And don't forget eScooter bingo. jv is banned so you can cross that one off.

    • I didn't realise JV is banned.

    • Hehe didn't realize this was a thing, but damn it's so accurate :)

      • +1

Already had an armchair NSW lawyer try to tell me that I could get a fine today. He doesn't even know what I'm riding.

        • +2

You don't even live in NSW or VIC and they're still saying you'll get a fine LOL. I live in NSW and you can get a $2.5K fine (people have reported $2.7K & $4.5K).

E-scooter + Ferry sounds like an excellent way to save fuel. That was a good answer

          • @Zackeroo: are electric bikes excluded?

strange that scooters are not allowed yet people can ride electric bikes

          • +2

@Zackeroo: Yeah the fact that I said I don't live in either and then someone still tries to say I'll get fined is crazy.

The local councils have made the $3.50 ferry free for escooters and cyclists. They're very supportive of reducing traffic here.

    • +1

      why was jv banned?

      • +3

        because jv was jv.

        • +3

          what's new?

if that was the case should have been perm banned long time ago.

        • -5

jv always lit up the comment section… jv was genuine OzBargain humour, a icon for us all.

jv if you're reading this (in incognito), you're greatly missed :(

    • +1

should have just said in penalty box..

      banned implies permanent

      • +1

        U seem dissapointed

I was comparing between this or Segway G30, im worried about the range being too low.

I've also heard its illegal unless on private roads in NSW which, as a Sydneysider makes me very jealous of the those living in TAS and QLD.

I've read the cops were handing out fines, 9 news even covered it, but my mates have assured me that cops wont do anything.

    • +1

Same in Victoria. It is illegal but the State govt allowed commercial operators to leave them on footpaths, everywhere.

    • +6

You've won the eScooter bingo. Good job.

      • I tried but just couldnt fit in arm chair lawyer or jv.

  • would an electric bike be better than these scooters(which may not be legal in some states)?

    • Yes. E-bikes are legal, e-scooters are not. I'd assume you don't want a fine.

      • it's weird rules why e-scooters are not allowed
        but e-bikes are allowed.

        anyway from an usage POV
        would e-bikes be better?

seems like they might have longer rides between charges
and allows you carry more extra stuff.
They also give a more comfortable ride and can go on more surfaces..

Also they a less likely to get you a fine than the e-scooter

Saw some e-bikes being ridden around
and checked the prices and some are only like double this e-scooter's price.

        • "only double the e-scooter price" <——- that's the reason there

I have all of em. escooter, eskateboard, ebikes, and 3x regular bikes.

yes, bikes is more functional, can carry stuff (especially with a rack and panniers) and longer distances. but escooter fits into the car or train much easier. It depends on your need and your own commute. I simply use the one that's most appropriate for the day.

I use the ebike or regular bike if commuting my 20km+ ride to the office, or if I train or drive I'd throw in the escooter or skateboard in the car or bring into the train.

E-scooter is great just to get around the city, or for shorter commutes with light loads. In VIC at least, you wont be bothered.

          AMA

          • @lawyerz: What are your thoughts about using escooter to commute to the train station? Currently, I am taking a bus to the train station. I will have more flexibility if I use escooter but the drawback is to bring it on the train all the way.

            • @azm: It's a great option. How far is the station to your house and how are the paths/bike lanes to your house from the station? the protective services police won't bother you.

If I'm lazy to take it on the train, I park it at the train station often, in the parkiteer bike cages sometimes. https://www.bicyclenetwork.com.au/our-services/parkiteer/ (it's meant only for bikes but my station's parkiteer is never even close to being at capacity)

Lock it with a typical bicycle D lock at the front wheel fork.

              • @lawyerz: @lawyerz: That is a great option with flexibility. The closest train station is like 3.1-3.5 km from my home. I will look at the parking option.

I've had experience with e-scooters and e-bikes and there's so much that I want to tell you right now hahaha. I've had millions of conversations about "Why are e-bikes legal but e-scooters aren't?" They usually carry over into a conversation about, "What defines a bicycle?".

In general, from a usage perspective, it depends on the person and the riding style they'll be doing. For me, e-scooters are more convenient due to their size and portability. They're much smaller than an e-bike, while being as capable. The range on the Max G30 is 65km, and the range on other scooters such as the Pro 2 is 45km. My current e-scooter has 45km range which works out to one charge per 2-3 weeks for me. The range is no issue.

Bicycles are naturally more comfortable than e-scooters on long range trips, considering you're sitting down. E-bikes are also legal in NSW which can make or break your decision. I live in NSW and use an e-scooter, but I only use it nearby my home and around my local parks and bike tracks. I do t use it to travel to work, as much as I want to. I've worked towards making e-scooters legal in NSW, and have helped publish an article in the past about e-scooters in NSW. In July, we're finally taking a step forwards, with a rental e-scooter trial occuring in some suburbs. We have hopes to make e-scooters legal by December.

For everyone's sake, I really hope we can get rid of these $2.5K fines soon

Want one of these for when I need to quickly pop to the shops, or visit someone locally

    • +1

That's the perfect use for them. They have just the amount of range to charge them every month and use it occasionally for small trips. Saves on fuel and is a VERY convenient size. I use mine at least once a week :)

  • What'd you upgrade to, Clear? And for how much?

    • +1

Raptor Pro for $2300. I wanted something with suspension, larger battery, dual motors and faster speeds. Handles off-road really well.

      • Nice. I recently modded my Xiaomi Pro 2 with a sharkset front suspension kit, which has made it noticably smoother, but I feel like I've embarked on a slippery slope of wanting more speed/comfort/expense.. :P

        • Sharkset are supposed to be the best. The problem you'll find is that when you upgrade it's not enough. My scooter is 52V and then I see 60V and 70V scooters that go faster and further.

Its amazing how butt-hurt people get over e-scooters.
Most of them you can't get past 25kmph - while bikes are absolutely gunning it and without a doubt would do more damage if they collide with someone.

The argument around if its legal here or illegal there blah blah is done to death. Its a victimless "crime".

Cop that lives next door to me in Vic has one, cruises to work on it as well as some of their collogues lol

    • +1

Agreed. They're essentially fining you for not driving your car.

      Just bought one. Can't wait

      • +1

Enjoy it, I have the ninebot.
Absolutely one of my favorite purchases ever.

I ride it mostly from my house, down to the tram and then through the city to work when I go in. And if I just need to pop down to the shops, I dont need to get into my car and go through that traffic drama to get some milk.

    • +2

I'd argue drones, that ozbargain loves to death, is probably as dangerous if not more.

My neighbour had a drone fall in his backyard last year, imagine his kid was playing?

  • Since E scooter bingo doesn't care about WA I should add that at the moment E bikes and scooters require a valid driver's licence if they're more powerful than 200W.

    • -1

      We don't care ;)

  • Loving it!

Only negative is that the front wheel is hard to inflate.

My street has is slightly sloped, and I was a bit disappointed with the speed. Then I realised there was an S Mode.

I can’t believe people would hack this to go to 40km/h.

It is so not needed for me, lol

The lock and spare tyre were a nice surprise :)

    • Excuse me? Lock?

      • Yeah it came with a combination lock

  • Waiting for f40a deal

    • I am also thinking about whether to get this one or 40a. I don't want to fix the punctured tyre.

      • +1

You can buy the tubeless tyre from ebay to avoid the punctures. But I'm more worried about the warranty
Buying from JB is peace of mind

  • These are easy to hack. We have 4 - one for everyone in the family. I've set the limit to 35km/hr which seems the sweet spot. Doesn't put too much strain on the motor or battery. You need the extra speed going up hills otherwise they drop to below 20km/hr. Makes starting a lot easier too.
Only issue is changing the tyre, especially on the front tyre (where the motor is). Absolute pain in the arse.

    • can you still hack them? apparently with the new update you can't?
