    • This is the Intel brand. Used PCIe 4 SSD, LPDDR4x 4266MHz Ram. not too many notebooks come with this specs at that price point.

    • Not sure if what you feel like is a valid enough reason to down vote the deal.

Listen bud my feelings are valid and let me tell you why this laptop is not the best value for price. Firstly, almost 2 year old cpu and on top of that a quad core (yes quad cores are totally fine but not for this price range). 2nd, not even 1 tb of storage (I am ready to forgive the cpu if the storage was 1 tb). 3rd Forget a dedicated gpu like an entry level one like mx450 or gtx1650 (considering a 15.6 inch at this price point and yes I am aware its an intel nuc but I am comparing other 15.6 inch laptops at this price point). Lastly, other shortcomings aside for this price point, the screen isn't too bad but not the best.

Thumbs up for the decent ram, pcie4 storage and really good build quality. that's pretty much all it has going for it. This would a great deal for 1k - 1.1k max. Lastly, I would rather shell out 200-300 more to get a newer alder lake based laptop. Or wait a little bit for more mid tier alder lake i5s (and yes 12 cores :o) to hit the market for way better value.

Edit - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/697201 things like these exit btw and they are real deals and even better this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/697541

        • Yes, your feelings are valid (and I agree with your points). I didn't say your feelings weren't valid, I said that they are not a valid reason to down vote the deal but the 2 deals you have linked in the above comment do count.

For context, I bought this laptop a few weeks back and I reckon it's better value than the laptop in this deal but that deal has expired.

You chose to omit the fact that this laptop IS TOUCHSCREEN, has really nice I/O, has no dgpu (that's a con if you care about battery life), the igpu iris xe is actually REALLY good considering it can run any esports title you throw at it at 1080p with varying settings. Not to mention it has a samsung 980 pro (which is really easy to upgrade if you want 1tb), one of the fastest ssds that money can buy, the cpu is not even close to aged it is really fast.

I've been looking for a laptop with this exact spec for a long time since I wanted something fast but not with a dgpu so I get battery life, good i/o and something I can actually afford.

Also you linked an MSI prestige and a Lenovo Ideapad, consider reliability lmao and the fact that the iris xe igpu is faster than an mx450

"15.6" Full HD (1920x1080) IPS. Low resolution for 15.6" screen."

The pixel density should be more than enough for its size. Not a con IMO, but it will be a bonus if it is a 2k screen.

I've been dealing with scaling for the last 12mo or so…and it's not worth it lol. I'm wishing I could just go back to no scaling. Especially when you're swapping between scaling% for laptop screen and dock monitors.

      • +8

I have been singing this song for years and years, but majority of people don't listen :)

for a laptop, FullHD is the best resolution in Windows, the way Windows is and has been for a loooong time

even on my 17" gaming machine I don't want any higher resolution. 1920x1080 is plenty

reason? zero scaling. ability to run Windows at 100% (no scaling) is a blessing that shouldn't be taken for granted

higher res screens in laptops has negative impact on battery life, too. it's a laptop, right? you'd want it to last as long as possible on battery power

yes there are people who might need higher res screens in laptops, they know who they are, however they don't buy consumer grade laptops either.

so for us normal consumers, high res screens are a marketing gimmick, nothing more. trust me, text on FullHD without scaling looks better than on QHD with 125% scaling

        • +1

I disagree on the text point. After using a hidpi screen on my laptop for some years, I wouldn't want to go back. Text especially is much sharper and clearer, and generally more comfortable to read. It's certainly not just a marketing gimmick.

Fractional scaling (in windows at least) hasn't presented many if any problems over 4 years for me personally.

Each to their own though. The point about battery life is valid, and for different uses e.g. gaming very high resolutions make less sense.

          • @snep: I haven't seen an example of hi dpi screen that made text any clearer to read on a laptop. what resolution / screen size do you have? genuinely curious

            • @shabaka: Currently using a surface book, 13.5" 3000x2000 with a 3:2 aspect ratio. So close to double the PPI of 15.6" 1080p.

I previously used a 13" 1080p, and before that a 900p 14", and while the former was pretty good, the surface was noticeably better compared to both.

That said, I don't think there would be benefits to going any higher than that in terms of PPI, except perhaps a little extra to get 2x scaling at a more reasonable size.

              • @snep: I briefly had a 1st gen surface book, can't say I was impressed with the screen - things might have changed since then, what are we, up to gen3?

back then people were rather happy to hand those in in exchange for a conventional X1 carbon 14" with FullHD

because scaling and remote desktop just don't work well together, also some of the applications we used just didn't scale well

but I accept that yes high DPI work well for some category of users who are lucky not to use applications that are badly affected by scaling

for me though, FullHD is the safe bet

        • 1080 is a bit limiting tbh. The vertical should be at least 1200, makes a noticeable difference.

          • @brawndo: that's about screen ratio, not dpi. I do like 4:3 and 16:10 screen, I find 16:9 too limiting

but majority of consumer models use that ratio, so that's the reality for now

my solution for this is to have the task bar on the right. horizontal space is expendable, vertical isn't

which is why I am stuck on windows 10, since 11 doesn't have this feature ffs

For this model btw it comes with an oem 980 pro 500gb

    NUC? It's a laptop not a NUC??!

  • I am deciding between this an a M1 Macbook Air for programming

    I can't decide!!

    • Same boat here…

    • Not a Mac fan, but I know from my use of mys sons MAC with an M1 that battery life is amazing - beats all the top of the line laptops I've used (X1 carbon, elitebook) more than twice the hrs usage

  • PLUSTH10 doesn't work with SAVEMAY. How do I get both discounts?

    PLUSTH10 is expired and PLUSMAY1 doesn't stack.

  • Ordered on May 3, tracking number added a whole week later and then nothing. After contacting Bing Lee several times with no-one able to provide an update on the status, I escalated the case to eBay, who processed a full refund. Buyer beware.
