Which Mattress Brand Should I Get? Budget $500-$900

I've been sleeping on second hand mattress for the past 8 years.

Decided to spend my splurge next month to buy a mattress (queen bed) for a great night sleep. I sleep pretty well tbh, don't have much to complain, however after watching some articles that we spent 30% of our life sleeping, I think investing in a good night sleep might be good.

Budget is about $500-$900, I heard Koala is good? But other than that not sure where else to look for good mattress.

Parents got a bunch of King Koil back in my country and those were amazing. I don't think it's really popular here in Oz though.

Any recommendations?

Whatever you buy try and then buy.

Also bought a mattress because it was soft. Sleeping wise is ok but having sex is terrible. No stability at all. Frustrating!

      username checks out.

Our memory foam mattress from Sleep Republic is terrific to sleep on.. and for other activities. No sag on corners or pressure points

    • Maybe try new positions?

  • Choice article talks about brands just manufacturing same thing with different model names (for different retailers) to avoid having to price match. They were also able to negotiate big discounts. I'd suggest to go to Harvey Normans and try mattresses you like. Then off to other nearest place to give that a try then try to find best price / negotiate for the brand / range.

What's 'good' for someone else may not be 'good' for you.

Best thing to do is try it out for yourself.

    • The only place i find to try mattress right now is either ikea or harvey norman though. They don't have koala as well i think so its limited to the brand that they have

      • +1

Go to IKEA, test out the firmness levels to find the one you like and get a nice thick mattress topper (not mattress protector).

        • yeah that's true, I might go to ikea and harvey by the end of the week

      • koala sells their own brand, they do not allow anyone else to sell it.

      • They don't have koala as well i think

These "bed in a box" mattresses tend to have a certain number of day guarantees where, if you're not happy with it, they'll come collect it and give you a refund.

I got a Tempur mattress not that long ago and it's bloody comfortable for me to sleep on, but it gets quite hot in summer. Other people seem to be perfectly fine with it.

        • I saw that. Just wished they're somewhere in store so I don't have to pack and send back if i don't like lol. mattress is huge and requires time to setup!

No choice i guess, i'll go to what's available in ikea and HN first before even considering koala

@robertwt7: Honestly, testing by sleeping on it is much better than in store. That said, we bought a sleeping duck, and it is brilliant. It took a while for it to soften, but we'll worth it, especially after mattresses costing 2x to 3x as much previously

  • Which Mattress Brand Should I Get?

    1) Visit few mattress shops, HN, fortywinks etc
    2) Try out few mattresses
    3) Find the one with the biggest discount by percentage (you will feel less guilty and sleep better) and buy that.
    4) Ask for more discount, if they say, NO. Tell them who you kidding, you guys always on sale.

  • Koala usually give you a free 90 day no nonsense money back trial which is pretty reasonable.

I believe that sleeping duck do something similar too but you'd have to check that out?

Trying something like this out for a select period of time is much better than a quick lie down in a store… and says to me that they must have huge confidence in their product.

  • We had been to a lot of motels in many countries.
If you travel hard, good sleep becomes even more important.
Generally if 2 are in the same bed they both need to remain undisturbed.
Staying in 3 and 4 star hotels we found Chinese hotels offers perhaps the best sleep quality.
Innerspring are out for 2. Unless you had grown up on top of a spring.
In France we prefer firm beds. Strangely the cheaper 1 star hotels give us better sleep than the 3 or 4 star ones.
If you spend 500 to 900 it would be a good investment to try before you buy.

I will always pull up the sheets in the motel if the bed is good

King coil is pretty good as OP mentioned but they are not in that price range.

  • Love the request for recommendations and the responses so far are like "I only care about Koala". If you want a Koala call them.

Many mattress in a box companies have a generous returns policy that allows you to try it out for 2 or three months and if you don't like it you can always return it with no extra charge.

    Emma = 100 nights
    Koala = 120 nights
    Eva = 120 nights
Regal Sleep solutions = 120 nights

I had a regal sleep mattress, back support series. Okay for 3 years but it started to sag, so I swapped it out for Emma mattress, which is much more firmer and supportive.

    • Ill add my SleepRepublic to your list of MINB since you started it.

      SR 100 night trial/return window.

We bought ours on the onus of trying a few but after the first few sleeps, we liked it it so kept it. That was a year ago and so far so good. Its got a memory foam topper as per most MINB's no sagging yet on either of our 'sides' nor in the middle. The mattress is pretty thicc though and quite heavy, mrs does struggle to change the sheets cause of this. Also means make sure you have someone helping if you buy a MIAB as looks can be deceiving and lugging it up stairs and unpacking wasnt fun at all despite all these vids showing otherwise

RRP was $1249, but was $1099 by use of coupon that we got off some mattress review site.

      Hope this helps

      • Great. 560 nights of free beds.

mattress is not that easy to return though. it'll be super time consuming to unpack, put sheets, use, pack post.. it's heavy lol

        • +1

In most areas of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide, they will pick your return up for free as part of the 120 night trial. Otherwise, they will get you to bring it back to your nearest Koala Warehouse. Reach out to their team for more info to see what would be applicable in your area so you can assess suitability.

A.H. Beard manufactures King Koil in Australia.
If you're in Sydney, there is a warehouse/showroom in Rhodes that sell beds at your price range and these brands are Sealy, A.H. Beard, etc. I am sleeping on a A.H. Beard mattress for 4-5 years, still springy and comfortable.

  • Bought a onebed mattress (same as koala)
First night sleeping on it … fck this is hard
Second night after moving some layers around.. fck this is firm..

Going to give it a month and see how it goes
    5”7 80kg if it helps

    • Our sleeping duck softened a lot over the first few weeks. Still great, just needed to settle. It's held up well over the last few years since

    • We had a similar issue and were going to return it but were advised to lay it on the floor and walk all over it to break down the fibres by one of the customer service people lol it actually worked really well and they extended the trial period but it's been great ever since. Ours is a tontine memory foam mattress though, onebed was going to be next after trying out a few that weren't great.
Throw an old mattress protector on it and get the kids to jump/walk on it.

  • ZZZ Artelier

  • Check out bev Mark's range when they have their 50% off sale. They are quite good quality for the price. Depending on size, they range in price from about 600-800 with the 50% off. The only caveat is they dont tend to hold stock in store so you will either need to pay the 80 delivery or pickup from hallam. We have bought 4 mattresses from them. Happy with all of them.

  • We bought from Ergoflex a couple of years back and really worried about buying a mattress without first trying it out.
In the end, we decided that a 5 minute lay down in a shop was not really 'trying it out' anyway and seeing as Ergoflex had a 30 day free return period we would give it a try.
I have to say it has been the best mattress that both my wife and I have slept on.
Being memory foam means that she doesn't bounce every time that I go through my nighttime toss and turn.
Ergoflex seem to have a permanent sale/code on offer (at the moment it is TAKE30).

A few people I know bought mattresses from Sleeping Duck and they are really pleased with them. Choice ranked SD mattresses #1 for a couple of years recently. Not the cheapest, but the best full refund, no questions asked policy that I’ve seen if you don’t like it after sleeping on it for three months.

    • I saw some people recommending this too, very expensive! but looking really good.. wonder if they have one to try somewhere

      • I believe they used to have a showroom in Melb but not anymore. But they have a trial period so you can try at home and return if not satisfied. (Same with many bed in box retailers, just be careful to check T&C to ensure they will collect from your area. Some, like Koala, expect you to send it back to them if you're not in a major city.)

  • If you're near a Freedom store, you could check out their mattresses as they currently have up to 50% off (+ free home delivery was offered on the weekend). They come in firm $, medium $$ or plush $$$. They do have a 120 night return policy but you need to purchase their $70 mattress protector for the trial (bit of a sting).

  • Just get a good quality topper. They make almost any bed comfortable.
