Google one is cheaper (and better), $188 is 9.5 years of Google one 100gb.
Also, 50gb is nothing, i am on 200gb plan and soon have to upgrade because it's almost full (have been backing up pictures for many years already )

      • +8

Thats what my initial thought was. But me and my partner filled up 18GB in just a few weeks. Google One 100GB is $25/year I believe but I'm sure we'll have to upgrade to higher tier in a few months. Specially if I'll also use it to upload shots from GoPro, DJI drone and DSLR. I'd rather do a one time investment than paying and yearly subscription. I wish they continued unlimited photos on current and future Pixel phones - I wouldnt even mind storage saver instead of original but unfortunate that this is not happening.

        PS: I'm not negging.

        • +2

          NAS + SyncThing?

          • @Zorlin: Not sure how that works. I still want to stay connected with Google ecosystem, at least for the photos.

            • @ar7ist: Yeah, fair enough. It's more complicated than Google Photos, but if you take a ton of photos might make sense, since you can get an 8TB drive for ~$200 and have storage for 5+ years.

              • @Zorlin: I have my own external hard drives for backup, but I'm also paying the $25pa for Google One 100GB or whatever mainly so I can share photos or videos of projects via email where the large file size (e.g. >5MB or 20MB) would be problematic to send via email.

          • @Zorlin: Why not both? Remember, if your only backups are in the one location, you don't have a backup.

I have a Pixel 1 used specifically to upload to Google Photos. I also have a NAS that everything gets backed up to. I didn't bother using SyncThing, I just do once a week or so manual copy paste from my NAS to the Pixel 1 via USB. Takes 2 minutes and means the Pixel is only on for like 10 minutes a week, which should go a long way towards keeping it working for as long as possible.

        • How do you upload GoPro, DJI drone and DSLR (in PC) to unlimited Google account through P1? Still through Syncthing app?

          • +2

@jassssone: I just started uploading all my footage to youtube. Free storage.

        • I use another app called Foldersync and using SMB/CIF/Windows Share to communicate to a NAS Share. I copy all my photos into here and use Foldersync to grab the pictures back to my Pixel for upload. I set it to happen every night for my phones/devices to copy to the NAS. The Pixel will then pick this up in the morning.

Since it is on a NAS share, you can use your PC to copy the GoPro/DJI/DSLR/Scans stuff onto that share directly too and it will sync it up.

Foldersync: (Paid app, but worth the few bucks!)
          https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dk.tacit.andro…

Too bad I already bought the Pixel 3 previously for this task. This one would be a better deal given it has original size uploads too.

      • An 8TB archive drive for 10+years is only $199: https://www.amazon.com.au/Seagate-Barracuda-Internal-Hard-Dr…

        • +1

You gonna carry the 8TB hard drive with you everywhere you go so that you can access the photos/videos on demand?

          • @bchliu: Nah, PLEX on a NAS open to Internet, it aint rocket surgery :P

            • +1

@7ekn00: I'm sure the bots out there love your opened port. Lol.

              • @bchliu: No issues in 15 year ;)
Open ports are no different to bots that scan online sites for access …
In fact, more documented leaks from "cloud storage" then there are from "home media servers"!!
When was the last FAPENING leaks from iCloud vs all those from "Home Media Servers"?!? ROFL

                • +2

@7ekn00: I just put a naked photo of myself as the first file in each folder so that no-one will want to steal my files…

      🤦‍♂️

    • +4

Don't know about you but that would only be a years worth of photos for me

    • -1

I have 6TB storage for free as part of my O365 subscription too - comes with licences for Office for 6 people and all.

      Moot comparison.

      • How much does that cost usually or so far

        • +1

Depends - whether you want to legitimately pay for an Office licence or not. Education licences are still relatively cheap. Even the "Home" licence for 6 people is only $90-$100 or so depending on specials at the time. That's $16 per year per person - which is STILL cheaper than iCloud, Google One, Dropbox, AWS, <name your cloud provider>. PLUS multiple legit Office licence for everyone.

Only bad thing about Onedrive is: The photo capabilities suck on it. Nowhere near as flexible as Google Photos with searches, auto meta tagging etc. That's why I still prefer Google Photos enough to have bought the Pixel 3 last time.

Not sure why who'd downvote me - but hey, do the math and if you have enough people to share it with (6 people), much better deal than any of the so-called alternatives like (LOL) Apple Cloud with 50GB.

          • @bchliu: So I'm guessing that's 6 TB shared amongst the 6 people so technically $16 per person per year for 1 TB or is that 6 TB per person so hypothetically 36 TB total storage space?

            • @AlienC: 1TB per person (or 6TB total between all the people). Considering Google One is 100GB for $25 a year. iCloud is $4.50 per month for 200GB ($30 a year). Plus access to the Office Apps for PC/Apple/Android/iOS.

              No brainer really.

              • @bchliu: Yeah wow that is great value plus you get access to office suite I presume. Nice nice.

      • -1

No you have 1TB per person. Not really the same thing. That's like just making 6 different google accounts to get 6x15GB free.

        • -1

Point is: Nothing out there beats this current pricing for 1TB of storage. The same money per year out of Google and Apple gives you 50GB and no licences for Office or anything out there.

          • -1

            @bchliu: 2TB of Google One is $124.99 a year (https://one.google.com/about/plans)

            1TB of Office 365 is $129.00 a year RRP (https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/microsoft-365/buy/compare-al…)

I'd say that would make Google One the better deal if you're simply buying it for the storage.

            • -1

@MrFunSocks: Lol. You pay RRP for Office? I think the mods need to remove your login to OZB then. hahaha

Did you NOT read my original post about 6 user licence for the Home edition?

              https://www.saveonit.com.au/product/microsoft-office-365-fam…

$98 for 6 licences. For one year.

That's cheaper than your single user 2TB Google one licence.. Yeah, 1TB vs 2TB - but you have Office included for 6 people supplied on all their PCs and mobile / tablets - 1TB each.

Before you ask - SaveonIT is a legit company. They sell tons of hardware, software and a supplier to various small to medium sized offices.

Even the "RRP" of this directly from MS is only $129 a year. Still better value than Google One.. LOL.

              • -1

@bchliu: I pay RRP for Office because I've just got it on auto renew and I don't care enough to manually do it to save $20 a year. My time is worth more than that, especially since I can't guarantee that the key won't be a dodgily acquired one and get my account permabanned.

I read your original post about it being a 6 user license and I replied, but I'll do say the same thing again here - 6 users getting 1TB isn't the same as 1 user having 6TB. You can't have more than 1 TB stored in your account.

I know the "RRP" is $129 a year…………..that's literally what I wrote it as and linked to the official page in my post you're replying to lol.

Saying you get 6TB of storage with Office 365 is disingenuous at best. You'll have to be constantly switching accounts to retrieve certain data, and when you are full on all 6 accounts, then what?

Like I said - if you only care about the storage, Google One is the better option.

                • -1

@MrFunSocks: There's nothing disingenuous about using all 6TB by creating 6 MS accounts to use 1TB each out of it for different purposes. You subscribed to those rights of 6 users - not necessarily meaning it is 6 people using those accounts. Nothing stopping you from using one account to save pictures, while another could be for home, or another to save your videos and another for work purposes. Nothing in the T&Cs stop you from doing this at all.

What are you saying about "Key won't be dodgily acquired"? It's a legitimate company that I am purchasing from - even Bing Lee can have these on sale for under $100. You're just making sh!t up at this point. MS prepaid Licences are stackable for up to 3 years, so you don't need to "renew every year" as you think.

I'll leave this here and honestly can't be bothered wasting my time on your BS.

                  • @bchliu: I didn't say nothings stopping you doing it, I said it's just stupid because you're constantly having to switch accounts to upload/download different things. What do you do when your 1TB for videos is now full? Now you have to put some videos in your work account. You gonna keep a spreadsheet of where everything is?

You can do it, it's just ridiculous and not at all what people want. In that same vein you could just keep creating endless Google accounts and get 15GB free on every one. Unlimited storage for free, Google wins!

What are you saying about "Key won't be dodgily acquired"? It's a legitimate company that I am purchasing from - even Bing Lee can have these on sale for under $100.

They could be dodgily acquired because you have no idea where they're getting them from. I bet you also believe the people selling "legit" windows licenses on reddit for $10 are legit.

Like I said, my time is worth more than the time it takes me to find a potentially dubious license to save $20 a year.

Enjoy having to micromanage your half a dozen microsoft accounts lol

            • @MrFunSocks: Seems awfully expensive.
I pay $16.99 USD for 1TB storage / year, and I thought that was a rip.

  • +1

Yes this is the way to go
Tho u can get it cheaper on FB marketplace.

Does anyone know of a way to remove FRP from a pixel?
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/115301239140?hash=item1ad87d4964…

    • +2

True, cheaper on marketplace but I prefer getting a brandnew from a reputable company. I don't even know how they would still have a brandnew Google Pixel since they have not been manufactured for years now.

      • +3

Reputable company? I bought a Xiaomi from them January last year, it started giving me issues, couldnt get hold of them, number of emails, phone calls unanswered. Never buying from them again

      • +9

did you just call Mobileciti a reputable company? it's anything but that lol

        • we got excellent service when we bought a new iPhone from Mobileciti Parramatta store - but that was over 6 years ago so of course it may have changed

        • They have a real shopfront and legitimate company. You might argue against some of their practices previously on customer service etc. But at least they're bricks and mortar.

    • +16

phone is "ACCOUNT LOCKED" history unknown

      stolen, in other words

      • Yep, stolen for sure.

Literally no way around that as that's the whole point - to stop people from stealing them.

  • +9

Imagine paying the apple tax and then still having to get an android

    • +2

I'm on Google Pixel 4a - enjoying the storage saver for now. Its hard to convince my partner to make the switch to Android, so I'm glad I was able to find an alternative for her + myself for when Google stops supporting storage saver for Pixel 4a.

      • The Pixel 4a never loses storage saver. No pixels ever lose their unlimited free google photos that they came with.

      • +15

Oh, my mistake. I thought they were good as phones, which is how I've been using them for… well, 12 years now?

          • +6

@dylanando: I guess I'll be sad forever now, since I can't afford iPhones, poor schmuck I am.

    • I avoided the apple tax by buying a 2nd hand iPhone 8 for $200 a year ago. Still going strong and still supported. Takes great photos and videos. By the way, the current iPhone SE and iPhone 13 mini seem like pretty good phones for the price if you like small phones, which I do. Flagship specs without the flagship price. May get one if upgrade in future. Either that or pixel 6 for the camera.

    • LOL, the mythical "Apple tax."

      PS I'm an Android user.

  • +2

Got this from FB for $99, but lots of hardware issues, but still worth the price,
purchased this again so I can sell of the old one now, Thx op

  • +1

The 32GB of storage on the phone (likely half after OS?) would be hard to manage.
I've got a pixel 2 and have been backing up via cable to storage saver - good to know about the Syncthing app.
    Thanks OP

    • +1

You backup then use the free up space option in Google photos. I've uploaded 60gb+ of pics from my laptop this way.

      • I was worried about this too.

Can I go back to my very old Nexus 5 and do it this way?

        • Why not, as long as you can install syncthing

        • +1

Nexus 5 didn't have unlimited storage unfortunately.

          • @Switchblade88: Just found that out myself. Thanks though. Have to get a pixel then

    • there's only really two apps you should be installing on this: Google Photos and a File Sync tool.

If you set up the File Sync right (only keep the most recent photos), then it should be fine to sync across. I have about 6 months worth of photos I keep on my pixel and that's roughly about 8GB or so. Mileage differs between people, but yeah set it up to only keep most recent stuff and you'll be ok with storage.

  • +9

solid deal. I paid $100 for a second hand one just for this reason, but battery is pretty much goners. solid price for brand new.

Additional tips: I use Solid Explorer to create a FTP server, and connect to this FTP to transfer pics to the Pixel 1 XL and iOS and android will work well as a means to transfer photos. Add on tailscale for the ability to do this anywhere and not just on the local network.

    • +3

+1 for Tailscale - absolutely incredible tool for connecting to home network from outside with no fuss

      • +1

Tailscale was just a game changer for me. I kept fussing with my home vpn for ages that always had problems. Now i can remote connect to my home pc anytime via tailscale.

        • +2

Yeah me too. Honestly couldn't believe it was free when I first used it cause it was way too good to be true but somehow it is. FOSS software ftw

    • Any benefits over wireguard?

      • +2

Tailscale is wireguard, but a layer on top to manage the keys, addresses, subnets, etc. You can do all that yourself manually, but the harder part might be punching through NAT when both devices are NATted. Tailscale has a central server that kicks off what needs to be done to get through NAT for peer-to-peer connections (https://tailscale.com/blog/how-nat-traversal-works/)

        • Just to add to the tailscale love, it does a bunch of other cool stuff on top of just managing the vpn: dead simple file transfers between devices, ability to add guest accounts with fine-grained permissions, magicdns makes it trivial to assign dns names to devices, etc.

    • Hi, could you please guide on how to do this?
My understanding is that I create FTP server on Android using Solid Explorer. Then I can transfer photos from iPhone? Or can I setup to do this automatically?

(Additionally, Not sure what to do after that using tailscale. Will tailscale automatically give a global IP that I can use to access the FTP?

      • +1

        Hi! Happy to help.

Tailscale is optional and a bonus. It is a VPN and among other things, lets you transfer files or remote connect into other devices on the same (tailscale) network. This is not a tool to automate anything, although I'm sure you can pair tailscale with some other tool to do exactly what you're after. Tailscale lets you keep your pixel 1 at home, and you can still access it and transfer photos to it even if you were on the other side of the world.

I personally use tailscale the most just to use Desktop Remote Connect so I can control my computers at home while not being at home.

Assuming you got all the FTP server set up already, if you install tailscale on the Pixel 1, and say if you have an iphone, ipad, windows, or another android, simply install tailscale there (on both devices) too, turn them on, and you will be given a second, internal IP you can use to connect to.

Instead of your usual 192.168.1.X local IP, tailscale will give you 100.XX.XXX IP - which you can access anywhere in the world assuming you turn on tailscale on both devices. Importantly, this is not a public IP, i.e. without tailscale running on both devices, you cannot connect to this tailscale IP.

So, instead of entering 192.168 IP in, turn on tailscale and use the 100.XX IP. It will connect as if you were on the same local network, well because thats what a VPN is supposed to do.

        Hope that helps.

FTP Server setup for other people:
Solid Explorer -> side bar -> scroll all the way down till you see the very last option "FTP Server"
[Optional] Hit the 3 dots and hit set 'user' and add a username or password.
Hit "Start" and you should see the server status as "ACTIVE"

You can use a range of tools to access this FTP now, I use WinSCP for windows, solid Explorer for Android, FE File Explorer for iphone/ipad (default "Files" should work just fine too) - by simply entering in the IP address (192.168.X.XX) and port (e.g. 9999) and any username or password that you set.

    • but battery is pretty much goners

Do U replace the battery or just keep it plugged in?

      • i just keep it plugged in. It still works fine when unplugged but the % just drop quite quickly even with minimal use. so 'goners' might be a tad exaggeration.

Considering rooting it so I can have the charge up to 80% battery limit that can only be done after rooting.

        • Thanks alot for your explanation.
Wanted to know your thoughts on battery optimisation; is it better to root using AccA mentioned in this post or use a smart plug and setup using Tasker?

          • +1

@ar7ist: Presumably if you can be bothered to root, then the rooting method is less work over the long run..

smart plug and tasker setup seems uh. tedious. in addition, you are still using charge cycles if you're letting it drain down and charge up back to set X%. so the root option is better between the two.

if you root, you could also use it for 7-11 fuel lock gps spoofing. added bonus i guess.

or you can be like me, dont really care since it's sole purpose is to upload photos and not much else - I also bought an old 2nd hand one and not a new phone, so there's that.

          • +1

@ar7ist: I usually turn it off once I've backed up the photos.
            Avoid using a fast charger.
Keep minimum apps on there and turn on battery saver if its not uploading photos

  • +1

Can you share the Pixel unlimited storage by having multiple accounts/ say, by changing accounts every week?

    • +3

      Yes.
You can have multiple accounts signed into the Google Photos app and both accounts get the 'free' uploads when uploading via the pixel. Switching between accounts only takes a few seconds.

  • I have one of these, it gives me around 8gb free storage to upload all my data. Every time my storage hits 14/15gb, I go to google photos and download all the large photos, videos and screenshots and copy it to the phone (after i deleted and removed from trash) works well! I used to have a mod that did this on my day to day phone but there's reports they started banning the google accounts associated without warning!

I use it to upload all my media from action cameras too! works well, worth the $100 i paid!

  • -1

Was looking for a way to have unlimited original quality photos for iPhones with Google Photos.

I thought it was just high quality not original for this? Oh nevermind this is the 1st gen Pixel XL!

  • +1

At $24/yr for 100GB google storage would last you approx 8 yrs that's $188. How many of us have more than 100 gigs of photos and videos unless a professional?

Will this phone last for 8+ yrs, plus the effort of maintaining another phone for an extended period of time?

Also note you might still have to purchase additional Google storage if your Gmail + drive is more than 15GB.

    • +3

Yes but you are missing a key point that when you upload photos/videos with the P1 (pixel 1), they remain in your Google account free forever.

Now according to this here, apparently if you stop playing for Google One, they don't delete your files but they don't let you upload as well.

The benefit of the P1 method is that any photo uploaded there is free from any storage restrictions with/without Google One.

      • Yes that's a good point mate.

However, It'd be interesting to know how many gigabytes of photos and videos people have uploaded with this phone over the years or per year.

Also, Does Google still manufacture these phones, if not, then are these used ones?

        • +2

I bought one of these, they are brand new sealed. Just unsold stock I guess.

        • I've probably got about 300gb to re-upload if I do get this.

Forgot to turn h.265 on my s21 ultra when I first got it. 4k 60p videos are like 1-3 gigs per min

          • +1

@krisspy: Is there a process for re-uploading and deleting the originally uploaded ones?

          • @krisspy: love to know your re-uploading trick mate, I am planning to do same.

          • @krisspy: we have iphone x and 13 pro. and paying for 200gb. jumped on deal.

how to regularly transfer photos from iphone to pixel. share ur tricks mate.

    • +2

I've put over 500GB through my pixel into the cloud. Some of my early videos of the kids when they were babies had to be transcoded becauae they were unsupported formats in google.

      • +2

How do you upload a video that is more than 30GB in size?

        • you dont

    • 4K60fps video from an iPhone is roughly 1GB per minute. Fills up very, very quickly.

I have a few TB of photos and videos uploaded to my google photos.

    • +3

In other words, pretty normal for a 6yo phone?

Even with the unlimited photo storage I don't see a use for most people.

I have about 15000 photos taking up 40GB. 100GB of cloud storage for $24/yr is easily enough for me.

At $188 I'd need 8 years just to break even if I bought this phone

  • good for onlyfans account

  • For Google photos, do you have to keep your Pixel powered on all the time to sync? or can you just turn it on fortnightly to upload the pictures.

    • +2

If you only use it for this purpose, just turn it on when you need to backup. Then off and save the battery.

  • I'm interested for the unlimited cloud storage but can anyone answer the following please

    1) if I buy a used one, can I still get unlimited storage wouldn't it have been redeemed by the previous owner

    2) this phone is old, what happens when software support ends, can we still use it for unlimited storage? Or has support ended

    3) how fast are uploading and then previewing the photos again, I'm using nbn 50.

    4) what happens when we use the unlimited storage but then sell this phone?

    • +1

It's unlimited for the life of the phone. Doesn't matter who the owner is/was, it uploads to your Google account. Phone support already ended. No issue here, still one of the best.
When you sell the phone, reset it. Photos uploaded with pixel 1 doesn't count towards your quota

      • If support has ended doesn't that mean the installing of apps might be an issue
