MSI Delta 15 A5EFK Black 15.6" Ryzen 9 Radeon 6700M Gaming Laptop $2023 + Delivery ($0 VIC C&C) @ Scorptec

60

Seems to be $2,600-$2,900 at all other retailers. Wouldn't recommend at those prices but for this it seems a good deal.

    NBC review.

I haven't seen this machine in the wild, but sounds great on paper, with the following comments:
    - keyboard is single zone RGB only
    - keyboard isn't mechanical
    - ports selection isn't stellar, also they are not far enough apart I would say.
    - upgrades are complicated (looking at the NBC review, the bastards sealed off most of the internals, MSI is notorious for making upgrades hard, one way or another)
    - NVMe are gen3, not 4 (not critical though)

so all in all not bad for the price, delivering 3070 like performance if you don't care much about RT or DLSS. no miracles on noise or thermals front either, but you're getting a metal build.

to be honest though, I don't think taking off and replacing that thermal sealing material would be too hard for upgrades. maybe NBC were too scared to do that for a change

  • How would this compare to the Gigabyte 15P XD version Intel 11800 / 16GB / 1 TB / 15.6 FHD 240 Hz / RTX 3070P for roughly the same price?

I just picked one of those up and am trying to work out whether I should have buyer's remorse. Here's how I see it:

      Gigabyte pros:

      • Faster CPU (at least for gaming)
      • Slightly faster GPU, with DLSS/RT to boot
      • Proper RGB keyboard, with numpad
      • Much better I/O (HDMI 2.1 instead of 2.0, Thunderbolt 4 instead of plain USB-C, SD card reader)
      • Larger battery (99Wh, as big as it gets)
      • PCIe 4.0 SSD instead of PCIe 3.0
      • Easier to upgrade

      MSI pros:

      • Aluminium build instead of plastic
      • Lighter
      • Normal webcam placement (the Gigabyte's is atrocious, worse than even old Dell XPS models)
      • Probably less bad software? Gigabyte Control Center is buggy as all hell

If you have any questions about the Gigabyte, let me know. Overall I'm loving it so far.

      • Mind sharing where you got the Gigabyte from and how much did you pay for it? My biggest concern regarding gaming laptops is the amount of heat generated and the fan noise. Can you please shed some light on these factors?

Note that the 11800H is not very power efficient and uses about 17 to 41% more power than a Ryzen 9. If you are going to be plugged into a power point most of the time that is OK. If you want some form of portability and battery life the Ryzen 9 is a better option, especially for productivity.

        • I bought it from JW Computers via Kogan Marketplace (because I had some Kogan credit) for $1999 + shipping, but would recommend going via someone like Scorptec once they have stock in a couple of days.

I had the same concerns, particularly regarding fan noise (since I like playing with speakers over headphones) and so far I'm pretty impressed with the 15P. It seems to have a pretty impressive cooling system, and while the fans aren't particularly quiet, they're not whiny, so it's not a bothering sound. Last night I was playing Halo MCC in bed (a worst case scenario for the cooling) for an extended period of time, with the laptop's built in speakers and was not bothered by the fan noise at all.

The Gigabyte is currently available for 1899 from on Ebay

    • link?

      • Believe it is sold out at that price. There was one available this morning.

  • Which one would you pick between the MSI ($2023), Gigabyte Aorus ($1899) & Asus ROG Strix ($1699)?
