Indian Wedding Apparel (for guest)

Hi all

Seeking some advice from the brains trust please - Going to a friend's Indian wedding in August, and looking for some indian attire I can get that is not overly expensive (male and female) . I'm not sure how much these things cost so not sure what to expect.

I'm Sydney based… Any recommendations would be great.

Thank you!

You don't care whether its male or female attire? How gender fluid of you. But i'd recommend you wear Indian attire appropriate to your gender. Cross-dressing might not go over well at an Indian wedding.

But seriously, the problem with ethnic dressing is that you don't know what's appropriate or inappropriate and might cause embarrassment or offence.

This is a useless answer. OP clearly wants both female and male.. I assume because they are going as a couple.

  • Go online and import direct from India

    • Yeah but he/she will need to send fitting measurements from here.

      • If it is not too tight fitting outfit then buy the closest fit and even after paying for local adjustments I reckon good chance still be cheaper (and will be authentic)?

        • Depends actually
The one’s you’ll get here are readymade, generic sizing.
The one’s from India would be Taylor stitched - custom made.

Authenticity wouldn’t really be an issue tbh. They all look similar anyways. Especially considering op doesn’t wanna spend too much.
Also, there’s nothing wrong with rocking up in a nice suit/dress.
Generally only the close friends/relatives wear traditional garments. Ordinary guests most often wear suits with/without ties.

  • Traditionally, men wear a ‘sherwani’ when attending an Indian wedding.

If you have any Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi friends, just ask them and they will happily lend you something if they have any.

If you want to try on then yes go to a shop

If buying online i used Indianweddingsaree.com a lot for all of my indian wedding clothes (i.e. for groom, groomsmen, and bridesmaids, parents etc)

Search lehenga cholis in Sydney. Loads of places, all comes down to $$$

  • Ask the friend. They can tell you where to go and what to expect.

At my friends wedding the non Indian guests just wore what they would to a typical Australian wedding for that time of day, as did some of the Indian guests.

Heads up (sorry if I’m making a generalisation) but Indian weddings are LOUD - have heard the same from others. This might sound outrageous, but consider ear protection like you might for a concert.

    • You wear ear protection at concerts? Jeez.. wheres the fun in that?

      • I personally don’t, but I don’t go to concerts anymore since I have a little one. But people do https://www.health.qld.gov.au/news-events/news/how-to-protec… there’s been a whole lot of public health information on this over the years. Honestly I think the wedding I went to may have given me tinnitus, lucky it doesn’t bother me, not sure if I had it before but only noticed it since.

        • Yup ear protection is like sun protection. You can get away with not, but you still risk damage. Sorry about the tinnitus, it's a bugger!

OP consider secondhand clothing being sold through gumtree or similar

  • Lots of stuff on fb marketplace worn once. Id start there. Indian clothes shop are generally overpriced. Buying online can be hit or miss. A lot of sites what you get does not match pics so be careful
