Microsoft just reduced the price on a few laptops, probably clearing out stock to make way for the new incoming models (6900hx & 12th gen respectively).
Pretty attractive pricing from what I can see - just ordered myself a Blade 14 :)

The following look like good value to me:

Blade 14 ~ $2,319.20

Blade 15 ~ $2,639.20

  • how come R9 is cheaper than i7?

    • +3

it's not the only difference, it's different models

    • +2

It's not R9, it's the size. From what I recalled, 14 inch memory is soldered on board, but 15 inch you can upgrade RAM.

      • Correct

    • +5

There's quite a bit different between them, mostly in favor of the Blade 15 on paper depending on use-case.
      - 14" vs 15" screen
      - 165Hz vs 240Hz refresh rate
      - MUC switch on the Blade 15 allows toggle between on-board/dedicated GPU
      - 61.6Wh vs 65Wh battery
      - TB4 on the Blade 15
      - Additional USB-A port on the Blade 15
      - User upgradeable RAM on the Blade 15
      - 2nd M.2 slot on the Blade 15
      - PCI-E 3.0 vs 4.0 M.2 support
      - Ethernet port on the Blade 15
      - Larger cooler thermal mass on the Blade 15
      - SD card slot on the Blade 15.
There'd be more to compare but for around $300 those differences may be worth the jump. The 2nd M.2 slot is huge for anyone who needs storage and doesn't want to lug around an external. Bear in mind they're only intended to take single-sided SSDs, but you can cram in a double-sided drive if you're okay with the tension on the PCB.

I have a 3080 equipped Blade 14 from launch and love it, I only really miss having TB4 dock options but the smaller size was something I wanted. The Blade 14 (just) fits into the Razer 13" sleeve.

      • +1

no 2nd M2 slots on blade 14 is annoying… but i can see why its nice to lug around a 14" laptop

      • Quick note: the ethernet port is only available on the base model, the 15" here is the advanced model (without ethernet).

I actually ordered the 15", but quickly cancelled in favor of the 14". Despite having more thermal mass (as you mentioned), something about the 14", be it the Ryzen chip or newer thermal design results in cooler temps. That and the smaller size won me over… Though I might kick myself once I get it, being limited to 16GB memory

        • +1

Good pick-up. If you havn't got it already, I recommend changing the performance profile to lower the temps. I think by default they ship with either performance mode on or some other rubbish that pegs the CPU at max turbo and throttles it (on wall-power). There's also a registry edit that can aid with this. I play Ark on a 3840x1600 monitor and the CPU temps usually sit around 70-80C instead of the original 95-100C, better frames due to no throttling funnily enough.

          • @NEO-R26B: Thanks for the heads up. :)

I had a Blade 15 a few years ago, which had a weird fan noise issue. From memory I had to disable the touchpad or something lol.

        • Non upgradable memory nor provide 32 GB RAM version is the only reason I couldn't pull my trigger. I personally find 16 GB RAM is extremely limited.

        • Whats the TGP on 3070 on the 14 btw?

      • I have the Razer Blade 14 and I love it but I don't really use it at home. I wanted an ultrabook/gaming laptop hybrid and it was the closest thing I could find and its brilliant. I spend at least 1 weekend a month interstate and I wanted something that was light on the plane and I could remote work with as well as game with for a few hours over that weekend.

Pro's over other gaming laptops of the same size are the features that make it more like an ultrabook. When not gaming it has a great touch pad, webcam with windows hello, battery life, screen, "premium macbook like looks and feel", etc.

If portability was not a factor and I was going to have 1 single device to do everything on I'd probably go the 15 though because of all the above. (my last gaming laptop a decade ago weighed 10kgs with the power brick so at least those days are in the past!).

        • What kind of battery life do you get I see between 5-9 hrs being mention for light tasks

  • Thanks for your reply gents,

i'd prefer to go with legion rather than razer, what do you think? and maybe i'd go with X1 Extreme rather than both.

    • The legion might have a better chance of being more reliable (Razer's QC is questionable). However Razer's slim/smaller style can't really be beat in the gaming laptop space - and assuming the QC is okay on the unit you receive; they're built extremely well too.

  • Alright gents, what do y'all think about the MSI Sword 15 i7-12700H/16GB/512GB/RTX 3050 $1359

    • I believe design and stylish are critical factors for people who consider choosing Razer. Price is the least considering option.

      • Personally it's more about the build/size. I don't want neon green LED's or an RGB keyboard.
But I do like the Apple/Mac style build in a Windows gaming laptop :)

The MSI looks like an OK price, but you'll probably find the 3050 is a bit lacking (depending on what games you play).

  • I honestly do not get why razer laptops are so expensive.

    • There's quite a premium on them, but that's mostly because there's no/little competition in the slim & neat (almost 'macbook' style) gaming laptop space :)

  • I had Razer 17 Pro (2080 Super, 300hz FHD) and it's a great machine

however mine was plagued by annoying issues, support was hopeless, and I didn't enjoy the keyboard

since then I got Aorus 17g (the one I posted earlier, 11800H / 3070 / 300hz FHD) and it's in the same league with Razer 17 with its black full metal build, but I like it much more, and had no issues with it so far (have had it for a bit longer than the Blade)

I would say I am not going to give Blade another go until they get a better keyboard

    • What annoying issues you got? Besides kb annoying you, any battery bloating?

      • sound output had annoying static on battery power. also screen would flicker randomly while on battery power, unless running at 60hz

there was something else but I can't remember already

  • Asking a question about razer blade out of curiosity.
Bought the 2020 razer blade 15.6 inch 2080s 300hz model from razer ebay for $1,999.00.
Razer messaged me a couple of days later and said the stock was damaged and they offered 2021 mid razer blade 15.6 inch 3070 360 hz model with 11th intel chip instead.
Could anyone tell me if this is a good deal or not?
I am new to gaming laptop thingsā€¦

    • That's a fair substitute, they'd perform on par with each other for gaming. The 3070 should pull in front 5% in synthetic benchmarks. You gain all the incremental architecture updates on the newer model
      - 360Hz vs 300Hz refresh rate screen
      - 2ms vs 3ms screen response time
      - HDMI2.1 vs HDMI 2.0b
      - TB4 vs TB3
      - DDR4 3200Mhz vs DDR4 2933 Mhz
      - 1080p vs 720p webcam
      - MUX switch on the 2021
      - Slightly better Intel onboard GPU
      - Additional M.2 slot on the 2021.
      - PCI-E 4.0 vs PCI-E 3.0 M.2 support
If you're getting the replacement without extra charge I'd take it as a win.

      • Thank you for the detailed response sir!
I didnt know the newer model comes with 2ms screen response time… that is a very nice bonus as i will predominantly using the device for FPS games such as Overwatch :)

  • I have what is most likely a very dumb question, but does anyone know any ways to get access to a comparable deal to this for the 14 or 15 inch Blade. Kicking myself I didn't pull the trigger a week ago…
