The O’Brien glass ads on TV did a number on me like clown college did for homer. So I started researching cheaper alternatives and came across this.

Now. Before you jump to amazon reviews it’s important to view them holistically.

motor1 sums up this product well:

The Rain-X Windshield Repair Kit is currently the number one bestseller on Amazon for ‘Windshield & Glass Repair Tools.’ Despite this accolade, customer feedback is mixed with an average rating of 3.9 out of 5 stars from over 26,000 reviews.

Positive reviews claim that patience is the most important part of using this repair kit.

Many customers noted that their windshields were almost completely repaired as long as they followed the provided instructions.

Someone actually left a negative review on a windshield repair kit because it's

    Useless on mobile phone screen

    Wow.

    • +10

Yet someone left a 5 star review for a repair on a tablet.

      YMMV lol

  • +3

Used it on a descent sized chip and saved myself $160 which was the cheapest quote. Got a spare one in my glivebox. Patience really is the key. Actual time doing anything is 5 minutes but spread over an hour. :)

    • I'd love to look in your glivebox.

      • +4

gliveboxes are rare, but I found one on eBay:

        https://www.ebay.com/itm/113861593863?_ul=CN

        • +6

Actually gliveboxes aren't rare at all… it's just there are so many illitnitrate people around today who can't speel.

        • +2

Strange no one has bought that yet US$175 for a 54 year old rusty glivebix should be the actual ozbargain.

    • +1

I got quotes to fix a chip on average they were between $40 and $60. With warranty. If it doesn't work, then you get discount off windscreen.

  • Regular price here is around $37/$38.
Does it have a use by date?

    • +3

Not sure about this particular one, but all resins would have a shelf life. They would probably say a couple of years but should last 5+ years (or more) when kept out of direct sunlight and at room temperature. I wouldn't be storing it in your car glovebox the the person above as the heat would lessen the life a lot.

  • 'Usually dispatched in 1 to 2 months'

  • Damn took too long to buy it and now it's back up to $33

    • +2

You have to select the $17.59 uk option

      • +1

        Its now 17.96! D:

    • +1

Choose a different seller, still available for $17.96

    • Yep my bad. When I refreshed it changed seller

  • +1

Does this work with scratches caused by old wipers?

    • +1

I would like to know too, but probably not as it looks like rge kit focuses on a point and may not work for a "streak" styled scratch….

    • No, it is made for filling a crack in between the laminations.

  • Kind of worked on my bullseye chip, made it less obvious. Probably works better for star chips though. YMMV. Would buy again.

  • +1

this seemed the pick of the 'how-to' videos that I could find. As mentioned: more than 10min work but it should save a bunch of money and reinforce the damaged glass.

    • +1

If you watch "Watch JR Go" on youtube, he swears by the Rain-X repair kit.

  • Ordered one.
My chip is quite small so hopefully it will work

Sold and Fulfilled by Amazon UK for $17.96. Would much rather do that anyway

International Delivery : get it by Wednesday, Jun 29 - Tuesday, July 12

Clown college? Pfft you can’t eat that

  • +2

I expect this to turn this [windscreen] (https://thumbs.dreamstime.com/b/broken-car-windshield-damage…
) into a brand new one. If it doesn't do it, I'll spam 1-star ratings on Amazon until it fixes it.

Seriously though… Some of these Amazon reviews are out of hand. This guy gave the product a 1-star review without even testing the product:

Comes from the Channel Islands….. eventually.
How the product works I have yet to determine but not happy with the vendor.

In my opinion, it doesn't matter where the product is from, the reviews should be specifically related to the product itself.

  • +1

Would this work on those safety type house windows? Mine has a 20c size that got chipped off, found the chip, would be great if this would seal it back in lol

    • it will probably "glue" the chip in place, but will not leave you with a clear "invisible repair"

  • OP out of curiosity, how much was O’Brien? Was it better to just get a replacement than have that mob fix the chip?

    • Couldn’t tell you. But I’m sure it would be at least $100 - $150 factoring a call out

    • Used them once around 14 years ago, was $120 for a small (10 cent size) star chip, can’t imagine it’d be cheaper now.
Their ‘fix’ wasn’t perfect either, as I could still tell a chip used to be there and has been filled up. Will test this product on my current car and see if there’s a difference.

    • +3

I called them the other week for a small star chip and was told $190 if I bring it in to their shop or $200 if they came to me. After querying the high price the sales rep 'spoke to his manager' and dropped it to $160. I booked in a spot at the time but later cancelled after doing my own research and finding a product similar to this. Ironically the same sales rep called me back to ask why I cancelled while I was at autobarn looking for the repair kit and told them I found someone cheaper.

    • Local windscreen shop for me was around $40-50

  • Where I live I'm lucky if I don't get a chip every few months. Thanks OP.

This stuff is great. I have not actually used it on a car, but I have fixed many iPhone screens that have been cracked or chipped, absolutely amazing.

    • Sarcasm or actually works? I would have thought It got into all the bits it shouldn't…

      • +3

No, dead set, works like a charm. You can still see the cracks when the phone is off or locked, but once the screen comes on, nothing. I wouldn’t use it near a button like iPhone 7 has as it might stick to the button, but otherwise it’s great.

I use to have photos, but deleted them ages ago, absolutely no cracks to be seen and does not affect the touch either. My nephew smashes his screen, looked like a spider web. He couldn’t use it one bit as it wouldn’t recognise the touch. Use this and bingo, worked like it was a new one.

The only thing it didn’t fix was the cracks on the edge as it’s not a putty so would just run down the side.

  • +2

I bought a similar kit from aliexpress for $2.50 to fix a 5cent coin sized crack. Almost unnoticeable.

  • -3

I would rather trust a professional to do this and with insurance its free of change a cracked winshield to replace so why would I bother getting this.
This seems like an American BS thing to do.

    • +3

You would rather pay 190/200 as was reported above than do it yourself for less than 20 bucks and an hour? Sir, this is OzBargain, you may be lost?

      • +2

costs me nothing to get my windshield replaced I noticed you didn't read.

        • just double checking that you don't have an excess to pay, and your insurance premiums don't go up after making a claim? Please advise who your insurer is as I want to sign up :-)

          • @Logical: no excess, 2 free per year.

            • +3

@kungfuman: If its no excess, that means its already costed into your insurance.

              • @ATangk: He likely paid for the optional extra

        • Why bother posting? This is clearly for all the people that don't pay for that option.

  • +4

Will it fix the chip on my shoulder?

  • Any one getting any ? happy to bundle to save on shipping … help a melbourne brother out!! :) thanks in advance!

  • +1

don't screw the end thing in too far or it might just make the crack way bigger… or so I hear

Did anyone receive this?? Mine got returned to Amazon without me actually getting it.

    • Same here, few days ago I was notified it was shipped out and now I have Amazon telling me that I actually returned it and they will process a refund. That's some weird stuff right there.

      • +1

        Same

  • im thinking the price was too good and they just cancelled the order. Amazon AU wont help me because its a UK item.

    • Agreed

  • Refunded too! Strange!

  • My order has apparently been passed on to Australia Post from APG, I have an AusPost tracking number, but it's still marked as pending.

    • Ended up back with Amazon and refunded also.

  • +1 on the shipped and now refunded strangeness …..

  • Tried to order again and refunded again…

    • Same here!
