to bring out flavours that machines with less consistency are unable to achieve. Could also just be fun experimenting and finding new flavours. I can see how people can develop a keen sense of taste from drinking espresso using fancy grinders daily and begin to find and enjoy new flavours. However I think if other coffee starts not tasting good enough of dissatisfying then I can't see how that's a desirable trait. I think some people aspire to be the princess and the pea. My sense of taste is not great and I like being able to enjoy coffee from cheap cup of joe to specialty cafe brews. Same with a cold standard draft to a hipster craft beer.

Blind, I honestly could not tell you if a coffee was from a breville or an 'exceedingly average' mignon steak.

      • yikes! this machine costs more than my gaggia ;')

loved the sarcasm - made me lol IRL.

There’s actually quite the difference, the Breville grinder is a stepped grinder while this (if I am correct) is a step less grinder. If you’re drinking filter coffee then this would be completely irrelevant to you, the breville is perfectly fine for that.
However if you’re pulling espresso, then a stepless grinder is definitely the next step forward. It allows you to dial in a much more precise grind for your shot and in making espresso where you need an extra fine grind every bit matters. You might have 4-5 actual grind settings to work with on the breville when it comes to pulling espressos (Depending on bean and roast) while this has a variable grind setting.
The extremely frustrating thing about the breville is knowing that everything is right aside from grind setting and you’re stuck between grinds 8 and 9. At 8, the finer grind it’s slightly under extracted at the right ratio while at 9 the coarser grind you have to compensate by grinding slightly more. Yes, you can open the unit up to change the step-up gears internally until it’s finally right but imagine doing that every time you want to drink something different.
It’s not just a consistency problem, it’s also an accuracy problem.

Literally doesn’t matter if you can’t taste coffee though. Buy a breville express and forget about this.

      • Pretty sure the Smart Grinder Pro is stepless. It's fine as a start, but you need to modify for good results. It can also be a little 'clumpy'.

I upgraded from it to a Sette270 and it's much much better…although noisier

Yeah, I cannot confirm it since I only know that the Breville grinder that comes with the Barista Express is a stepped grinder (There's a clip that locks in a certain gear setting for each level of grind). However I cannot deny that the Smart grinder pro provides an incredible amount of value at its price range regardless of whether it's a stepped or stepless grinder.

      • Does it matter that much if you're mainly making lattes? i.e. does the milk hide extraction issues or is it just as noticeable?

Would really like one of these grinders but want to be sure it will be worthwhile given my coffee drinking preferences

Brilliant price for Aussie stock. Kbean are a great mob, too. Sponsors over at coffee snobs, I believe? Haven't kept up with that crew for awhile now.

    Awesome grinder

    • No, K Bean doesn’t support coffee snobs.
