Can anyone who has sonos one as rear speakers comment on the surround sound? I have a beam (not an arc) and just wondering if it's any good or am i better off starting from scratch and getting a samsung 950

We use two Sonos 1s as rears paired to a Playbar and a sub. They work really well together with the Playbar, and it's just magical how the Sonos app handles the speaker group. I have them on rear stands that I bought from Amazon and they plug into a power socket behind the couch, so there aren't any speaker cables running down the living room.

If your situation changes, you can also de-couple the 1s and use them as individual speakers or as a stereo pair, and flexibility is probably the major benefit of the Sonos system.

+1 they’re quite good as rears in the surround setup. Adds a lot of low end to the whole setup too because the 1s seem to be a lot better on the low end than the beam. Really easy to setup in the Sonos app as well.

Airplay treats it as one speaker and it works really well too for just music.

The strength of sonos is their software. Out of Samsung and Sonos, the sonos would have the better software. Hardware wise they are capable enough speakers, albeit a little expensive for what they are, but the software is where they add value.

I have the beam and two sonos ones for my bedroom TV. They might lack a little bit of bass so you may consider adding the sub (kind of expensive). If you went the full sized soundbar you might have avoided the possible need for the sub. I would rather sonos than Samsung, the products do hold up for a long time with their software.

If you decided to go for another soundbar later, the sonos ones are still a good stereo option anyway which is nice. As for this price, it's not amazing but maybe this is the new world we live in with inflation being what it is. Sonos are pretty tight with their pricing so you may not get much cheaper. Better than RRP.

Another vote for yes, we’ve had a play bar/sub and 2 x play ones for years in our lounge, before that the original play 5’s, play 3 going back 15 years and still working, also have this one SL on our back patio.
      Never had a issue.

      F Samsung lol.

      • Well I'm in the team as well, have 1s as part of my surround system and it's GREAT, I'm not an audiophile but I do like good sound, and I can say I'm very happy with it. I have this set up for at least 3 years and still going strong (2 x 1s, 1 x Play Bar and 1 x Sub).
Also I have a couple of 1s around the house.

Anyone with a Sonos system will tell you it's the only way to go. Incredible sound and excellent software.
I have the Arc, the Sub, and two play 1s as the rear surrounds.

    • +1

I got a pair of Sonos 1 for Rear, Arc and Sub
standard 5.1 setup suit me just fine, no wiring, good apps support

my whole house are full of Sonos, every room has at least 1 Sonos or Sonos pairs plus Sonos Move if I want to take my
      music out in the garden.

If you just want to use them as rears and nothing else. Have a look at the symfonisk line at ikea. They pair with Sonos stuff. The two bookshelves won't cost much more then just 1 Sonos one SL. The sound doesn't go as loud but for rears it should be fine.

They also offer lamp based or even picture frame based options which cost more.

  • Would a couple of these work with my samsung TV? Without the sound bar. How would I connect them to the TV?

    And how would they sound?

    • I don't think they have optical in so you probably couldn't use these for that purpose. They sound decent but you could get something better that wasn't sonos if all you want is TV stereo sound.

    • No they will not, the bar gives you the optical audio port to connect to your TV.

    • +1

You might be able to connect your TV to the line in on a Sonos Port, but it would be an expensive way to do it. The cost of the two Ones and the Port would be similar to just buying the sound bar instead.

  • Anybody tried connecting them and using them along with Google nest, do they sync well? I tried syncing my megaboom with the best speakers and it didn't really work

    • I haven't but I have been unable to use a Sonos Arc and google nest speakers to play music at the same time. I assumed because the Arc had google built-in it would work but it doesn't.

    • Sonos won't sync with a google cast group

      • +1

There's no reason it couldn't, but Sonos are anticompetitive patent trolls ;)

(To be clear, jjcf is right, and they won't work together)

  • Ordered, I'm a sucker for BT speakers! Thanks

    • +7

Be warned. If this is your first Sonos speaker you will probably end up with a whole house full lol

      • I can vouch for this!

      • +1

Sonos is like Apple once you use them, there is no going back but with Sonos you keep finding reasons to buy more and more speakers, I got total 12 Sonos in my house

    • +8

Just as an FYI, these aren’t Bluetooth. They work on your local network instead.

      • Ah didn't realise. Oh well.

        • Don’t get me wrong, they are great if they’re what you want. As others have mentioned, Sonos does have a couple of newer portable ones that are hybrid local network and Bluetooth (the Move and Roam).

    • +1

You need to get Sonos Move if you want Bluetooth plus Wifi
at home you use wifi, outside the home you use bluetooth

Get 950 or wait for 2022 Samsung model?

  • +1

How's the Dolby atmos with these, with the beam2
I have the standalone beam2 and the atmos isn't great without the surrounds.

  • Tbh I only find sonos good for listening to music. The wifi lag not syncing up with visuals semi-irritates me, when watching something.

    • +1

My soundbar is connected by ethernet and works fine

  • Just commenting to let people know (because someone let me know in a past post), ikea make a Sonos branded speaker with (I believe) the same internals for around half the price. I’ve used them as my rear surrounds. The blend in well mounted to my wall and sound great. Better than paying full price for me.

    • They used to have the bookshelf symfonisk for $149, but it's just gone up in price to $199.

  • +1

I think Ikea just quietly stopped selling the bookshelf speaker. (Which was going to be my next purchase) I can see the lamps and picture frame style but the bookshelf is no longer on their website

    • +1

Still available in store as of Friday. Seems like they're clearing out Gen 1 SYMFONISK bookshelf stock in order to make way for the Gen 2.

  • +1

I have the bookshelf symfonisks as rears. They sound great but I have not tried anything different.

I went the 2x symfonisk for $149ea so I could afford the sub. The sub is amazing, I picked up (v1) sub for $420 from crime converters Adelaide.

  • Lots of other Sonos products on sale too https://www.selby.com.au/brands/sonos.html

  • can confirm these are great speakers for their size n price.
Got 2 of them for $490 in december to pair with my Arc and its a totally new surround experience now for music as well as movies.

    • +1

This might seem like a dumb question but do you need to be sitting on your couch to enjoy the music experience? Most setups are centered around your couch and for listening to music I most likely will be walking around the house.

      • You do get better 360 sound if sitting but for me its fine even while roaming around the house.

  • Cheaper here:
    https://doddsby.com/product/sonos-one-sl-microphone-free-wir…

Not sure if website is legit or not though..

    • name sounds dodgy ;)

  • +1

I can vouch for the one SL.
Have 2 X one SL paired up with arc and sub. They sound amazing.

  • +2

What stands are good with these?

  • $265 for me
