  • Is the dedica worth it for just some basic espresso at home? Partner wants some iced lattes as well as regular lattes. Struggling to justify the price of a Bambino Plus or similar.

Or would I get the dedica and immediately throw it out the window.

    • I just upgraded from a Dedica to the Bambino Plus.

The quality is a big step up on the Bambino Plus over the Dedica, I think the pressure is more stable overall which results in a consistently better coffee, even using the stock pressurized baskets. The steam wand on the Dedica is a big let-down too, even if you remove the cover that's on it by default to improve performance.

Auto-milk froth on the Bambino Plus is also nice to have for family members who want to serve themselves milk-based drinks.

Although it's a fair bit more $$, I was kicking myself for not upgrading sooner, I would go the Bambino Plus.

      • Which grinder are you using?

Currently can't justify spending too much on a good grinder, bought a dose control pro for $173 new, about a week ago

So far I'm loving the bambino plus

        • I got the Breville Smart Grinder for $210 3 years ago, no complaints so far.

Before that I had the Sunbeam EM0440. I actually rated its performance, I only upgraded because it was quite messy, I didn't really notice much of an uplift in quality on the Dedica between the two grinders to be honest.

In your shoes, I wouldn't bother unless you feel there's a decent gap between coffee you've tasted at outside joints vs what you're doing at home. If your coffee tastes great, enjoy it!

Nerding out on coffee extraction can be fun, but it can also be frustrating and time consuming when you just want a good coffee without thinking too much…

          • @blazerunner: Do you remember what grind size you used with the sunbeam? I have that model, and just wasn't sure if I should keep the dose control pro or not as haven't opened it yet.

            • @TEER3X: Ooof, it's been a while since I was using the Sunbeam, can't recall sorry. It may have been 8 or so? I remember the Dedica not allowing any grinds through (even with unpressurised basket) when using the finer settings. Lots of trial and error.

Don't think I know enough about grinders or the dose control to say one way or the other. I see the Barazta encore get recommended as a more solidly built grinder for home espresso. That said, there is no limit to how much you can spend lol

The one thing you can rely on is your taste buds :)

    • Tbh I just upgraded from the aeropress to the delonghi la specialista Arte.

We had some otter brand coffee machine (¿bréville) prior to this (was wife’s machine before we met).
      Her machine did ok coffee.
      Didn’t have a grinder.
She used it in a share accom situation and thus frother didn’t work anymore.
It was manual (and at the start she thought I was an ultra clean freak as I emptied the water spill tray every morning… though it was because I want use to a Manual machine and thus overfilled my cup every time and needs to clean up after myself).

      Jokes aside..
When her machine died she wanted I new one but insisted it wasn’t Breville. She wanted a decent name brand one.
      Me… I couldn’t justify $1500 for a coffee machine over a Breville $500 one…
She insisted she wanted one with its own grinder too..
Me… i was happy at the time to buy preground or a manual grinder snd do my own (I’ve grown since)

She became pregnant. Stopped drinking coffee. I thus bought us an aeropress and manual grinder which was impressive enough at the time (still use the aeropress for travelling as beats the other options with travelling and bad coffee).

When Delonghi brought out the new slimline La Specialista Arte version and when I started seeing ozbargainers posting Delonghi Deals I started my coffee machine homework.
Went beyond the James Hoffman Reviews and yet still couldn’t fault this machine.

      End result:
      Found a good bargain
      Bought with cashback deal
Got my 3% crypto cashback with my crypto Visa card.
And now enjoying great (and I mean GREAT) coffee and reminiscing it was a bargain with every sip I took (yes… very ozbargain).

      Why I love this machine:
      It’s slimmer than most
      It’s a great price
It has a grinder that is not only quiet (possibly as it’s built in to the machine and that dampens some of the sound…)
It has a great concept grinder guide that clips onto the ‘coffee holder thingamajig’ than allows an exact measured amount of fresh ground coffee to not only be filled into the ‘thingamajig’ but reduces mess from ground coffee powder (a big thumbs up there)
This grinder guide also reduces the mess when tamping the coffee.
The espresso start button is automatic in process (chooses the steam pressure based on the grinds) which I can’t fault.
The milk steamer also has a programmed start/stop function to aid novice milk steamers like me make milk foam.
Has warning indicator lights for: low water and time to descale (I find that helpful for me).

So… not only looks like a real espresso machine but makes a novice eapresso maker like me look like a barista.
It even counteracts the ‘too tired to make a good espresso’ mode that some face early in the morning.

  • Good Grinder is important and 685 can't steam milk to save itself. However I use with Breville smart grinder and get decent shots with a third party non pressurised portafilter (I'd say that's essential) grab the Tamp as well.

I had a Eureka moment but only after I got the non pressurised portafilter and right grind for my beans. This changes every time you buy different beans…

It's not a set and forget machine but it's a budget machine you can get decent results out of if you get the right tools and techniques down. I went from this is going in the bin to I hate the machine to ok, I can make a great shot from this.

Someone said I made the greatest coffee they've ever tasted on this machine.

Now I don't think it's too bad and I won't replace it unless I'm really upgrading.

I'd recommend for basic setup but I steam milk in the microwave in a mug and finish with an IKEA milk whisk .. I don't use the machine.
