  • Good price. I might have to wait for second batch of Mk3. :) You know, the issue…

    • canon made announcement in US you can send back for assessment i think in May,

not sure if it is a real issue in real life situations

      • Who wants to buy a new camera to be sent back for assessment.

      • According to the article (URL provided below), "products whose sixth digit in the serial number is 1 or 2 are affected".

So, if you want to get 5D Mark III now, avoid ones whose sixth digit in the serial number is 1 or 2.

It's a massive issue for people who shoot with lens or body caps on.

        • I have a slightly different interpretation. The test with lens cap on is never about taking photos with the lens cap on (no Canon 5D Mark III owner would do that – the person who did the review knows more about DSLR than me so I am 100% sure it is not about taking photos with lens cap on). It is to show the following:

When there is no light (zero light) entering the lens, his Canon 5D Mark III will take light within the camera and light shinning directly at the camera (which somehow reaches the light sensor) into consideration to determine the exposure settings. Is this a correct behaviour for a high end, full frame DSLR?

We all know that 5D Mark III does not have the capability to know whether the lens cap is on or off, which means this behaviour / issue does occur even with lens cap off. The review I saw clearly shows pictures with lens cap “off” and demonstrates the issue in really low light condition (real photos). That review never takes a photo with lens cap on.

Normally, you would ensure sufficient light goes into the lens (which mean those little bit of light within the camera or near camera becomes non factor).

The article I read was done by a Canon 5D Mark III owner. It is an objective review. The conclusion of the review is that it is not a serious issue, but is an issue that Canon needs to look into. Canon did look into it.

Personally, recommending people to avoid the batches which may have this issue is not a bad suggestion. For a $3000+ camera, it is fine to be a bit choosy / picky.

        • they've fixed it now anyway,

yes it is tape but if they did this in the first place no one would never of known

and the fix does what its meant to do.

    • There is a list on the canon website with the SN that's has been effected

  • +2

i find ted's price to be dearer than other retailers, so the 10% for canon is not worth it

    • yeah, its mostly a deal for the 5d mark III which brings it close to grey market price,
also if your going overseas and get TRS brings it down another 10%

      • Well yes and no in regards to TRS - if you are over the $900 limit on the way back in you need to declare it and pay GST again. You could try and sneak it through however but its a risk.

        From the TRS site:

"Bringing the goods back into Australia
If the goods are to be brought back into Australia, please be aware that they may be subject to GST. Normal passenger concessions apply and include any items for which a TRS claim has been approved (excluding most personal items such as new clothing, footwear and articles for personal hygiene and grooming). If the value of those goods together with overseas purchases exceeds the passenger concession, the goods must be declared to Customs on your return to Australia. Penalties apply to undeclared taxable goods."

        • never had that problem before.

  • You can always haggle TED down 10% their RRP-like prices.

    • Last time I asked TED to price match JB Hi-Fi, they refused. Their excuse: JB Hi-Fi often sell below cost (I am cynical about that statement). The price I asked them to price match was just a price the JB sales lady gave me (certainly not the best JB Hi-Fi price).

  • sometime myer has 15% for camera + extra 10% for buying myer gift card

    • does myer stock 5d mark III ?

      • They can order it in.

        • Are you sure, some of the higher end camera are only sold to certain camera specialist stores

  • +1

If you are after anything Canon high end, some of these are great prices. I need an 8-15MM. JB will not even come close to there price. Same for the 5D Mark III. This is a good price from a regular retailer. I am not interested in HK imports for this type of gear.

  • Any soon to close DSE seem to have 30% off cameras if that is any help to anyone.

I got the Olympus E-pm1 twin kit (rrp $799) for $509 . Their price must have been less than rrp as that is more like 35% off.

  • I want to get a nifty fifty for my 550D. Worth looking at this sale?

    • I think you can get it for ~$100 online or even just under so it's up to you. Canon lenses have worldwide warranty if I am not wrong so I'd just get it from the cheapest place you can.

      Incredible lens for the price.
