  • not even worth buying from MSY
better to pay a bit more and not have to worry about warranty and customer service (or lack thereof)

    • +3

Majority of the bits from T1 vendors (Asus, Gigabyte, MSI) you can direct RMA to the manufacturer anyways, far easier then going through MSY if you ever needed to.

      • +2

that and the competition and consumer act 2010

A true Ozbargainer will get it price matched at OfficeWorks and get an extra 5% off :D

A recent counter-anecdote, for what little it's worth:

WD expected me to ship a bad ten month old 2TB HD to Malaysia, at my own expense ($26), and wait several weeks for a (possibly refurbished) replacement.

So instead I took it back to MSY Ultimo with my invoice and printout of the WD DataLifeGuard and chkdsk test results, anticipating a battle. After the usual long queue wait, the guy behind the counter checked the serial numbers and replaced it on the spot with a brand new one - no questions asked.

Actually I had a similar experience. The ethernet port on a motherboard I bought from them died about 9 months after I had bought it. Went in with my whole machine (MSY Canberra), demoed it to the guy, he tried updating the firmware which didn't fix it, so gave me a new one. Was pretty easy.

    • +1

I too have had horrid experiences with them especially in warranty and customer service, so very hesitant to deal with them even at these prices (auburn store). Im sure others have not had the same experience but you have been warned.

      • +1

I have never had a problem with MSY. My work buys all our computers from there, As helpful as any other computer store, Answer phones and reply to emails. It does help if you know what your after though.

        • +2

Which store, Clayton never answers the phone. I have returned a few faulty things to MSY and they were the easiest I have ever had for PC parts. No issues here.

      • +1

I have been to Clayton, Cheltenham, Slacks Creek, Indooroopilly, Brendale & Ipswich stores and the customer service had always been excellent…I also have returned a few items to them with no problems either!

Newbie guide to shopping at MSY

Old article but still pretty relevant. Service at my local MSY (Balcatta, WA) is excellent though.

Anyway, not really a deal since it's clearance stock and they have very low stock (seems like just 1 or 2) and at certain stores only.

      • +1

Ditto. Varsity Lakes store has always been fantastic. Hell they even let me return a change of mind purchase once. Have had no issue claiming several items under warranty.

      • +3

        Balcatta's my local store too.

They seem to an exception to the MSY rule from what I hear and see; they answer the phone, they accept RMAs/returns, staff are moderately friendly and speak English, and they even quote their stock levels correctly.

I remember they over-charged my card once because the transaction showed up as not going through when in actuality it did and they happily refunded me the extra $50 no problems the next day.

    • +3

My local MSY was fined $55000 [55k] for not compying with consumer law. [warranty support etc]

A few other branches were fined similar amounts.

      • +2

that was because of what they did in 2010. they should have changed their practices since then

I had a hitachi 2.5" HDD die on me the other day (i only bought it in april).

I had heard bad things about returning to MSY, i went in, the only hassle was i couldn't find the receipt, and i thought we bought it in march not april but they checked the drive confirmed it faulty, eventually used the serial number from the drive to locate the purchase info.

The refunded the drive cost as unfortunately they didn't have any of the same in stock, so i got the next one up, which cost me $14 above the refunded price, all in all quite a pleasant experience, and i would not hesitate going back i always get good service from them.

    • I've actually had great experience with returns at MSY, Altona Nth. I bought 8Gb RAM from them installed it but I was too lazy to do a Memtest. After 1 month of using my newly build PC, I started getting more BSOD. Finally, I did a memtest and found out the RAM was faulty. I took a photo of the test, showed it to the seller. He gave me the full refund which I used to buy a different brand of RAM. From Gskill to Patriot.

No hazzles, immediate service. The experience is no different from refunds at a big Myer store.

Link pls to the 256gb ssd

    • Look in the NSW auburn, tab no 8, its there. Apparently there is more then 1 in stock according to several other members who checked earlier today.

      • +1

        Went there today…. SOLD OUT!

        • +2

          That should be MSY's slogan

        • I bought that SSD for $120 yesterday around 1.30pm.
It's patriot torqx m28. Not the fastest SSD but can't compaint for tht price. And now it's running in my Alienware :)

There is another SSD 128 or 120gb for $85. If some of you still want it. I didn't check if they have any in stock though.

And just a quick note. Some of these clearance item are only listed on the homepage not on the PDF. So you have to show sales guy the homepage to get that clearance price.
Oh and I want to post this yesterday but there was only one of them and I already bought it. So i thought there was no point posting.

      • Their website is bullshit. Their system is bullshit. Ive checked their website and called to make sure they had a product in stock and when I got there I was told they don’t have it and they said some crap about someone buying it 5 minutes before

        • How long did it take you to get to MSY after ringing?

        • less than 30 minutes

        • If you are talking about that SSD then it was me who bought it. I was gonna place online order but I can't do it so I went straight there. It was worth the trip

        • Its was not a ssd and it wasnt yesterday. It was awhile back and it was an unpopular item. Thats why i prefer to go to arc or pcdiy now. Their inventory system is much more accurate

  • If its a clearance list you are referring to, dnt have high hopes for stock ! good luck !

  • Not one bargain listed… No deal…

  • +2

    dont bother,
    theres only 1 of everything.

from experience the last time they had 5 of something i wanted,
it was OUT OF STOCK as soon as the ad came up.

Unless you wana go for a joy ride i wouldnt waste my time..

      • +1

to be fair though, there is alot of stock listed, just not in huge quantities of particular items.

        • from the looks of it, centrecom's carpark sale was better.

        • that is true,
but this would probably be worse than the time MWAVE had their stupid linksys promotion.
at least mwave had possibly more than 5.

the only difference now is that we have learned :)to tread careful

How to buy? Need to go to store tomorrow ?

  • +1

Saw it on OCAU as well

    Things to note:

    1) Those that have a QTY of 1 doesn't necessarily mean that it is 1, could have 5 or so
    2) Some people have already phone ordered(how lucky) the ssd's, gpus, mobos, etc
    3) Look at the Clearance, not the regular stock

  • +1

The SSD's on special are sold out in Auburn. I went there today and they had none in stock.

    • That SSD went to me. And the sales guy told me that it was discontinued model.

  • +2

    No soup for you

    • And no no vote for you - take stock of the guidelines on voting please

      • +1

I'm assuming this was a revoked neg vote by ozpete - the guidelines pretty clearly state a neg needs to be accompanied by a valid reason.

  • I won't comment on stock level as I know how they are.. But to be fair, I've bought more than a handful of stuff from these folks. Thankfully, I haven't had negative customer service experiences… yet.

  • Only thing worth it is the SSDs, but that's all gone.

    • Some of the motherboards are pretty decent for Sandy / Ivy if you don't need the few new features of Z77.
      2gb 6950 / 6970 might be ok

      • +1

the gtx480 price is also really good, quite a few awesome sets of ram hidden inside, some 2x2gb gskill 17000's which clock like a champ and a set of 3x2gb sector 5's.

  • Most of the products have (EOL) tag at the end, which I believe are End Of Life products. They even have a 8800GT in stock, is that new?

    • 8800GT is a oldie.

      I think its 8800GT > 9800 GT > 260/HD 5770

      • -1

I think should be 4 - 5 years ago… How about the warranty?

        • Should be no problem with warranty. If it broke and they(whats the brand?) can't fix it/replace it with same model they probably give you a newer card.
          Matters what brand tho.

Not sure why you would want a old card.

        • +1

actually if it breaks…you get a new gen card ;) coz they just dont have the stock anymore

  • +1

I got a Patriot PYRO 120Gb SSD for $122 from the Balcatta (WA) store. Pretty good deal IMHO. Next cheapest price on StaticICE is $150. According to their website this ssd is still in stock there.

  • Picked up the supposed last 3TB Hitachi drive for $150 from Auburn yesterday. I consider it a bargain and if it dies I'll just RMA it straight to the manufacturer. Never had any problems with stuff I've bought from MSY yet (touch wood)

  • Heads up for anyone after the ASUS P8Z68-V from the ultimo store, even though its listed as in stock on the website they don't actually have it. I was there this morning and ended up buying a ASUS sabertooth z77 instead.

  • I would have liked getting a AsRock Z68-Professional board for $70 from the clayton branch, which is almost halve what they normally sell it at. But not enough to fight in a long stinkin que for the remote chance.

  • Went to the Slacks Creek branch after lunch today to see if they had any SSD left. Wasn't expecting much but scored a 60GB ssd for $50 and some other items. Quite happy really, the guy said they sold quite a few SSDs today on special, so I am guessing the quantity=1 thing is just to set low expectations.
