    Nice find,
The 'Fire TV Stick 4K Max' is also available for $59 by entering the coupon 'FTVUPGRADE' in checkout.
It says this underneath the pricing on the one you linked.

Ah Thanks Richard. Did not see this. I stand corrected.

        • -3

All good, you can sit down now

    • +1

      Definitely targeted :(
Been waiting for them to come back down to $59

      • What does Targeted mean?

        • +1

If they don't send you an email or notification you can't use it.
In this case you need to have an older non-4k firestick to get the reduction

    • Damn got me excited

    • Literally just bought one for $99 yesterday :(

  • +8
    • And states Advertised price ends 12 May 2022.
So no rush, unless they run out of stock.
But I'm guessing they are overstocked. Hence the price.

Awesome deal, been tossing up getting a 4k max for the occasional use while on holidays but never got it… $22 for 1080P streaming will be perfect to take away.

    • +1

That's what I'd recommend a Kindle Lite. i.e. plug it into the TV in your hotel room with all your apps pre-installed and logged in
However, I find it is too slow for my regular TV. i.e. Kodi, HEVC etc
      Great for the price though

  • +1

This or Google chromecast with TV?

    • +7

Definitely Google tv. Cause it has 4k support, Dolby vision, volume and dedicated app buttons and Google Play store

      • +3

And native cast from phone to Chromecast device

        • By native casting do you mean you can plug it into any HDMI without a wifi network and cast from your phone (iphone in this case)? The OG chromecast requires wifi which you can work around with 2 phones and hotspots but is a real pain. I'd grab one if I could just cast to it directly from 1 phone. I had a google and couldn't find it covered.

          • @Wombatstew: Google cast requires direct internet from the device as it doesn't actually stream from your phone to the chromecase (although you can hostspot and cast your entire screen via the google home app) it just uses the phone to control it and connects to streaming services directly.

This amazon stick actually has miracast support which does let you cast directly from your phone to the stick.

You'd have to compare apples with apples. 4k Max would be similar in price to Google TV and does 4k with Dolby Vision and wifi6 along with the better remote

    • +25

      Depends on your budget.
You're comparing a $20ish device with a $100ish device. Of course get the most expensive.

      • +1

This is ozbargain, I thought it would be "of course get the cheaper one"

        • No.

          • @PainToad: OK (gets in 80k investment and drives off)

        • this is incorrect

the ozbargain way is to buy 5x lites for the same price of 1 4k max

    • +2

I'd recommend the fire 4k max. Only downside is no kayo app. Have to use the Kodi plugin. I find the 4k max more slick through the menus and the remote to be better than the Chromecast. I think the 4k max is claimed 40% better performance than the fire 4k which was about the equal performance as the Chromecast tv.

    • Amazon fire tv stick use miracast which in theory should support Samsung Dex wireless connection.

I assume Google Chrome cast doesn't support Dex at the moment

      • What's the use case?

        • Miracast is a standard for wireless connections from sending devices to display receivers

  • +1

Are these any good as a Plex client?

    • the4k MAX is extremely good as a plex client, no lag whatsoever and im using my PC as the server. im not sure if the normal firestick is as smooth but it should be viable but if you can afford too i can recommend the 4k MAX anyday

      • Does the 4k Max have issues with HEVC content, like the google chromecast/Standard Fire stick? I found on those devices my HEVC tv shows were constantly failing playback, and/or restarting the device every time a new episode started. Was irritating, but I think it's a Android issue?

        • I'd like to know the answer to this too

        • doesn't from kodi installed on mine

    • Yep

  • I have kayo account but can't play on my otherwise smart tv. Would kayo work using firestick?

    • +5

I have it working on my firestick lite. You need the Android TV APK. I recall that the kayo logo wasn't appearing on the app list, it was just a blank logo. I found a custom APK on the Whirlpool kayo thread where someone updated to have the kayo logo. You also need a wireless file transfer app from Amazon store to transfer the APK from your phone to the firestick.

      • +1

        Or just use sideloader

        • +4

Or use the Kayo addon in Kodi

  • Can we install Google Play store apps/android apps in this device?

    • Yes, with sideloader app.

      • Could you please let me know what is this mean by sideloader app? Or share the link for me to read.
        Thanks

        • +2

Google is your friend. It's very straightforward.

  • Does Binge have to be sideloaded as well?

  • Can I get Apple TV+ on this and working without problems? I've sideloaded the apk onto my Android TV and the picture breaks up every time I try to watch something. I have the top residential plan with AussieBroadband so I doubt it's a speed/bandwidth thing.

    • +1

Native Apple app for all fire sticks I believe

  • Are these still being locked down?

  • Does anyone try to connect Fire TV with a hotspot tethering?

    https://www.lifewire.com/connect-fire-stick-to-mobile-hotspo…

    • +1

Mobile hotspot creates a wifi network which is the same that a router creates so there's no difference between connecting this to a hotspot vs a router

  • Any feedback with the ads on this? techradar says "too many ads"

    • +1

      I don't get ads.

    • +3

The main menu is full of ads, mostly for Amazon TV shows. Use SmartTubeNext for youtube without any ads.

    • Link to article? No ads here.

      • Lol, of course there is ads. That's how Amazon sell all their devices cheap.

        • +5

Oh right, recommendations for new shows.
I just binge watch, don't spend enough time on the home page to be slightly annoyed by those recommendations.
It's not like they are pushing ads for yoghurt or lego

    • +2

Wolf launcher used to completely get rid of all the ads but a recent Amazon update broke all custom launchers sadly.

      • I use wolf. About a week ago my custom launcher was disabled (I was like WTF) but I just reset launch to wolf and all was good again. Will research further.

      • So still possible to use wolf on a new device?

    • Been using mine for a long time now:

      Ads main splash page
      Ads when watching Prime
Plex locks up sometimes, so the remote becomes unresponsive (but no lag when the movie/show is playing, even at 4K!)
The sound can rarely play up, turning chimp monk on you, have to reset if it does

      Not bad, 7.5/10.

    • +1

None of them make it past my PiHole.

  • -2

I have the previous one without the mic button. it is impossibly slow. very frustrating to use

  • Can you run these with something like kodi/VLC and USB storage for use in a car without need for constant internet?

    • You've got HDMI in your car?

      • roof mount dvd players with hdmi

      • +1

If he's got a previous generation Civic he does.

    • +1

I dunno about using it in the car but with a $2 otg splitter cable you can play anything off a USB or external hard drive with VLC.

  • Has anyone knowledge of which device should work best for in car use via hdmi/composite adapter?

    • I am told that a VTR adapter will plug into the rear of my factory Toyota headunit.

  • +1

it's just so silly not to have volume control

    • That's why it cost $20ish.
You can probably ditch the fire remote and use your tv remote all together.

      • i mean i can understand not even coming with a remote for $20.. but surely the cost is the remote itself and then having a volume button is just a almost free add on?

  • -6

Lowest price so far to bring one of Bezos' digital hearholes into your home! W00t

Had I not taken mine back the very next day, I'd have followed one of the online video guides for ripping the microphone from within the remote (note doing so may void the warranty, and make the remote look clearly violated by a screwdriver)

    • +2

They dont have enough storage to be recording you and not have us device hackers find the files, or notice packet differences if it were streamed.

Thats the upside of hyper-popular devices, they're scrutinised harder than any other devices, so secrets are infinitely harder to have, let alone keep.

If you're 'into' the whole paranoia of big brother (I get it, it can be fun to pretend sometimes) the current biggest 'common' risk is windows hello biometric profiles; but people will happily sacrifice, for the convenience.

      • Yeah I realise it sounds paranoid, and maybe it is a little. I just don't want to have on my mind those reported cases of real humans somewhere reviewing accidental activation of voice commands on these kinds of devices, when there's a simple enough and 100% reliable solution that works for those of us who wouldn't use the voice command features anyway.
Much happier with my Odroid n2+ for kodi etc. which is what I bought the Amazon stick for.

        • Could have also ditched the remote and use your tv remote. Works on my 10yo Tv …

          • +1

@ShouldIBuyIt: Didn't return the Amazon stick because of the microphone. I have screwdrivers.
Got rid of it due to poor playback performance in kodi.

  • Thanks OP, grabbed another one of these, for another older TV.

  • is it possible to run mame games off this?

  • +1

bought for parents oldish Samsung TV that has that useless old OS on it. Thanks.

  • -5

Better then Yum Cha android crap

  • Can we install an Android Operation System on this?

    • Already running one.

      • Sorry, but did you mean they already come with Android pre-installed?

        • FireOS is a skinned version of Android, with some limitations on apps that will ne to be sideloaded.

        • Yes, its already Android.
Using the 'higher spec' ones as emulator sticks is common practice.

  • I'm setting up a relatively old led tv, the antenna connection is broken though. Does this allow me to watch Live TV or do I need to get a new tv?
