Was looking for a Chromebook but for a similar price I came across this HP laptop.

A laptop has it's advantages compared to a Chromebook.

  • Can remove the 2 x 4GB RAM and upgrade - no/yes?

    • +2

Specifications say it has two 4GB DIMMS @ 3200mts
      https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c08044002

Plus the usual budget 1080p display with 45% NTSC color and 250 nit brightness

For $169 extra you can also grab the Nuc M15 which might be preferable if you don't like the plastic build of consumer-grade HP laptops.

      • Yeah - figured that by the time I go to that expense on a soft laptop, I may as well buy something else.
Didn't expect any great deal from Gerry - but then again I could buy an upmarket toaster with the gift card.

  • +1

Gerry G bOi warming up for EOFY sales lol.

  • if you can upgrade to 16gb this is a great deal. This is like the first time i have seen i7 for under $1k let alone $798. Unless I am missing something important which makes this not a great deal

    • +1

250 nit screen with 45% NTSC

      • yeah but is that it, still seems like a great deal…wait have they stopped selling i3 yet, if yes then it would makes sense that prices for i7 being under 1k would be normalised soon if not already

Is AMd processor any good in comparision to Intel, is Intel processor the Rolce Royce in the industry?

    • +1

In this case: overall i7 is better but this AMD is slightly better at multi core and also battery life than the i7-1195G7

    • +1

The Ryzen 5 5500U is a Zen 2 part, which essentially means AMD is selling its Ryzen 5 4600U under a new name. Despite that you are getting a CPU core count advantage over the 4-core i7, plus it's on a smaller lithography node so power usage is lower

      So the major difference:
      (7nm vs 10nm)
      6 core vs 4 core
GPU performance possibly better but it will depend on the memory speed and whether it's running single / dual channel.

single thread perf on the Core i7 is better because of a higher turbo boost.

  • Excellent thanks for your input, will help me to make a good choice.
Also, is chrome book does excatly like a laptop except it deosn't have micrsoft package. my understadnig correct?

A Chromebook has similar hardware to a normal Windows laptop. They sometimes run the same type of processors (e.g Intel) , but often they are using the same type of ARM processor as a typical Android smartphone.

The biggest difference is the operating system. ChromeOS is designed to be light and easy to use for newbies, so it is generally less flexible than your standard Windows or MacOS.

  • Any way to redeem the same Giftcard in the same transaction? I read the T&C's which are standard. JB once let me do that so wondering if HN would do the same.

    • Tempting deal but to be honest I wouldn't buy from Hardly Normal even if they let me use the GC against the same purchase because I don't like Gerry Harvey.

  • Gift card is not redeemable for cash and cannot be used in the transaction in which it is issued.
