This popped up as a social media ad. "As a Sydney University student, you are entitled to a free campus subscription to The Australian and The Daily Telegraph! Register for free access to leading local and international news coverage"

Not really a news person but free is free.

I am not a uni student, so signed up using my gmail account and it worked. Subscription valid for 12 months until May 2023.

Usually $7/week, $364 over 12 months.

Mod: As per brandogs comment it works on all News Corp sites.

@MKBHD: Reductio ad absurdum. You seem to be equating the News Corp with 8-chan?
Not everyone who is not in our tribe is the same.

            • @bargaino: You literally invoked Godwin's theory, and then have the gal to suggest it's ad absurdum?

Why not throw in Hitler and Stalin while you are at it?

              • @ThithLord: Yes, i was out-absurding you. It was not a big escalation :)

  • +2

Wow, very BIG thanks Op, I cancelled my subscription last year, this is perfect, BIG smile on my dial. Have a great day.

  • Also gives you access to 3 months free Flash as per this deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/662749

    • Hmm I dunno, their Kayo offer and comps show this: Sorry, you're not eligible to redeem this offer.

Your registered account or subscription does not include access to redeem offers.

To subscribe or upgrade your subscription to one which includes offer redemption, give us a call on 1300 MY NEWS (1300 696 397), or sign up online today.

  • Hate news corp, but this is awesome to get past paywalls on AdelaideNow when needed.

    Freedom freedom freedom.

to read or not to read.

    It’s your choice.

    The. End.

    • +1

Should ISIS be allowed to publish recruitment articles? Freedom to read.

      • Yes of course. If we wanted to read it we shoild be able to. The way my wife treats me, im seriously considering it.
All jokes aside, im only recently recently interested in politics, so i might not be saying this right, and as someome who grew up being taught how great democracy is, i found it concerning that its a majority rules ideaology. I feel lije the first thing we need to do for a better democracy in Aus, is not have compulsory voting.. so many votes from people who dont want it, their knowledge is limited to advertising or infomercials about a party in the weeks leading up to vote..

        • Maybe the answer is the encourage proper education of voters. People have a duty to properly participate in a democracy and ensure we head in a direction they want.

As it is, voter apathy, not talking about politics and women taking an interest are all discouraged.

There are programs to prevent radicalisation and extremism in western societies. At least in the US, they don't target right wing extremists. In fact, newscorp through Fox even pushes some of these points. You have white supremacists writing for Tucker Carlson and him receiving praise from them.

For Australia it would be great to see such a program target these views as well, potentially starting with the Young Liberals.

          • @ihfree: The first step is a None of the above box on the ballot, so people can legitimately vote, but express their viewm

            • @M00Cow: People are all two happy to play into billionaire's agendas. Hey Clive, you can't put two parties last! Guess which party gets priority and therefore maintains the status quo.

An invalid vote is an invalid vote. Even if you're hiring for incremental improvement, that's better than nothing. There are three years to attempt change if people care enough.

Independents are probably the best from a pure democracy standpoint especially if they listen to their constituents rather than towing the party line… Eg. Josh Frydenberg.

              • @ihfree: I agree. My biggest complaint is that the lower house, is supposed to be the House of Representatives. I.E. represent the area you were elected from. Independents are more likely to do this. Ideally 150 independents would be best, but alas you couldn't form a Govt, as our Westminster system was designed to function with two parties. That's now likely to move to multiple party coalitions, which might keep the bastards honest

I think making it unlawful to induce a representative to vote a certain way, would be a good start. I e. Every vote should be a free vote.

But my response was to the idea of removing compulsory voting. I strongly suspect we would follow the US where voter turn out I'd around 35% I e. Not even close to being representative. Then there's an arms race in spending to get people to vote, mostly by being contentious, divisive and change apathy to anger.

I think that that compulsory voting does get most people engaged just a little bit in deciding who to vote for. But some will have no interest, or wish to not vote, then there should be a None of the above box to allow them not to participate.

  • Yeah Nah. My firewall has blocked the domain, and I can't be bothered unblocking it to subscribe to News Corp.

  • +5

Murdoch media can go and get ffffed. Liberal propaganda at it's best.

  • Thanks!
I'm trying to work out what the "the Australian corporate digital access (mp)" is..?
Its under my subscription in my account that gives you "Your The Oz access code" for 6 months.

  • There are some good statistical contents in Herald Sun like school ranking, VCE school performance. It is definitely a bargain at free cost. I hope News Corp doesn't invalidate our subscriptions. Thanks op for sharing.

    +666 upvotes. Perfection.

  • Thanks @stan88 free is indeed free

Obviously, an attempt to get the Libs over the line on Saturday. I subscribed to be able to access paywalled NRL content. Have already received an email with not too subtle LNP propaganda.

  • By the way, Adam Creighton's article in the Australian today is another cracker!
    https://www.theaustralian.com.au/commentary/election-2022-re…

    • +6

The headline is certainly right "Election 2022: Real battle is between authoritarians, believers in freedom"

      Considering:

      • drop in press freedoms in Australia under the LNP
      • secret trials for whistleblowers
      • numerous SLAPP lawsuits launched by LNP politicians
      • use of the federal police by the government to target whistleblowers
      • raids on journos
      • proposed laws to force social media users to be identified (under the guise of "think of the children"!)
      • the tamed press

You'd be crazy to vote LNP if you cared about freedom.

      • +1

Have you seen FriendlyJordies piece on the Chairman of the IPA (who writes articles for the Australian)?

She's a self-confessed free-speech warrior gunning for FJ's arrest because of some mean words he's said. You just can't make this shit up, hey?

  • +2

I subscribed just for the NT News

    • Doesn't the Murdoch rag up there just report on crocodiles and not much else?

      • +1

Speckles the Psychic Croc has predicted an Albo victory, albeit it may be tight: https://www.ntnews.com.au/news/politics/national-exclusive-s…

Actually, just remembered one of my favourite NT News stories of all time, a front page piece about a woman who was outraged that some unknown man had shaved her (profanity): https://www.ntnews.com.au/news/northern-territory/furry-mysterious-catnappers-shaved-my-(profanity)/news-story/89add0b911525c5a9bc60befadf6aa47

    God save the Queen

  • +6

FWIW, I signed up, and already got two "breaking news" alerts, one about unemployment and record lows, one about how ALP's deficit is higher than the Coalition. I am not surprised. Good thing I can unsubscribe from their emails at least.

    • +1

Deficit? This government has hit the trillion dollars in debt 🤣

  • +2

Wouldn't read those even if they are free.

  • +3

This is not a deal. It is a disease. Stop spreading it.

  • +3

A newspapers regardless of their publication owners have their own bias, editorial opinions and 'journalist' (I use that lightly since journalism is long dead).
Truth, objectivity, facts are no longer presented to readers/viewers because it is all because these things don't bring in the "clicks" and subscribers. So they always push an agenda and whether you agree with the opinion (left leaning or right leaning) most people want to read about their own echo chambered views.

Pity that people can't take another opinion without losing it because it doesn't fit in with their own world view.

  • +5

Murdoch rags are a cancer on democracy, worldwide.

  • +3

Left wingers going to be madddddddd

    • Even as someone on the right, you should be disgusted at Murdoch and where he's taken things. I'm sure there are actual conservative news sources that don't need to lie or run propaganda for the LNP.

What does he really represent? It's certainly not his audience who are tricked into voting against their interests.

      • +2

I dont consider myself right i consider myself center and although i dont 'love' Murdoch media Empire i wouldnt have ago any anyone who likes to consume the information being put out.

I would suggest you 'take most of it' with a gain of salt

      Dodged a bullet there!

I've never paid for garbage before, but free garbage is another story.

  • Wow. Not to nitpick but their ad team and IT team seem to suffer from the same laziness as their editorial staff.

"As a Syney uni" and an extra floating apostrophe in the error message.

    • With how much you commented on this post I worry about you man

        • Heaven forbid Australian citizens taking great issue with a cancer on our democracy, aye. Even the POTUS has said Murdoch is a stain.

I'm sure that'll get their shackles up thou lmao any mention of the B word and they go AWOL

  • Only getting this so I can read local sport articles which are always paywall'd.

So my subscription has been suddenly cancelled. No explanation. Has anyone else had this?

    • yep just stopped working

      • +1

I don’t care enough to chase it up. But seems like NewsCorp can even manage to screw up a bargain

    • +5

Hope you all signed up using burner accounts and details. Mudoch now has your details to sell. Good tatic from Newscorp.

      • +1

Yep. Burner email. Fake name. Fake mobile.

      • Expected this to happen. No details for them to sell. Assume everyone reacted by flagging Newscorp email as spam as their email stopped going to the inbox and were flagged as spam today. Email alias created just for this trial is now deleted so they only have a bouncing email address to sell :)

You just can’t access any content. If you click on an article it will take you to a payment screen. You can check your status in the account settings for a confirmation. If it has been cancelled, it will say cancelled.

You won’t receive any communication from NewsCorp

      • You won’t receive any communication from NewsCorp

Well you'll still get the thrice daily spam.

J/K , easy come easy go.

I updated the junk preferences yesterday, wonder if that flagged something? Probably coincidence.

Hope some of you manage to stay under the radar.

I unsubscribed from emails. They were sending about 2 a day.

  • All the newscorp sites look great on my samsung a8 from optus.

    • Haha same for me too!

  • +1

    Mine got cancelled today

  • Noticed mine shows status:Cancelled too.
Everyone must be reporting News Corp email as spam as they just started going to the iCloud junk folder.

  • +1

    Mine got cancelled too!
Not sure if it's due to newsletter unsubscribed.

    • +1

I signed up several accounts, all got cancelled, but I'd only unsubscribed one. Like the Kayo deal, I suspect it was those who sign up after a certain HH:MM got cancelled

  • Subscription cancelled

  • +1

Cancelled too, ah well, I viewed my membership as a blessing for them anyway

  • +2

Its a classic pump & dump scheme. They'll publish yesterday's subscription numbers & execs will get their healthy 1/2 yearly bonuses as a result. Knowing how they backed the losing side in the election, they'll be stuffed in 6mths.

  • +1

Wow OzBargain is a sensative bunch. These comments are a train wreck! Anyway thanks OP

    • +3

Thanks for what ? All the subscriptions are being cancelled

  • +1

I subscribed just to see what it's like given I haven't looked at a murdoch rag in years, I was hoping I got cancelled for this comment I couldn't help making on their "editorial" yesterday, ""Editorial", aka Ruperts stooge, what a disgrace this rag is, promoting the corrupt and morally bankrupt LNP as a credible government, shame on the australian, and all the other twerps who support this festering, odorous, appalling excuse for a government..", but alas after seeing all the cancellations it seems I was just another pawn..

    • I just wanted to see next week's backpedaling, the gnashing of teeth and the campaigning for P.Dutty will be our next PM in 3yrs

  • +3

    Beware, absolute scam!
I registered and received confirmation etc and read two issues and now on day three, they want credit card details & payment.

  • +1

I keep getting 3 times day updates.. bugger if I can work out how to unsubscribe. I've changed my email address to [email protected] give them some of their own spam medicine….
