What benefits does this have over, say, a free bike light which i can also afford

    /s

Ps: username checks out isn't clever

    • +15

It has a radar built in to show vehicle proximity behind the rider. If you're comparing this to the free lights then you're probably not the target consumer.

        • +6

..and sarcasm? That's just too far.

Also spotted this deal (as in the 'chill25' code) and ordered 2x Moon Cerberus rear lights. Although, the thing is that Pushys prices it at $69 whereas bikebug prices it at $54 - and I feel its priced that way since Pushys owns BB. If you order 2 from pushys, with the discount and free shipping it comes to slightly cheaper per unit than BB but if u just buy 1 then u pay BB a few extra bucks.

I'm tempted with this radar light now tho.

Radar is a very advanced feature, but I have doubts about it's practicality. How will it work exactly? I doubt it knows which speed zone it's in. So, as soon as you start riding in a 70 zone the alarm will probably drive you crazy. Will you be jumping on the kerb each time it sounds? Or how exactly is it supposed to increase your safety?

    • I also looked it up, it is quite neat https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhRVOV09yM4

with a Garmin head unit, it shows green dot for safe, and moving black dots showing the relative speed of each individual cars behind you as they approach. So it does a similar function to a head check.

Thanks for review. Says it is useless in the city…
Also, the weight and volume is about 4 times heavier than my Olight RN120. They do not advertise how bright this Garmin is, so hard to compare in that sense…
PS if you think that's neat - check out Olight RN120.

        • It is 65 lumens in day flashing mode. Changes the flashing style when it senses a fast car.

    • Typically, you would be riding in a 60 zone (or slower). If you do ride on a rural road with higher speed limits, here is a review by GPLama - there is a section about on-road use at about the 6:15min mark of the video.

      • I like the feature of showing the count of the cars. Typically I hear the first car, head check but hard to know if it is fully clear.

I’ve been riding with one for about a half a year now. It’s actually really good. You would need a Garmin head unit to get best experience out of it. It detects objects approaching from about 150m away and then shows colour coded the speed difference the object is coming towards you at. Also has a little dot showing roughly how far away the object is. If the object matches your riding speed it will disappear as it thinks it’s turned off the road. But I find it great to just let you know someone is approaching and you can then be more aware and do head checks etc.
Yes you can also do this with bike mirror but doesn’t look cool.
If you ride with friends who also have a Garmin head unit you have have them connect to it too.

i'm pretty sure it also works with Wahoo units

      • Works perfectly fine on my Wahoo Bolt

      • I also use it with a Wahoo ELEMNT BOLT and the integration is brilliant!!

    • +2

Varia Radar is a situational awareness device that detects vehicles traveling more than 10kph faster behind you and sends audio and visual alerts to your Garmin/Wahoo/Hammerhead bike computer. It can also send vibration alerts to a Garmin watch.

Bought one of these last 15% off sale. My only regret is not buying one of these sooner!

    • +4

      same!

      • +3

Double same. This is the best piece of kit I’ve bought for my bike.

  • +2

I have one and it is only worthwhile on roads that are not busy.

I mostly use it on bike paths and gets annoying as it keeps beeping due to cars on the road. So I turn if off on bike path and turn it on when I am on the road.

Wish it could sense that based on maps and work accordingly.

      • That's more than sufficient for a rear bike light. Have you ever cycled at night?

        • -2

How do you define "more than sufficient"? You buy a dim device and then convince yourself that it is bright enough?..
Industry standard nowdays is at least around 100 Lm for rear and 1000-2000 Lm front for compact devices. I would not say it is too much.
And yeah baby I have cycled at night more than you ever will https://www.strava.com/athletes/17337824

Because I ride around at night with Niterider Lumina 1000 headlight and a cheapo, Chinese 60Lm taillight and have never had traffic nearly hit me or not see me.

And I'm often riding on unlit roads where there's little to no street light coverage.

Sorry I don't use Strava, because it's mainly for c#cks and w#nkers, so I can't see your self-indulgent PR wankery or whatever lame, middle-aged-man-wearing-lycra-and-overcompensating-too-hard sh*t you want to brag about it.

            Cool story though, wannabe-Lance Armstrong.

            • -1

@Gnostikos: There are plenty of people who don't use tail lights at all, and they were never hit as well. I started with a cheap $5 Chinese tail light. That was 100Lm though. Usually you will find mostly dated devices are below 100 Lm. Or, if it was designed and produced nowdays it is simply too dim. You want to stand out in a flow of traffic. Thus, >100 Lm is needed.

But I am telling this not for you, rather for someone else who will be reading it. You seem to be too square headed to listen and to understand anything. I don't mind being called whatever you just said for using strava, doesn't bother me. Just draws a picture of what kind of a person you are.

    • just put it on mute, you can still see it and when you jump on the road it is there and working

  • Holding out for the next version which hopefully be released this year, based on previous garmin release schedules.

  • +4

New model coming soon. Hold off from buying. It will be a significant update

    https://road.cc/content/tech-news/garmin-patents-bike-camera…

    • +3

Probably a significant price increase too.

    • +2

A report on a patent really does not indicate that a new model is coming soon to consumers. This isn't macrumours with quite a defined cycle of products.

      • ^This. If you need one, buy this now and upgrade later. Don't hold your breath that the new version will be released anytime soon.

      • +1

I have insider info. That's all I will say

        • +1

Hmmmmmm…. I bought one from Amazon last week for $276 delivered. But I'll admit I'm a sucker for internet rumours and leaks lol. You've got me thinking it might be a good idea to return it now. Decisions, decisions…

I also bought an edge 530 from Amazon at the same time. Any tip offs about the new edge x40 series releasing any time soon?

  • +1

Had one of these for a couple of years with zero regrets. Peace of mind, rarely having to look over your shoulder or be surprised by rear engine buses.

  • +1

One of the best bike purchases Ive made

  • Had this for 2 years now and it’s amazing - gives you a lot of confidence on the road particularly with more electric vehicles that you can’t hear easily.

  • Can anyone recommend a set of lights <$100

    • Yes, i am using the Moon Crescent Front Light and Moon Cerberus Rear Light.
Perfectly to blind someone's eyes… Great lumens for daytime use.

  • I have this, works well on most roads, but if your commute includes strips of cycle paths along side busy roads (e.g. Epping rd, M2 motorway etc in NSW), it's almost useless as it will just be consistently beeping even if there aren't really cars behind you "directly".

    • Not hard to mute the sound on my Wahoo so I'd expect you can do the same with a Garmin head unit?

      • Yeah I've muted mine on my Garmin Edge. Pity turning it back on again requires drilling down 4-5 menu screens. Tried searching for some Connect IQ app that lets me switch it on/off as a shortcut but no luck so far.

        • That's a shame, I have the Karoo 2, its one swipe and there's a mute option.

  • Thanks OP, had been eyeing these off for a while!

  • Can someone recommend a good mount setup for phone? I dont want to use a bike computer. Desfit says he just uses a normal 'quarter turn mount' which he has glued to the back of his phone case. So suggestions along those lines welcome.

    • +1

Been using Quad Lock for years. Hasn't skipped a beat.

    • quadlock is great, need a specific case for your phone though

      • quadlock is too much money? i just spent 255 on a light, i need to buy a cheap mount now lol.

        • $60ish for a rock solid case and the mount isn't too bad, but yea haven't tried any alternatives because it just works

          • +1

@dmgdx: took your advice and ordered one. thank you.

  • gave in. ordered one

  • +1

got mine. Awesome product. Apart from the awareness it gives you even from cars far away, I've noticed people pass me differently.
