  • Has anyone considered if they have more cloud based stuff one of these style chromebooks for dev? any good?

    • +1

      What?!

    • The mobile chipset and slow emmc based storage make it painful to use for any sort of serious work. These are just an iPad replacement for surfing the web.

      • Depends what kind of dev you wanna do. I use an old higher-end HP Chromebook for all my web dev work, plus two external screens. Runs VSCode just fine and my Nodejs projects are easy to get up and running. Happy with the setup.

Video and image editing are probably the main things you'd want to avoid though.

        • If you get a higher end Chromebook with Intel core processor and SSD instead of emmc there are ways to install a Linux root environment on it and do some dev work but the one in this deal is definitely not ideal for it.

    Omg must resist…..

Fwiw, Jbhifi look to be pricematching it now:
    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/lenovo-duet-5-13-3-full-h…

    • +3

This is only 4GB and no USI pen.

  • aside from the operating system, would this a huge upgrade from samsung tab galaxy S4 ? (for media compsumptions)

    • for the hardware…not really,
and also the biggest downside would be the operating system.

      • Screen wise? Thr tab is 10.5" this is better but less portable..

        • +1

Hi, I own the tab s4 and lenovo duet (the 10.1 version) and I can assure you that the screen on tab s4 is a lot better than the Duet. It’s sharper, more PPI, also 4 speakers on Tab S4 are much louder than the Duet.
I sold my Duet last year due to ChromeOS limitation in almost everything, but you can easily run Android apps on this.

But if the bigger screen matter to you, then go for Duet.

          • @AnKu: @AnKu thanks. Yes agree s4 is better than old duet but i wondering if this new duet 5 is better than s4. Probably not.

        • +1

Tab S4 got better screen and this one got better screen size.

  • Tempted to sell my 10.1" duet and buy this, wonder if the double ram is much noticeable?

    • +2

      Aaaaand it's gone.

      • +1

        I also thought too long.

        • officeworks still in stock :)

          • @Postal Dude: Going to stick with the 10.1 inch Duet. Best for my use case. And <$250.

    • Yes. The double ram is a huge difference.

      • no, with chrome OS ram won't be the game changer.
its running simulations for android apps, so most of the apps requested to run at the background won't work.
becoz of that u ar not doing much of multitasking, u need much less ram then the andriod system.

        • +1

Have to disagree. I have had a 4GB and 8GB Chromebook. There is a huge difference. I am talking mainly chrome apps and native apps, not necessarily Android apps (although I run those as well).

          • -1

@boxall: you don't know what you talking about,
besides the pre-loaded, there is no native apps designed for chrome os,all you could get ar some so called apps but just add-ons for the chrome ie.
other actual apps u could install ar android/java apps, u run it through the android/java simulators.

            For the performance,
let me put it this way, the android version of WeChat took over 1 GB of ur storage and 500-800mb of ram running at the background.
with chrome apps i could hardly think of any need more then 20mb of ur storage space and over 20 mb of the ram.
since u couldn't run apps like WeChat on the simulators and no large consumption of any chrome apps, 4GB and 8GB won't make a "huge" difference.
so if u could tell the differences, most likely ar the processors not the ram.

another reason for why u could get away with less ram is ChromeOS don't run android apps on startup, so u could free up most of ur ram but spend 10 seconds to restart the device.

  • This or Tab S7 FE?

    • Tab S7 is much more premium product

      • Not the S7 FE

  • Way to make me feel less good about the deal I thought I got on this last week xD

  • Good price for a good product. I wonder why Chromebook duet price went down so quickly. I remember Duet 10.1" released at $699 then become less than $300 when on sale within a year. Now Duet 5 that was released at $999 has gone down to $559 within half year.

    • +1

Lowest the Duet 10.1 went was $265 shipped from Amazon :)

    • +2

Price in Aus was a massive jack on USA prices, more than usual Aus Tax. Guessing they had a lot of Profit in RRP here

    • It was an artificial price, like Coles so they can go on sale.

  • Price is now up 641

    • +1

Thanks, how did officeworks price match them so fast lol.

      • +2

I guess as soon as 1 person (5 persons?) rings to price match and is (are) successful OW changes its price.

    • FML i picked up one today from OfficeWorks for over $700

      • If you didn't mind going back and ask them to refund and buy again. I'm sure they'll understand

        • Too late $697 at OW now.

    • It's $897 but OOS anyway.

  • +1

I was feeling a little disappointed that I missed this deal and then saw the screen resolution. The 'affordable' price makes sense now.

It'd be good to see one in the flesh though. I would really like to switch from my iPad Air to an OLED screen in the future.

    • +3

Still, this is a full hd oled screen with keyboard and stylus and apps and desktop browser - the value proposition of this compared to iPad is pretty amazing

  • Just bought one from OW. click and collect at my local store estimated 28/3.

    • Mine says collection today.

      • My local has no stock.

        • Mine now says delayed.

          • @jamba: Mine is ready for pickup

  • Going to be traveling with the family a lot next year. I'm looking to get a decent gaming laptop for myself. Would something like this be suitable for the wife and kids to bash around on, watch Netflix/prime video, YouTube etc? Or go for a second hand iPad or Samsung tablet?

    • Perfect tablet for videos imo, 16:9 utilises the screen perfectly for most media. Plus it's the biggest OLED screen you'll get for under a grand.

Speakers are a little lacking compared to other tablets but a bt speaker can solve that.

    • Perfect for what you’re after.

  • Would love some feedback on the included pen. The "standard" Lenovo pen was a complete piece of cr@p. So many issues with it. Went 80% of the way to doing a return to Lenovo and figured it wasn't worth any more of my time. Purchased an Alogic for $59 that's worked fine since day 1. Would love to know if it's the same pen as you can buy separately and if they've fixed it.

    Tempted to buy, but a Lenovo C340 (N4000, 4GB,64GB), a Duet 10.1 (MT8183,4GB, 128G) and a Flex 5 (i3, 4GB,64GB) kinda makes it hard to justify another Chromebook at this time :P

    • +1

      hard to justify?
hey, but it's 8GB RAM, and none of your other chromebooks have that :)

  • I like my old Duet most of the time. Sometimes it very snappy and sometimes YouTube takes minutes to load.

  • +1

Damn, just bought the 4gb 128 version from JB last week, kicking myself now :(

    • same boat here, you are not alone

    • I just picked up the 8GB from OfficeWorks at 5pm this afternoon for $697, next second they are doing same machine for $559

  • -2

    Its back in stock!

Similar offer for those who missed the above.

    • $557 for 4gb RAM, $559 for 8gb RAM 😂

      Good pricematch though.

      • $0.50 per GB.

  • -2

Good to see the savings on these are coming to aus. These were selling for less than $400 USD when it released in the states

    • I have relatives came from US to visit my family 5 years ago and asked why the Australian grown apples exported to and sold in US were cheaper than the Australian grown apples sold in Australia when they saw the prices at Woolworths and Coles.

      • Dumping as the export is.subsidised

    • Maybe for the base model.

This is 8GB/256GB and the pen.

      • Nope 8gb model

        No pen though

Edit: just noticed their 8gb also comes in 128gb storage

        • So, no pen and only 128GB storage for under $400 US on a president day $100 off special.

Not quite the same as this deal.

  • Will this Chromebook work with a TV tuner?

  • Can you access the entire google playstore on this device.

    • Yes, just not all apps working properly,
u could still install them but bugs everywhere and some won't even run.

      • There is an exploit to put it into recovery and then you can sideload apps. I am trying to find the tutorial.

        • its running in a simulator for all the android apps, even if u could load it up, u still got troubles.
          here is an example
the ChromeOS and android simulator have different directories for their files,
and they can not see each others' directory.
meaning when you download a file from the cloud or even use a usb stick to transfer a file to the tablet, most of the android apps can't even see it, in my experience only 2/13 ebook reader apps could access the ChromeOS directory.
in most of the cases you have to use a file explorer app to transfer it first, also in my experience "CX file explorer" is the only app i found is working.
same thing happened when you creat a file from an andriod app, if u want to upload it to the cloud or put it into the usb stick, u have to transfer it first.

            • @jamba: ya, i knew that.
unlike the android OS, chrome OS will format ur device and u will lost all ur data when u swtich the developer mode on or off !
since u won't able to upgrade the system under developer mode, evey time u want to upgrade ur device u lost everything.

By turning on the developer mode u could install apk apps outside of the playstore, but the directory thing i have mentioned still won't work, so there is not much of point of switching it on…

              • @samelight: So basically it's best practice to sideload apps without developer mode.
