Got it on Explorer, not Platinum Charge. Both have unused travel credits on them fwiw.

  • Targeted. Not on my Plat Charge.

  • Got it on my DJ Platinum. I'm in the process of booking a big trip, so this may come in handy.

Any good deals from Amex Travel?

Does the existing credit that you get annually with the credit card count for spend?

    • +1

No - you can use it but you need to spend on the card itself.
"If you use Membership Reward Points and/or Travel Credit toward your booking, only the amount charged to your Card is valid for the offer."

  • Not on any of my cards

  • Thanks OP got it on my explorer

    Just a warning.

I have booked a fair few trips with AMEX credits during COVID and have been charged a fortune in additional fees on every rebooking for my family of 5, including even for the rebookings of credit with Virgin and Qantas. Also, I was unable to use cheap flight options I could see on the AMEX Travel and airline websites for my credits - AMEX would only rebook on non-sale fares (which cost multiples of the original costs, and did not offer kids or infant fares). I am highly inclined to cancel both of our AMEX Explorer cards after the experiences TBH. Especially given they no longer offer experiences, which was how we used our travel credits when we first got the cards (e.g. harbour bridge climb for anniversary, cruises on the harbour, wine tours etc).

Yeah, I am having a similar issue!
First they tried to charge us $99 pp for a 'change fee' that was not a part of the conditions when we first booked/cancelled.

Now they're trying to get me to pay $990 for a $477 flight because apparently there are terms and conditions to what flights you can use your flight credit for? Oh, and they tried to justify it by saying I am losing the tax component because my new flight isn't domestic, (terms say as long as I fly out of Australia it's okay).

But when I called up Qantas about this, they said there was no such rule and I shouldn't be charged more than $477 regardless of what credits I am using!

Of course, I still have to wait for Amex to call back, because any time you want to make a change, or query or anything at all, you have do it via phone call, and then they'll get back to you in 2+ days.

Been over a week and I still haven't got flights.
Amex flight credit is honestly not worth the credit! going to cancel as soon as we work out how to use the $2000 worth of credit we're stuck with due to COVID cancellations

      • I thought the credit expires each year?

The prices are pretty expensive compared to booking directly. The only thing worth the stress is that its forcing me to travel the country more and not put it off.

        • they extended the unused 2019 and 2020 due to COVID, and we purchased some buy XX get YY credits.

lols, well we tried to travel Australia a bit more too, but the borders for wherever we booked always ended up closing right before our travel dates.

      • Yeah I have been pretty annoyed with them too…their international prices are now higher than what Qantas is offering and they cannot apply any flight credits (from Covid cancelled flights) immediately as it needs to go to another Dept and they takes ages to get back to you…I wonder if there is a recourse to get these credits refunded given how hard Amex makes it to use them…

        • Hah, if you manage to find a way to do that please please share as soon as you do
I think amex will see a rush of people doing that. The service is sooo bad ….

  • ref "one or more transactions, on Hotels or Car Hire" so 300 on car hire and $100 on hotel would qualify?
