Kindle Paperwhite 5 8GB 11th Generation 2021 $183.08 + $5 Delivery ($0 C&C/ eBay Plus) @ The Good Guys eBay

750
TOPITUP

This is only a little higher than the historic lowest. I had a link in my original deal (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/695868), but some people may miss it like that. It is a sale multiplied by an ebay code.

Arguably better value than Signature edition as there is little to gain there (wireless charging, ambient adjustable light and 32GB storage instead of 8GB).

This Kindle Paperwhite is designed for those who are looking to replicate the printed-page feeling without the bulk of carrying around a novel, offering 8 GB of space for your favourite reads. The slim, lightweight design of the Kindle Paperwhite can be held in one hand and has a glare-free screen with adjustable light-temperature for comfortable viewing. You can read in the bath or at the beach and worry less about spills thanks to the Kindle's water-resistant design.
It has a 6.8", 300 ppi display that's anti-glare with an adjustable warm light and an auto-adjusting front light.
It offers up to 8 GB of storage, giving you enough space for thousands of books.
The long-lasting battery gives you up to 10 weeks of battery.
It charges via USB-C (cable included).
The water-resistant design can withstand accidental splashes and immersions, so you can read in the bath or at the beach.
It can be used with a Kindle Unlimited subscription for unlimited access to over 1 million titles.
PS There is minimal cashback on ebay plus you can get discounted gift cards to increase the savings.

A few words on the infamous amazon ecosystem:

  1. Your home screen interface is not really customizable. You will have some Amazon kindle market suggestions that can not be switched off, but not ads as such. But if you will work with your library only (another tab from home screen) - you will just see your books.

  2. You can upload ebooks (that you can get for free from multitude of places, not just amazon market) in any formats to your kindle: EPUB, DOC, PDF, MOBI, AZW3… The easiest way to do it is by emailing the books to your amazon email address. If you will put "convert" in subject field, will convert to MOBI as well. But what about DjVU? It will not read that, but no ereader natively can at this stage. So, convert to PDF first.

  3. Kobo fans, please stop spamming us. Kindle PW 2021 is cheaper than Libra 2 and from the technical standpoint is equal to it (some minor differences, you can read about that everywhere on the internet). The fact that you can natively hook up one and not the other to libraries can be irrelevant to some. Please respect other people choices.

I returned my Kindle because it felt like an amazon purchase portal. I couldn't load files directly via USB-C. I linked it to local library's, but they have little digital content. Apparently some of the library management software (calibre?) can copy to them but I'd returned it by that stage.

    • +8

Calibre is really good software. I don't have experience with this new version but certainly did everything needed on the kindle 4

    • How did you get local library content to kindle? I am unable to do it.

      • +3

You should just be able to plug it in to your computer, the kindle will show up as a drive, and copy the files across. They need to be in mobi format though, not epub. They might need to be in a particular folder, perhaps Documents or something? I do it all the time with my kids' current-model kindles.

      • +2

Just use calibre. Add to calibre library, then send to device

      • +1

I've just used the Convertio web site for many years converting from Epub to Mobi and then copy over via USB.
        https://convertio.co/epub-mobi/

        • I tried it and it works, but I have this complex document with multiple pictures in it… It failed. Luckily, I can just use it in original PDF on kindle

      • Sorry Guys, i meant is there an app similar to borrow box where I can use my Library card for free ebook reads?

        • I think I found something like that, but I do not like physical libraries restrictions in relation to issue of ebooks so haven't really used it yet. I think it was OverDrive…

        • No, the library apps in Australia don't work with the Kindle. Borrowbox doesn't work anywhere, and Overdrive only works with Kindle in the US.

          • @junkmark: I could get the St Kilda library onto my kindle via linking the "Libby" app but there was little content aside from dull magazines.

    • +5

A lot of people complain about content availability… It has not been a problem for me. If one can get content for Kindle it is the best value ereader.

I think, if an erader can read conventional formats like Kindle can (epub, word, pdf) it should not be their problem to provide you with content. I am not using kindle store by the way.

If you do not like ads don't go to the Home page, go to your library page.

PS hate it when someone is being negged after a somewhat negative comment, I plussed you.

    • I use the calibre software to manage local content and have never had any issues with it. Does a great job of converting files not already in Kindle compatible format. Makes it so easy to manage your library.

    • +1

There is a way to email them to your kindle too. You need to convert to the kindle format and then email it to your kindle email. I can’t remember all the steps as currently I don’t have a kindle. Thinking of getting one soon again though.

      • +7

You just email a book to your kindle email. Does not have to be in Mobi format, can be DOC, PDF, EPUB… Weird, but they do not accept AWZ and AWZ3 format!
If you put "convert" in subject field, converts to Mobi.

        • I did not know this! What a great tip. Cheers!

          • @C-Nut: It's good because it's wireless and does not wear your device USB input.

    • +4

This is why everyone buys Kobo's. Totally unlocked. You can even upgrade the storage pretty easily.

      • -2

Just as stated repeatedly in this thread: would make sense if the price was equal but it is not. So, you are paying more for it to be "totally unlocked". Only makes sense if you can not source content to kindle.
Kindle is not locked in a sense that you can not sideload files to it. You can absolutely load any files you want without resitrictions. The only issue might be with sourcing those files, but I do not have that issue…
How can you upgrade storage in Kobo? It is soldered on.

        • -1

It's a small 6" display, the equivalent kobo nia is $30 cheaper. Just without USB-C, but it is totally unlocked. As in usb drag-and-drop, which the kindle isn't. For the same price you can get a better kobo.

          • @[Deactivated]: Can you move Amazon kindle ebooks onto the kobo?

            • -1

@Circly: Yes. Easily, using Calibre. Which you'd be using to manage you library anyway. If it's DRM locked, there's plugins. If they want to be a dick about it and the plugins don't work, well, you bought it, just "source" the book in any one of a billion widely available seas.

          • -2

@[Deactivated]: Kindle is drag and drop, please don't confuse people.

So, you can get a better Kobo for $180? Which one?

            • @Musiclover: Kindle is drag drop of mobi files. Not the popular epub format, or pdf, or the others. It is absolutely not an open platform and you don't even get a discount on the hardware for being muslced into a closed ecosystem.

You're either being wilfully misleading here or simply don't know better. No, these two are "not the same".

The Nia is cheaper than the kindle new. The Clara HD has gone for $129 on this site.

I don't know if you're just locked into the ecosystem or have a vested interest here but you're defending an inferior product to the death. Pause to reflect. It's okay that you're wrong.

              • +1

@[Deactivated]: I have been drag and dropping both via USB and email DOC, PDF and epub without any issues. Clara HD has a smaller screen than Kindle PW. The other option is Nia now? It is smaller screen as well. Next option?
                6" not equal to 6.8"
You can upload any formats to Kindle.
Yep, I have been bribed by evil amazon. Conspiracy theory rules.

                • +1

@Musiclover: No, you haven't drag-dropped epub onto a kindle device. That'd be a blunt lie that has me questioning if you even own one. As per this wonderful guide written a month ago, it's not a thing : https://www.reddit.com/r/kindle/comments/t9jb4i/how_to_sidel…

If you email it your amazon acc, it'll do the conversion for you.

I won't be engaging with you any further, given that's multiple occasions on which you've lied or tried to imply other features aren't possible (ie, leaving the ecosystem, and taking your books with you).

                  Good day to you.

                  • +2

@[Deactivated]: When you state that Kindle is "locked to Amazon ecosystem" what does it even mean? People assume, that you would not be able to load books that you download into Kindle, but it is not true. You can upload any formats into Kindle without restrictions. You can argue semantics all you want, but I have been able to load and read EPUB, DOC, PDF, MOBI, AZW3 into kindle without much fuss. None of the books were downloaded from Kindle store.

                    • @Musiclover: This is a straight up lie. You cannot drag/drop those formats via usb, particularly the most popular, Epub. yes, you can email via amazon, but that locks you into having an amazon account.

            • @Musiclover: My recent (last 6 months) kindle was not drag and drop.

        • +1

I’ve got both the Clara and the new paperwhite the kindle was dearer then kobo and still is .
Kobo is a lot better for the Australian market with overdrive built in so you can browse and borrow books from the library .
I only use kindle for prime reading and unlimited for the 3 month trial .

          • @rumchaser: I have no need for overdrive… But just so that I understand it: Are you able to use overdrive on your desktop or mobile to download actual book files to your PC? Or is an e-reader your only way to use it but you never have access to actual book files?..

UPD had a little read and it appears that some library books are device locked (Adobe EPUB) thus, simple sending to Kindle could be problematic, I am not sure which percentage of Australian library books are DRM protected and which are open.

            • @Musiclover: There are tools out there to remove the DRM from adobe epub, it integrates with calibre and you can send to your Kindle in a couple clicks.

              Search on Google for

              Calibre DeDRM plugin

Once you've removed the DRM you can return the books on Overdrive and read at your own pace on Kindle

            • @Musiclover: I’ve never used it on my pc but I use it on my phone and tablets as well as my kobo

      • I don't believe they're totally unlocked, right? The 'boox' e-ink products (www.boox.com) sound more unlocked to me, where you can install the Amazon, Kobo, etc apps. But you pay for the privilege.

        • +1

          No, they really are.

I have one. It comes up as a usb drive, you can drag/drop whatever you like onto it.

BOOX is going to have the usual android device "end of life" support/version issues at some point.

I don't need android apps on my e-reader, and I'm happy to sync by usb so don't care about "over the air" updates.

I'm also seeing multiple crew saying the displays on the kobo (particularly the new, "up front" screens" are nicer.

I only use my e-reader device for, well, reading so…

      • I think on the latest models they have stopped this.

        • +3

They are totally unlocked. On the some of newer ones they glue'd the SD card in, which is a bit of a dick move, but solvable. Though apparently it might have been done for waterproofing.

  • +1

    Just bought it. Thanks

  • +3

Don't have Kindle, but apparently there was a new hack released which would allow you to install other reader software to avoid being kind of dragged into the amazon store the whole time. Might be worthwhile researching. I use a Kobo for this same reason

    • Jailbrake is potentially dangerous, you might brick the device.
Just as I said before - lots of free content available without jailbrakes, but depends on what you like. I do not read modern bestsellers, prefer classical literature and use it for notes to play instruments.

      • Meanwhile Kobo natively supports sideloading books and 'jailbreaking', with it also being possible to restore the device if you do somehow brick it.

        • -2

Imagine a situation where a person (i.e. me) has all of the content his heart desires for Kindle. Why would he want to pay signifacantly more for Kobo? Kobo's main benefit is content, all the rest is minor. So I did not want to pay around 30% more for it.

          • +1

@Musiclover: Isn't the Kobo Claris the same price though? Same size, also has reading light, built in WiFi with Overdrive for borrowing from libraries.

Unless you're committed to the Amazon ebookstore, it's a crapshoot between them.

            • @bydl: Clara HD… Not sure, could be the same price. But it is a smaller screen, lost my interest there. Could be other differences.

              • +1

@Musiclover: Well then buy the libra 2 it’s got a bigger screen and 32gb as well as physical buttons if that’s your thing .rrp is cheaper then the signature PW .

And having both the Clara and the new PW the Clara’s screen is way better to read off .the light is better and the size is more comfortable to hold .
You do know you just adjust font size to whatever suits you and the bigger screen doesn’t do anything other then reduce page turns .

Also the kindle doesn’t give any reading time statistics where as the kobo does.

                • -2

@rumchaser: Yes, libra 2 has 7" vs 6.8" on PW. Whole 0.2 inch bigger screen. Good for you if you notice that.
The screens are identical in quality.
Kindle does give reading time (ETA remaining) etc.

                  • @Musiclover: Kobo gives full stats actually tells you how long it’s taking to read a book and overall reading time .
Kindle gives an estimate only of how long is left .

            • +2

@bydl: The Kobo Nia is the same thing but cheaper, with all the unlocked benefits. It's not a crapshoot, for the new entrant it's the clear winner.

              • +1

@[Deactivated]: Ah the JB listing didn't mention WiFi, while the Rakuten page did, my bad.

If that's the case, then it's a very strong competitor to the Paperwhite HD if you're not tied to Amazon's own bookstore.

              • @[Deactivated]: Kobo Nia is 1 inch smaller screen.

    • +4

i purchased a kindle for my daughter, i have calibre installed on my computer, i literally drag all the files i want on top of the calibre interface it copies it to a designated location, i plug in via USB, then i click 'send to device' for titles i want on her e-reader. Not once have i purchased a book from amazon for it.

If we really want to complain about anything then the generally over priced and often DRM hellscape that legitimately distributed ebooks live in we should unite against. We shouldn't be kobo vs kindle we should be e-reader users vs industry.

oh and i have literally done zero changes to the device, no jail break, no tweaks, etc… this just works out of the box this way. While i am reasonable on computers this wasn't a long journey to get here.

  • -4

just read tangible books, you spend enough time staring at a screen

    • +1

Send us a picture of your paperback library would you? You must have an impressive one. I used to have hundreds of paper books in my grandparents place and it was never enough. It occupied all walls. Also, how many books have you read during the last month/year?
The idea of an ereader is an e-ink screen which provides similar experience to paper.

      • i just use the library, i dont actually own too many books. Uhh probably about three last month, this year maybe 10-12? i dont really keep count lol

        • What was the last one?

        • I borrow my books from the library directly to my kobo don’t even have to waste my time driving down to the library or worry about overdue books .

    • Amount of textbooks I have to "read" is stupid (a part of the registration process I am going through), there are at least a textbook for each modalities that I am looking at so, at least 5+ textbooks + other supplementary readings I have to do. This is not even considering other elements of the discipline and more specific topics as well.

Frankly speaking, as long as I can get 3+ textbooks/reference materials at a reasonable price from Amazon, I think I'd be a happy camper.

      • fair point

  • I will get it from Amazon at $199 with 7% cashback (=199 / 1.1 * 0.07 = 13) = $186.

    • But this is cheaper, delivered at $183.08. Is there a benefit of paying more at Amazon? Serious question.

      • +1

I buy a lot from Amazon and returns are simple. Rarely buy from eBay. If eBay / GG return policy is good then it shouldn't matter at all.

      • Almost certainly faster delivery, especially if you have prime.

      • Not exactly, it is less than $183, depending on where you can source your ebay gift cards from and cashback.

      • +1

        Absolutely.

Same day or next day deliveries in metro areas.

If you buy it and find out within 30 days that you don't actually have much use for a Kindle, Amazon will refund the whole purchase price minus $7 return shipping.

The Good Guys won't take change of mind returns for used goods at all, save $17, potentially lose $183 if it's not a good fit for you

      • +1

In my case, I used the amazon no questions asked return for my kindle as my reason for ordering from them.

    • How do you get the 7% cashback in Amazon? And can you apply the 7% the the $240 Signature edition to make it $223?

  • You won't be returning to good guys for change of mind

    • Not to GG directly. To GG via Ebay you surely can. Ecspecially if you have Plus/Paypal.

      • doubt for change of mind, if faulty sure, they are not amazon or apple

        • Make up your mind and commit to it. On a serious note - have returned ebay items for change of mind, but I have ebay plus.

          • @Musiclover: so have I but would be painful with gg

          • @Musiclover: just tried a return on mine bought from GG, got this:

This item can only be returned in-store
Please return this item to the following store

  • +2

If you are not sure if going to like it better to buy from amazon, also warranty is better direct with amazon, if buy from gg they will make you go back through them

  • +1

Btw Jb-hug sells this for $199. If you managed to score $200 gift card for $160 don’t forget to use those gc (hence it’d cost $159 if you got that offer).

  • +3

I've been looking to replace a second gen Paperwhite. I was tempted to get this or the Kobo Clara HD, whichever came in a decent special first. The warm light and higher resolution on both were strong motivators for an upgrade. I got this 5th Gen Paperwhite (thanks OP), but I also found the Kobo Clara HD a fantastic device, having used one for several days.

This 5th Gen Paperwhite is amazing. The warm light, wonderfully even LED lighting, higher resolution of text, and snappiness of page flipping make it even more of a joy to read on than my beloved 2nd Gen Paperwhite.

    • I prefer the light on, even on a sunny day (indoors)… It is dissapointing that the light drains the battery significantly. Don't enjoy the yellow light as it decreases the contrast.
But overall - second your opinion, great device for the price.

  • Any one have received the kindle yet? I ordered one on 1st May, still not sent yet.

  • It’s $239 and 8% off with code. How do you get $183?

    • +1

      Must have gone up, noted.
