Wait so this is just to dispose of used coffee grinds? Why not just pop the bin open and throw em in? Never knew this needed a specific container…

    • +7

Usually less messy when making multiple coffees to dump them in one of these before dripping coffee across the floor to your bin.

Also, used coffee grounds are great for the garden.

    • +9

You need to knock the used coffee puck out of the group head, that's what the middle bar is for.
I prefer the Gridenstein which fits better on smaller counter tops - used mine for 8 years and still looks relatively new and functionally flawless.

      • +2

I'm only new to coffee machines, but I don't think you should be knocking your group head! You mean portafilter or basket?

        • -2

the rubber on the bar eventually wears through and you end up banging the group head against a steel bar unless you replace the rubber …..other option is use the handle end of a spoon to remove the puck …… i used to have one made from 100mm waste water pipe but got a proper one as the commercial ones have a rubber base to stop them sliding around ……. it’s a convenience thing if you don’t want to remove the puck with a spoon handle into the organic bin.

          • +2

@garage sale: Please stop right there. Grouphead is not what you think it is… grouphead is the fixed bit on the coffee machine which the portafilter locks into, not any part of portafilter

          • @garage sale: I've had this exact same Sunbeam Knock-box for 15 years (yes, fifteen years). I make 3 coffees a day. The rubber is as good as the day I bought it. There is a wooden stick inside that's also in as-new condition.

IF Sunbeam has maintained quality for all those years, then, this is an amazing deal for an amazing Knock-box.

        • +1

Not sure why you're being downvoted. Group head is part of the coffee machine that you attach the portafilter to. If you're banging the group head against the knock box, you're doing it wrong…

    • +10

Good questions spaceman… Really it's just a little bin that goes next to your coffee machine… But a very expensive little bin!

(Don't say it too loudly in front of coffee fans though)

    • -1

Yea we just empty it into the normal bin. Not really necessary…

    • +22

If you make coffee properly, the coffee grounds are tamped (compressed) into the head so the water can pass through it under pressure, to extract that coffee goodness. What you're left with is a puck of grounds which are tightly packed into the receiver head. It requires percussive persuasion to detach itself from the receiver. That's why the unit has that cross bar — something to smack it against. If you do it on the side of your countertop or an appliance, you will quickly cause damage.

The value of the unit is it is able to withstand all the knocking, it's not just an expensive, pretty container for collecting the waste. And yes, it does need to be emptied out regularly.

      • +24

Or just stick a teaspoon in there, avoiding any "percussive persuasion" whilst saving $30? Lol

        • +6

          Haha 😂

I also use a wooden teaspoon and just scoop out. Never fails.

        • +5

          Teaspoon is what we do!

        • would you recommend tip head, or flat head?
looking for 3 other people to split the cost on this https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/124813456225

          • +3

@DONMAI: Just use your finger, then rinse the portafilter under the tap. It's just coffee not nuclear waste.

        • +1

The other thing with percussive persuasion and general wear and tear removing the basket is that over time the basket will get lose. I use my machine 5 days a week and now trying to knock the puck out usually sees the basket come out. I need to realign the spring to fix it (I think)

I’m using the teaspoon or butter knife method.

In all honesty if you work in a cafe these are great but for home usage it’s a waste in my opinion

        • I have the knockbox because it came with my coffee machine. If I didn't have it I would definitely do this instead of buying one.

It might be convenient if you made multiple coffees at a time regularly.

      • +1

Am I doing my coffee wrong? My used coffee comes out with just the action of knocking (not actual knocking) in the coffee. There is obvious bit of residue but most of it comes out with that jerk reaction. I am a newness By the way

        • If it is compressed enough it should come out as a single firm tablet, and should require a bit of encouragement to get it out. It shouldn't just fall out. If it comes out in pieces or as a watery mess, it wasn't compressed sufficiently in the first place. The idea is to prevent channeling. You want the water to flow equally through the entire puck and extract the identical amount of coffee at any point in the basket. If it isn't tight enough you will get channeling, where the water has a path to flow around the side of the puck or through soft areas like a worm hole, bypassing the extraction process. This ends up with watery coffee and generally under-extracted, leaving behind much of the good oils/crema/flavours. There are many good videos on YouTube explaining this.

          • +1

@endotherm: Cheers mate! Mine comes out like a tablet, and very small residue is stuck in. It does need a strong shake to come out, but I don't need to knock or bang it. May be I am giving it a very strong shake. Thanks for that. I will check the Vids

            • +1

@akstatic: As Endotherm said - if it comes out battery you didn't tamp it enough. The flip side is that if it is really jammed in there and takes ages to get out you have over tamped it.

By the sounds of what you've written, you're probably doing it okay if there is only a small amount of residue

        • +1

I’m with you. I also get mine out by shaking it out of the portafilter. Comes out as a single tablet with little to no residue, and the pressure during extraction is within normal range.
I used a knock-box initially when I got my machine for a bit, but it was just another thing to keep cleaning (mould grows if you don’t clean it often) and took space on my small countertop.
I prefer not to spend time maintaining something else and just get it out straight into the normal bin, but I guess it is great for people that use the residue for the garden.

      • The value of the unit is it is able to withstand all the knocking, it's not just an expensive, pretty container for collecting the waste. And yes, it does need to be emptied out regularly.

It's expensive for a box with a rubber bar that you can't even chuck in the dishwasher.
There's plenty of room in-between this product/price and having to dig out the grounds with anything. The Avanti deal recently for example.

    • +1

You obviously have never made a coffee with an espresso machine

    • +1

Never knew you needed a specific container?

Well, no you don't really 'need' a knock box at all.

It's just makes the whole process of getting rid of the grinds and preparing your portafilter for your next cup a hell of a lot easier.

And this one happens to do the job brilliantly - and at a great price in this deal. And I reckon it's a heck more convenient than the smaller plastic ones like the Grindenstein for those who love their coffee because it is sturdier and holds more pucks meaning less trips to the bin or compost heap. Simply a matter of choice.

But if it's just you and your bin and a draw full of teaspoons sitting alone in your kitchen preparing just one espresso a day - nope, absolutely not needed.

    • +6

Because you have a lot of disposable income and need to show it

      • +1

        Triggered?

      • No, that's the Aldi chandelier hanging in the toilet. This is a meaningful quality of coffee life improvement

    • every cafe has one

  • -5

Brought one, then found it is useless. Plus, the wasted bean inside smells later on. DON’T buy it.

    • +3

You're supposed to empty it occasionally…

    • Rubish bin or even a plastic bag will do the job, just use your temper to knock them off by hitting the side of yr handel. That's it. Save your money and space and effort also. DON't BUY IT.

  • +2

Not a fan of knock box, but if you must have one, this is one of the better ones. Friends have it, it's very solid.

  • -7

while not eco planet safe, can get 100 baby bags for like $2.5 at aldi
Can just throw a bag away every 2-4 days

    • +3

That's just a tragic waste of plastic. Christ just use a Tupperware container.

    • +1

take the spoon and scoop it ://

  • +1

If you don't care about style you can DIY a knock box with a plastic container, short wooden rod or dowel, and a bit of rubber strip for padding for good measure. I made one with those 3 things all bought from Daiso :P

If you really want to do it on the cheap I used to use at work an old chocolate powder tin with slats cut in for a bunch of coffee stirrer/icypole sticks sticks to sit across it.

Couldn't tap it over the bin directly because the inner basket would usually pop out instead.

    • Don't bother. Check out my comment above.

  • +6

If you have a proper machine and grinder and use fresh beans you need something like this. A properly tamped and filled portafilter wont discharge the puck easily. If you make runny swill with your machine then sure the puck will fall out no probs. Basically if you think you don't need one then you probably don't.

    • +3

Teaspoon digs it out pretty easily

      • -1

yeah, definitely. You'll only need this bin if you're making hundreds of cups a day.

        • Not sure why you're being downvoted mate. We probably have 4-6 coffees per day in the house and yea completely unnecessary.

  • +1

I have no need for one, but if it were called the Emo 1000, I probably couldn't resist

  • I've got this, very solid - no complaints. It's not the smallest footprint though.

  • +1

Dunno how often you’re supposed to empty these out, but mine lost all the paint on the bottom, presumably from the grinds sitting in there too long.

Also the basket kept falling out when knocking.

These days just use teaspoon into a stainless steel bowl then into the garden when I have time..

    • My pucks develop mould long before they eat away at paint. How long do you leave them for?

  • I use a bunnings 11L pail (I guess depending how much coffee you go through, use either the 2L or 5L, but I'm an unashamed addict) and line it with a compostable bin bag. Much cheaper and more effective open because it actually air tight seals to prevent fruit flies.

They are study enough to knock the puck into

    • +2

Piece of Bunnings 90mm sewer pipe, cap the bottom, cut top on an angle. Drill hole through one side and out the other at the top. Slide in a smaller piece of 25mm pvc pipe and cap those ends.

      • I'd use a piece of dowel like a broomstick for the cross-bar. It would be firmer and not flex as much as the conduit.

  • +1

remember, you can't buy knock-boxes at a knock shops

  • Been this price for a while, not a small one, so if you're after a smaller unit check eBay. Otherwise this is easily the best bang for the buck

    • +1

~ Same price gets you a Grindenstein - I prefer it to the Sumbean and Breville as the cross bar really damps the percussive noise of the tamp.

However +10 for the use case of a knock box. The pucks from our BES920 are well embedded, and a good interim storage area before going into the worm bucket or compost.

  • +1

I just use an empty 2L icecream container that I use for the worm farm. I keep it in the fridge normally.

  • Also listed at EBay for the same price. And there is a $5 voucher for whatever reason so paid $23 only.

  • i had an expensive set when i first got my machine. its just a waste of time and money. i knock it straight into my garbage can now. i make 2 cups in the morning, 2 mid day, and maybe 3 in the afternoon. it fills up fast. i hated to constantly keep dumping it. so skipped that step and knocked it straight into the bin where its going to go anyways, lol. does look good next to my espresso machine, but i no longer use mine.

    • 7 cups of coffee in a day! I think you might be just a tad addicted!

      • lol, its for 2 people.

        • fair enough

  • you use a knock box, yoghurt container or a teaspoon, make sure you empty you basket before rinsing… coffee grounds are heavier than water an wont easily flush in your drain. it can sink to the bottom of you pipe and cause blockage

  • -5

Just switch to drinking tea. It always consistently tastes good without needing a two grand coffee machine and a $28 fancy bin.

    • My espresso machine: $39 with steam wand
      My bin: usual garbage bin

Tea is a bit too manual for such consistency, and getting tea out rarely tastes good. Coffee on the other hand the only human error that can occur is over frothing milk.

      • Coffee on the other hand the only human error that can occur is over frothing milk.

Yeah nah way more variables than that that we can control

        • You can control a lot more variables, but if you are after consistency as OP mentioned you can control everything else. You just can't do that with tea.

  • Have one. Solid heavy construction, highly recommended.

I mean sure u can scoop it out with a spoon and what ever but a knock bin makes it so much easier and quicker!

  • Got one free with my coffee machine

  • I had one, not great. One more thing to empty and wash

  • -2

Just drink water and stop being addicted to stimulants

    • +3

      Thanks, changed my life!
After reading this comment I threw away my coffee machine, all my prescription medications and any food and drinks containing sugar. Didn't want to risk any buzz!

I now only drink water. Wish me luck!

      • Good luck :)

      • Goodluck and welcome to the superhuman club! =P

  • +2

Used coffee grounds are not good for your garden. They contain a growth inhibition compound to stop competing plants in their feeding zone. Composting first is the way to go

Will this work with international roast?

  • Highly rated by nucktards.

This coffee shit is the death of Australia.

But you can build an economy on Digging shit up, getting more Doctors and Accountants in and selling coffe they say.

    • considering how much a cup of coffee costs in melbourne cbd or beachside cafe, and the amount of landfill from non-recycled coffee cups it does get a bit crazy …. i. have my coffee at home ….hate paying $4 for a cup at work ….working from home has definitely cut back on my costs as now it’s $20 kg for coffee and the cost of milk ……

  • +1

From what I can tell, this is the same product for $11:

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/691010

  • I thought this was a slap chop

  • Aldi sells these every now and then for $30 if you don't want to get Prime.
