Just a thought for op/others, if you're looking for an 850w psu, chances are you're running a fairly nice high end cpu and/or gpu. I'd definitely be spending enough to get a good brand (e.g. Something seasonic/superflower) and at least gold.

Fully modular Platinum may be a tad overkill, especially on a case without a side panel.

Evga G2's used to be great (according to Johnny Guru), but haven't bought one for a wile, and someone mentioned that the OEM changed here. Make sure to check if buying :)

    • Why is this an overkill especially on a case without a side panel?
10 year warranty etc - seems good.

Oh. My reply was incomplete. I meant to say I'd spend more than $100, typically.

If the case being perfectly neat isn't important (as it's not visible), and really Platinum vs gold isn't much of a difference. Even in a small case most of the extra heat will be rejected by the psu rather than go into the case. That's what I meant by "tad overkill". You could easily step down from a fully modular Platinum psu, but I'd still aim for a top tier brand, and gold at least.

        • Does a Platinum PSU run hotter than a Gold PSU?
My Gold 850W PSU cost more than $100

          • @wetwork: It runs cooler and has slightly better components than gold.

            • @John Doh: That's what you would expect. So was surprised by incipient's comment.

          • @wetwork: The difference in efficiency is lost as heat.

But yeah that's the point I tried to make, badly haha, to op was that I'd generally suggest spending more than $100 and get a good brand, with a gold efficiency, if they didn't want to buy something as fancy as this EVGA psu.

Have been thinking about the MSI 850, was waiting for another/better deal or better brand but seems to be unbeatable price for what it is so far..

  • have this to power 5950x, 64GB ram, 2TB 980 pro and 3080… it all turns on. admittedly they are all accessories for my rgb lighting

    • Dude I think you need an upgrade 😆
