finally i can put my 2400bps modem in my room! :P

You still use your home phone?

Unfortunately the telephone port is at one end of the house and the computer room is at the other. Rather than placing my modem-router there and patching 5 gigabit ethernet cables over, i'm bringing the port over to me.

If you guys rather spend more time and transfer stuff via WLAN, it's your time wasted, not mine :)

1.i too prefer wired than wireless when it's possible
2.you don't need 5 lan cables just 1 running between the rooms(just like the phone line) and a switch
3.there are also powerline adaptors= good speed and no cables at all
4.strreaming via wlan is not always wasted time! i regularly stream content to my 3 internet tvs + ipads+ smartphones to every room in the house(big family)
      5. Go cable! Much faster than the adsl from a normal telephone line ;)

      P.s. Good deal though!

        1. Getting another switch = more $. I already have a modem-router gigabit. $1 vs a gigabit switch.
        2. Again. Cost. $1
        3. It's not simple streaming, which BTW i use for my tv other bits as well, but when it comes to speed for the stuff i do, gigabit ethernet > wireless lan.

Long telephone cables will introduce additional interference into the line, resulting in lower ADSL sync speeds. The longer the telephone cable, the worse the interference!

The cost argument ($1!) can't be beaten, but please keep an eye on your sync speeds to make sure you don't lose too much speed. :)

        • Well, to address toomuchdogfur, yep, I've always been told that long telephone cables were likely to introduce interference. Especially since, from what I understand, these are not twisted pairs?

But happily, even though I was once in this situation and was also running a 10M length of telephone cable, my sync speeds stayed the same! Whew! It was an unsightly mess though. :)

Ermmm. 10m. Mate we're not talking about huge distances here. Also does not need to be shielded, grounded etc. It's not as sensitive as you'd think it is, just don't wire it around a power line or speakers, generators, your EMP doomsday device etc… 10m will be negligible.

May i recommend you a nice chart.

And no, they don't use some magic cable of sorts. Just a simple copper wire pair.

        • Actually anything over 1.5m in telephone cables can reduce speed slightly / cause issues. "Can" being the operative word. I do know that my 10m extension causes issues so in the end i dont use it anymore.

10m? You shouldn't really see much difference at all, unless you are gonna miss that 3kB/s over your 1000kB/s…

ADSL2+ is usually capable of speeds 500kB/s + at 3.5km from exchange (with decent copper lines). If 3.5km has this affect (3500m) then i doubt 3510m is going to push that figure very far.

Using a 10m extension is not the same as adding 10m distance to the exchange. The extension cords / cables can add all types of variants to the signal. One of the most common things asked first if you have ADSL issues is are you using a extension cord, most ISPs recommend to have your router plugged in within 2m to the port. But in my case, i wasnt using the extension cord for my router, it was being used for my phone. But they were both on the same line and hence the extension cord added noise / intermittent signal variances to my line. Once moved my phone closer to the wall socket and didnt use the extension cord, my speeds and sync increased.

Saying that, it isnt the end of the world if you do have to use it, Most times you should still be ok… but it can cause issues, moreso if it is being used to connect the ADSL to the wall socket.

        • I can vouch for @lonewolf's post. When my ISP changed my DSLAM port at the exchange, my speeds went down. When I removed a length of extension cord, speeds went up again. The particular extension I used (it was an old one) must have had detrimental electrical characteristics.

Worth buying just for "hookup wire"

    • Voted product of the decade.

      • +2

        But which decade?

  • whats a TELEYOPHONE

  • I got 10m for $2, the ticket is $19.98 ( or something like that ), it wasn't on special. However, when it scanned ( the saleman a bit surprise) it show up $2.

    • The shop i purchased at showed the 19.98 ticket price as well and it was closing down so there was 50% off. I figured $10 bucks whilst not cheap is not too dear. 50% $2 = $1 :D

Thanks. Got myself 150+ meters for 4 core phone cable for $24. 16c a meter. Bargain :)
