I have one of these. It's fun to look at and play with but is pretty useless when trying to light up a campfire

    • +4

Will set alight paper and fire starters no problem. They work in the same fashion as a matchstick. Better even.

Do you have this open top version, or the one that looks like a horse shoe on top? The later IS indeed useless…. far too restrictive opening for anything other than a cigarette.

    • I also have a similar one. It works ok for candles, but other things are hard to ignite with it.

These make the worst high pitch coil whine.
Within 10m, and undamaged hearing, expect to have ear pain.

    • +2

You must have had a faulty one. I own a couple of these and none of them give anything described as you have.
And before you say it must be your hearing, I use these for Scouts and none of the kids complain about ear pain from high pitched noises.

        • +5

Of course not. I've just replied to two negative comments on a product I've been very happy with.

          • +1

@UFO: Agree UFO - I have bought four of these (for me and gifts) and 100% satisfied.

      • +1

Fair enough, but it'd be faulty dozens then.
Various shaped and sizes of these were very popular back in 2010 and every bloody teenage smoker had one; so you'd be around 10+ of them every night you went out.
I imagine they must have just been all from the same factory, despite being different brands then.

I myself went though at least 5 designs trying to find one that didn't make the squeeling noise, but none found yet.
Playing with my musical teslacoil, I think it might even be a byproduct of the arc size…. perhaps they refined it? That'd be nice :)

I'll buy a few more of these ones on your advice, and see how I go. :)

        • Unless you've got bionic hearing or something? :)

In all seriousness mate, I think you'll be fine. I'm the type that can hear mozzies in the room and no one else can and then I hunt them… I believe I have very attuned hearing ;). These lighters make a humming/electrical noise, but nothing that I would consider excessive or painful.

          • @UFO: Yeah, Im one of those people who can tell when the neighbour turns on a TV.

There are so many high pitch noises I fear designers who are older or abused their hearing, overlook.

Im not looking forward to the day when electric cars are more common, eesh.

Best advancement recently was moving to fast chargers. 9v or above are near silent, unlike 5V chargers. Being able to charge a phone in the same room as me was a nice upgrade. Lol.

How long can the unit be stored, charged, without battery degrading/going out?

    • I top mine up before going on a weekend scout camp and they run fine for the whole trip.

They are still working fine when left in storage after a month or two, but I top them up before leaving so I can't tell you how much power they have left.

For under $15 you can't expect it to last forever, but mine have been going well for a couple years now.

This was posted last month for $13.19.

    • +1

That's the useless horseshoe design UFO mentioned

      • Yep…. don't go with that type. Very restrictive opening. The open top version can be positioned far easier.

  • are there any other alternatives for a windproof lighter?

    • -3

      Yes for $2.83

      • This is just a standard lighter? Might as well buy a disposable one.

      • not even the same product other than they're lighters.

the one you linked is $2.83+5.46 shipping, then 10% tax= AU$9.12

as smartazz104 says, your argument is then you can just buy disposal for <$1…

don't care for the product here, but at least compare it to something more similar

        • Sorry my only excuse is I was still drunk at the time

  • I wanna try one I really do but (Tens of thousands of monitoring) makes me edgy

    • Whatever it's cheap anyway got black

      • -7

How do you think it’s cheap when you can get one for $2.83 somewhere else?

        • +1

Your one uses butane this is battery

        • +3

Not the same and you also "forgot" to add shipping $5.46 unless you can get shipping free somehow.

          Total is $8.29 not $2.83

Don't care which one you buy, just facts.

  • -1

gone up in price already - less than one hour.

  • Thanks for the head's up - got the orange one as it should be a little easier to find when I want it. Always wanted to try one of these for lighting the campfire etc and this was a decent price so will see how it goes.

OK, all good. Free delivery if you have prime membership

  • 'Plasma'

Anyone know if these things can be used to melt the ends of nylon rope?

    • -2

A normal lighter can do that, no need to spend this much.

      • Matches can too. I just want to know if this thing is useful for other tasks while camping.

        • I was just answering the question in your 1st comment. Not sure why I received 2 negs for trying to help you save money & stating a fact.

  • OK So FWIW the lighter turned up. The box it was in didn't quit fit but whatever. Already had a charge, and works fine - happily set fire to the Amazon packaging it came in, so should do what I want which is to light kindling for the BBQ etc. No high pitched noise, decent size arc. No indication as to how much charge there is, but I always have some means of charging things so not a problem - at worst there would be a ten minute delay before it had enough charge to light something. No hunting for matches or lighters with gas, or mucking around with flints etc. I call this a win.

  • Ah crap… meant to buy this the other day & it’s only $2 discount now.
