The thing that sucks about even PS Plus is I buy a game and a few months later it's included.

I don't really play multiplayer, so I probably don't need the service.

Alot of games used can be had for $25-45, I guess you have to work out long term the benefits and if the next tier up can be bought at a discounted rate.

    • +2

There is also the re-sale value of actually owning games + the need to not have to buy the additional HDD needed for the games you may want to replay etc..

Still seems ok, but yeah considering the amount of games I get through per year and that I wait until games go on sale before I bite, unsure how much I'm actually saving.

  • +6

I hope they add the expiry date for the games.

The thing I hate the most about Game Pass is the not knowing when games leave the service, two weeks advance notice is simply not enough

It’s obviously a tactic Microsoft employ to keep you coming back weekly and impulse buying games you can’t finish in time

  • Sweet list of games!
    Hurry up 23/6.

  • will wait for the ps plus to go on sale.
otherwise happy to just buy a disc version of the games i'd like to keep.

but this setup is perfect for the digital version of PS5. one stop shop. 😊

    • Or those that don’t keep games. I generally but physical and week after I finish it.

  • Is there any chance Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart will be on it, it's a year old game. Or should I just buy it now

  • Would love a command and conquer game from PS2 or something like that!

    • Yeah, I want this and sack boy

  • +1

Man my ps subscription expired, should I buy one now or wait?

    • It won't make a difference, unless you need to use it right now

    • Might be some new member promos to bump up subscriber numbers after launch (Xbox has had some crazy $1 offers when they want number boosts). I'd wait if you're not using it, the service isn't going anywhere

  • +6

Hmm, really bad timing with inflation and all…

I've been a customer for about a decade now but it looks like I'll be dropping out altogether (my sub expires in a few months) - I'll miss my extensive Plus library, but truth be told I haven't played many of them.

PC gaming with all the free games from Epic, GOG, Amazon, not to mention my Steam library pile of shame, will be more than enough to satiate my gaming needs (870+ games all up!).

Easy choice in the end for me to cut my spending by dropping PS Plus Essential.

    • +2

How do you keep your PC upgraded to keep playing new games? A gpu cost more than a ps5 and many years of subscription. Also many pc parts are still affected by inflation.

Have you played many of the 870+ games?

      • -1

PC, doesnt need to be upgrade that often anymore but as well as can be used for work and other uses especially if you can claim it back on tax.

        • -1

Oh right, so you claim the tax proportion back for work based on a percentage of use. How much did the PC cost to build in the first place? Just curious as you are obviously very conscious of the prices of each platform annually, interests me to know the cost.

          What specs is your pc?

          • @onlinepred: Basically it depends on your job / company . I am in IT and so is my bro..I think he told me for him the best method is to do salary sacrifice , I believe he is allowed to buy 1 laptop or computer per year ..I can't remember the details. But it sounded great. Because I think after the 1st year you can then also claim depreciation on it. While for me I don't know if I can do salary sacrifice through my company but I can claim it back on tax .

But really these days the only thing that really needs changing is GPUs and even then I have old GPUs still doing quite well compared to the newer GPUs.so might be better off keeping an older computer and buying a 2nd hand gpu every few years. Besides the last year or 2 of chip shortage / GPUs price hikes due to mining etc. Once they come down to a normal price again probably worth buying again.

            • -1

@lonewolf: Gpu once off would cost the same as a PS at least, more like a PS5 plus a year or two or more of ps plus.. Also when claiming on tax, you are only reducing the taxable component of up your income by a value. You might get a tiny bit back through a return. Really though not a big savings at all. I also work in IT and can buy through salary sacrifice which often saves my close to 40%. A full pc or laptop would still cost way way way more than a ps5.

              • @onlinepred: You were asking about upgrading of parts , gpu. But Through salary sacrifice and depreciation over a few years you pretty much end up getting the PC for free. But besides that you don't buy a new PC every year anyway. There's no need. I have PC's several years old that are perfectly fine for new games still, only change is the GpU and even then you only need to upgrade that every few years. I have GPUs several years old that still do alright for gaming.

                • -1

@lonewolf: Several year old GPUs? The PS will last 7 years. One cost. You WILL need to update PC graphics card every 2-3 years if you are buying not top of the range ones.
I have a gaming PC, claimed on salary sacrifice, I can't claim depreciation as tax is removed from it. I have to upgrade GPU at least every 3 years to continue playing new games. The GPU alone cost more than the PS5. You don't save money on a gaming PC. My 4 year old gaming PC runs games, not well at all, and nothing too new.
Anyway, peace out mate, if you are after value for money, modern gaming on PC is NOT the way for the majority, and more importantly those who can't get tax benefits.

                  • -1

@onlinepred: You don't need to update the GpU every 2 to 3 years. And like I said the last year or 2 was the worst for Gpu prices. They are already coming back down and hopefully soon will be normal prices again. I play new games all the time .

Consoles also may last several years but the quality of graphics can't compete after a couple of years to latest anyway. So you aren't really comparing the same thing. OP already has a PC for gaming too. Plus he probably uses his PC for other things anyway..most people who have consoles will still have a PC for day to day activities at the very least. If not for gaming too..

                    • @lonewolf: Buddy, you aren't making sense here. A computer is more expensive up front than a PS5 no matter what. If you want "quality graphics that ps5 can't compete with" you will need to update your GPU every 2-3 years to continue to play new games at high graphics settings 4k 60fps or more.
The only way your argument works at all, is if you get a brand new gaming PC at $750 after tax benefits, and you make it last 7 years without upgrading any part of it at all. A new GPU is the price of a PS5 or greater full stop.

It's great that you want to ignore the last 2-3 years of GPU prices, and PC prices. Where for almost 3 years, you could have bought 2-3 PS5's for the price of a single high end GPU. Not even including other parts of the PC!

"most people who have consoles will still have a PC for day to day activities at the very least. If not for gaming too.."
This whole discussion was around value, and you are trying to save money. You are the one looking to cut your spend on gaming. You are not saving money getting a PC, nor long term gaming on a PC. End of discussion.

                      • @onlinepred: I think you need to go re read what was said. And like I said I am gaming latest games on my computer's some are new and some are old. Of course there will be a difference in if it's 4k and 60fps but that's not what the OP said was it. You are bringing in your own preferences and then telling the OP that he can't duplicate it.. but he never brought in those same requirements. I do play games at 4k on all 3 of my gaming computers the oldest of which is a 6yr old gpu but I don't get 60fps on 4k with that..depending on the game between 28 and 45 fps for fps games that I have checked frame rates on. which I am happy with with settings on ultra.

My other computers do more. Consoles hardware are technically also getting older by the day just like PC tech. The way consoles get around it is by trying to optimise the game for what the hardware can handle at a reasonable fps..this can only go so far. So within a couple of years if you are upgrading your gpu every 2 to 3 years then it will easily be superior to the 3 year old console for the latest games anyway. So you can't really compare them.

Every console I have gotten is great at release but soon after PC graphics easily gets ahead of it. If you really want to keep everything maxxed out and keep upgrading.

Well me ignoring last 1to 2 years of prices is like you ignoring now most people struggled to even purchase ps5 over the last couple of years…so again pros and cons.
Which is why I game on both. But OP said for him it wasn't worth it anymore so was going back to just gaming on PC.

      • PC hardware has improved and gotten more expensive, the technology behind the games havent' gone really gone anywhere. Unless you want to play every new release on highest settings, high resolution, and high framerate, then that's a different story.

Playing every new release will probably make you realise how crap modern gaming is anyway, and you'll probably just go back to ticking off games in your pile of shame from 10 years ago and realise how much more fun and complete games where back then.

        • Welcome back, a month later

  • Frankly its missing two tiers

    PS Plus Cloud $free
PS Plus Cloud and multiplayer $40 yearly
    PS Plus Essential $80 yearly
    PS Plus Extra $135 yearly
    PS Plus Deluxe $155 yearly

I'm not sure how successful they'll be. Many of those games are probably only of interest to collectors like me.. And I'd own 80% of them so no way I'd pay extra. And with MS it's only $50/yr due to vpn (at least until they dominate the market and close that loophole)

  • Subscription services are the future where you own nothing you are only renting. No thanks not for me.

    • -4

soiny have been pushing for rental only of all media for the past 30 years.

    • Suit yourself. I don't think I will ever have to purchase a new game ever again lol.

  • Damn, I just bought GOTG last week too. All in all it's a killer list that'll keep some new PS5 owners very busy.

  • Remember folks, Sony regularly has discounts on the PS plus services so I’d hope it’ll also be the same for these new premium tiers.

  • +2

How hard would it be to just include an emulator for those of us that have stuck with Sony since the PS1, and have the physical media? Not hard, right?

    • Sony does not care about old school fans that still have old physical PlayStation games , they pretend your physical games don't exist so they can sell it to you again.

    • I think Sony would rather people keep their PS3 plugged into their TV. They cancelled their plans to shut down the online store for it last year.

  • It's all looking rather good. I just hope that streaming will come to Australia, and that you can do all of it from PCs/browsers. Maybe in a couple more years.

  • +2

The extra tier is definitely an attractive option. Some stellar games there for anyone new to ps5. At only $55 more than the essential tier it’s almost a no brainer. Given even 1 of those games would cost at least $55 to buy and most people would at least go the essential tier for cloud saves and online play. And honestly this is good for anyone who has a massive back catalogue of games like I do. Whilst I have all those ps5 games they’ve announced, I’m yet to finish most. So I’ll trade them in to EB and be able to play them through ps plus.

  • Are these games time limited for adding to your library like ps plus now?

  • +2

This is mostly just titles that have been available for free on PS plus over the last 2 years

  • Is this like normal ps plus where once you purchase the games they stay in your collection for as long as you’re subscribed? Or is this like a rotating catalogue like Netflix or something?

    • +1

      More like a Netflix catalogue

  • +1

And this is not the complete list of games, just some highlights.

Also, If you already bought ps1 or psp games you would be able to download them again for free.

  • +2

I have nearlly all these games lol so for me this isn't worth it. What I woudl really like to see is a ps2, ps3 and ps1 collection of games in the service. to be played on a PS5

    • I'm also expecting more PS1 and ps2 games but it seems there will be more games coming, so I guess we just need to be patient

      • if they have a decent collection of ps1 ps2 and ps3 games I will definatlly go for the service, that way I don't have to keep swaping consoles lol just to play a specific game. Well technially I only really play it all on my ps3 because it can play ps1 and ps2 as well with the orginal fat ps3's :D

  • +3

Looks ok if you are new to ps4/5. For existing owners like myself there isn't a single game I would play due to having played these (well the good games) already.

Still prefer MS approach about giving users the new releases day1 as part of the subscription

  • so how much does it cost if your already on PS Plus? do they just charge the difference?

  • not that it matters but no ps vita titles?

  • +1

A lot of people missing this part of the description:
"today they announced some of the games that will be included with the Extra/Deluxe tiers."

For me, as a person that tends to wait for games to drop in price before buying, got a good opportunity here to try a bunch of quality games I'll either most likely play once then never again, or games that I've heard strongly varying receptions to (like Death Stranding).

    • -2

No, we didn't miss that part and that part isn't very important. Sony is not going to hold back the special ones till the very last day. 3rd party games probably won't stay forever.

It's obvious this service will upset some loyal and/or long term PS players. It's more likely for PS players to own some games (compared to XB players) and that feeling that the games you own get added to the extra tier is not pleasant.

got a good opportunity here to try a bunch of quality games I'll either most likely play once then never again

Yes, we know. Quite a few of us have both Series X and PS5, so we know GamePass well. It goes both ways. If you really think about it, there is a reason you didn't pick up those games, because you initially thought they are not worth it. There is another factor involved: time. You will now need to allocate some time to play games which you would otherwise not play. If you opted for ad hoc subscriptions, the month(s) you have the subscription on, you have to spend more time to play games to get your money worth.

      • +2

Why would PS players be any more likely to own a higher ration of games coming to this service, as opposed to when Xbox Game Pass launched for XB players?
There's a ton of old and dated games on Xbox Game Pass too; they just haven't offered anything worthwhile as free in their Gold package for a long time.

Nah, I just didn't pickup a bunch of these because they felt like poor value for their costs, as we've seen next-gen games increase in price. Spiderman games were what, 15 hours for $99 new at the time?
Just spent time catching up on my backlog of PC games while waiting for these prices to drop, but now this service entices me to play these games for a fee I'm happy to pay.
        Simple as that.

        • -1

Why would PS players be any more likely to own a higher ration of games coming to this service, as opposed to when Xbox Game Pass launched for XB players?

          Simple:

          1. Sony PS4 won the previous gen console war. A lot more 1st party exclusives previous gen.
          2. A lot of those exclusives were heavily discounted.
          3. GamePass has been around for FAR LONGER. Do you expect XBox One S|X owners kept on buying games at exact the same rate as PS4 owners after GamePass was available?
          4. With birthday bonus, level up bonus (which may not be no longer available), and OZB deals, you could make money buying games cheap and trade to EB.

A lot of the PS4 games in the list were PS Plus free games and some are on PS Plus collection. So, for those who weren't on PS Plus for a long period time, they might be happy with it. But, for those who were on PS Plus for a while, they may not find this list very special so far.

Please do not use RRP as examples. For both Spiderman (PS4) and Spiderman Miles Morales (PS5), I made profit after trade in (due to birthday bonus + level bonus) and great OZB deals. So, got to play them, and made some $$$. It's not all bad buying games cheap. If it weren't because I had some games to trade in, I wouldn't be able to get Series X for $100 and PS5 for $50 after trade in (I did trade in PS4 Pro and XB1X). Received Series X on launch day, received PS5 2 weeks after launch.

Are you able to trade in subscription service?

    • Your comment was helpful actually. This is a calculated move from Sony.

      • Sony needs to offer new comers (or people who did not own PS4 but now purchased a PS5) a more compelling experience than PS Plus Collection.
      • People who are generally unwilling to fork out money on games unless they are dirt cheap.
      • People who weren't regular PS Plus subscribers.
      • Not upsetting their loyal fan base too much.

The PS5 first and second party games in the list are either launch titles or upgrades which are probably priced too high. Sony funded Dead Stranding so I consider that a second party game. A small number of 3rd party titles which either flopped a bit, or annual refresh title(s).

I am not someone Sony needs to target, since I support both camps (have been for years). This does remind me of GamePass in its early days (no day 1 first party exclusives - that was added later) and the initial list wasn't compelling enough (I did buy Microsoft first party exclusive titles).

  • -4

Wow what a convoluted mess, great idea sony lol

    • +1

It ain't that hard… 3 tiers and that's it. Not unlike Gamepass.

  • -1

So pretty much a cut down for anyone who got PS plus subs. All converted to essential and get nothing extra and should I say downsized

More crappy schemes to get more money out of you.

    Can I call this inflation?

    • +1

Downsizing will come when PS Plus free games start to become like XBox Live Gold free games. Most people won't care because most of us would prefer to be in the higher tier.

Will Sony continue to offer the once a year special discount? If not, then it is adding insult to injury.

      • We all know Sony just wants you to pay more for their subs. I'm not buying it.

    • Current PS+ and the new PS Plus Essential are exactly the same service at the same price with the same benefits included. Nothing has changed but the name.

  • No Metal Gear Solid 1 in the classic games. No deal.

  • This is horrid! Might suit the new gamer, for everyone else, holy shit, this is so bad! At that price, you could probably own all those games in a few years or the games you don't have. I own like 70% of them.

    • It's like that for GamePass initially too. Games you own do get added to the library. Also, if you had PS Plus for quite some time, a lot of them you would have collected.

We'll need to wait and see if Sony would offer discount deals from time to time. Otherwise, for busy gamers, I can see ad hoc subscriptions being used. For example, join for a month around Christmas / New Year. Quality of PS Plus Essential free games will degrade further towards the level like XBox Live Gold free games I reckon.

We've seen Demon's Souls at $15 yesterday. If this is going to be like GamePass, we will see more discount deals on PS5 games on this list.

    • yeah no good i agree with you.

  • Spiderman MM, GoT Directors Cut & AC Valhalla for $18.95 for the month sounds alright. Granted I'd only finish Spiderman and GoT.

Seems to me anything above essential would be good for someone that has not had a PlayStation device before. Otherwise, everyone that has been on PlayStation for a while (like me) there's not a lot of value in it.

I mean, I still have a working PlayStation of every sort (including PSP and PS VITA). and have bought all the games I wanted on those platforms. I might be interested in some remasters if they were remastered specifically for PS5, but the PS4 remasters I mostly have already.

If they had included streaming games that might have peaked my interest, because I do not have to download them if I want play an old game on a whim.

    • Yeah I would say its good but not great if you had a ps5 for a while as you would likely have a few or many of them already.

Been owning the both PS5 and XSX for couple months, I have only got one game on my PS5 which is Horizon Forbidden West came from the EB bundle. 90% of my gaming time went to XBox simply because I didn't want to spend an extra cent on games since Game Pass provides incredible value.

I am pumped to finally see this list of amazing titles on PS Plus. Now the only thing left is when can I sign up for the Turkish/Argentinian/Indian PS Plus.

    • Apparently PlayStation are onto that so it might be a bit tougher to try and get a deal from another country. You can always await till there’s a sale on the PS store

  • +1

Wait for a VPN deal to pop up in the coming months. This deal will get real cheap

  • Checked the list and I may just go for the basic one because I rather own the games that I interested, physically or digitally. Look forward to get listed games at discount from retailers/PSN.

  • couple good games you should have owned 2-3-5-6+ years ago, and a bunch of avg nothing. much the same as ps plus normally… this is unimpressive, looks purely as a competitive lure for gamers new to Sony to leave MS. MS' offering doesn't impress me either, whole bunch of rubbish for the most part.

hands up those who look to pay ~$50 for PS Plus on sale, and wouldn't touch any of this extra monthly charge grifting with a 10ft pole?

    refuse/resist.

    • Couple good games?

Demons Souls PS5 remake, Returnal, Miles Morales all GOTY type games.

Lots of others in between as well.

Brilliant - have all the decent games already so no need to upgrade!

  • +4

PS Plus Essential will probably end up with trash games so as to incentivise you to upgrade….

    • Yep. I don't think they'll be giving us regular PS Plus users any goodies, even if we have been subscribers for 5 plus years (pun intended).

  • Can you update for a month or two and then go down again? I’ve got PS+ for a long time and I’ve played most of those games but I’m tempted just for Ghost of Tsushima.

    • Don't think so, not for people with long term subscription. Ghost of Tsushima PS5 is a surprise in that list. I still have Ghost of Tsushima PS4… I should try to sell it or trade it in a.s.a.p. Maybe the value already dropped.

Hope Sony offers a special conversion deal. $1 conversion like what Microsoft did is wishful thinking I reckon.

I had stacked already until mid 2024, cost $149 to upgrade to deluxe which will end same time, mid 2024.

    • Isn't that just full price?

      Difference between $80 > $155 x 2 years

I guess your stacked sub would have been discounted at least!

      • Yeah it is, I don’t think I’ve bought any in some time as it was pre price hike

        • My stack just ended this month, fail!

I'm waiting for a ps plus discount but probably terrible timing..

  • So I have PS+ essentials which is rolling over from my normal PSN plus.

Can I upgrade to the PS+ extra for a month to play returnal (and pay the extra $7 or so), finish it and go back down?

Would save me a solid $70 from buying it new.

    • You can only upgrade based on whatever your remaining term is.

      If it's 2 days, then it's a 2 day upgrade price.

      If it's 3 years, it's a 3 year upgrade price.

      (I'm 99% sure).

  • Can we pay using our wallet balance?

    • +1

Yep. I paid for PS gift cards from JB and loaded them into my wallet.

Saves the weird foreign transaction fee (Australian PS account but Sony always charges from UK).

  • I have an American account and made the mistake of upgrading to the highest tier… Streaming simply doesn't work and boots me back to the home screen :-(

    • +2

Look forward to you posting your first deal.

      • +2

        better than Ozleeching lol

  • Through antedoctal evidence (from WP and other discussion forums), if you have stacked PS+ subscriptions in the past, the cost to upgrade is capped at:

    • Extra for $135.95
    • Deluxe $186.95

I've read posts saying some had 10 years of PS+ membership stacked and these were the prices quoted. Others with less time at 1500-1600 days also quoted the same price.

Personally, I had 880 days left and paid $132 to upgrade to Extra.

So the maximum amount is probably capped at 905 days of stacked membership or thereabouts.
