I needed a new printer for the kids school and came across this deal that started 30/05. Seems to good to be true. A printer delivered for $87 and $25 cashback via redemption doubled to $50 if you also subscribe to Instant Ink, which just happens to be a free trial for 6 months. So basically $37 for a printer and all the printing you can consume for 6 months.

  • You still need to pay for the ink (50% off), though the monthly $1.99 fee is waived for first 6 months.

    • +4

HP instant ink subscription is pay by the month for allotments of printing credits with rollover too. On the free 6 month trial you can select the highest plan of 700 pages per month and print up to that many pages for free. You supply the paper. HP send you ink continuously as you print to ensure you never run out. You can print full colour A4 photos if you want. I went through at least 4+ extra extra large ink cartridges in my 6 months and printed hundreds and hundreds of pages. Ended up printing my own wrapping paper in full colour just to burn through credit. Buying that ink normally would have cost a fortune.

      • +8

cut the trees to burn the credit?

        • Not sure why you were down voted. Here is an up vote.

        • Not really. I use the stuff I print.

    • +12

I, for one, hate the idea of subscription based hardware. Yes, offices have had leased laser printer services for years, but that’s a managed service, not a subscription.

There’s already a horrendous level of waste in the printers industry - what happens in three years time and the program has been wrapped up?

If you really want to see subscription hardware done bad, look up Juicero and Bob Casette dishwasher. Both of these introduce more waste to the environment, cost an order of magnitude more than the alternative, and only superficially solve a user’s problem.

Also, who in their right mind believes that connecting your dishwasher, printer or juicer to the internet is a good business model?

      • I mis-read at first, but it's actually a good idea: print your own wallpaper ;-)

  • +41

Word of warning, the "e" series printers are DRM protected and will not accept third party cartridges or refills. They also need to be connected to the internet so they can 'ping' home to HP servers.

    • +15

Ugh I was keen on this but it sounds like a deal-killer for me… An excuse to generate e-waste.

      • -1

Sorry, but can you elaborate “an excuse to generate e-waste” ?
How does subscription based lead to more waste ?

        • +9

You buy this then put it in the bin in 6 months when the subscription runs out.

Hardware should be expensive and ink cheap. Fix the landfill these fkers make. Short of legislation this won't happen.

        • Obviously the person above is referring to the DRM protection that prevents third-party cartridges

        • +9

          Read @julz's comment below

"Bin the printer after the 6 months free ink.
Aftermarket ink would cost you more time, effort and money. 700*6 months is 4200 pages of full colour A4 photos you could print using genuine HP ink.. all for under $40. Less than 1c per page. No way aftermarket ink is that cheap"

So yes this is going to generate a lot of e-waste as we can see people are already planning on binning this printer after 6 months.

      • +2

Totally, the kind of wastage needs to be legislated out of existence.

  • +1

Title must have price before cashback.

  • +2

No use if can not use refilled cartridges

    • -6

    • Really? Unlimted printing for 6 months for only the price of $37 and you are saying its no use?

      • +5

not the person you are replying to, but for me, I only print a couple of pages per month when I actually need, so this won't be good for me. I've got a laser printer and it will last me a few years of printing from the original cartridge.

  • +8

Careful - the printer may be good value but as stated above, they do not accept third party cartridges

  • +13

Man it can not be good for the environment that it's basically easier to buy a new printer every time i need to print something.

    From T&C:

Must complete Instant Ink signup within 7 days of setting up the printer with the HP-recommended setup process as indicated in the instructions that came with your printer. Unless service is cancelled within the promotional period online at www.hpinstantink.com, a monthly service fee, based on the plan chosen, plus tax and overage fees will be charged to your credit/debit card. Customer will be charged for any overage fees and applicable taxes at the end of each month in the promotional period. Use of in-box ink or toner cartridge is included in period of offer. One offer redeemable per printer. Included months offer with Instant Ink subject to change after 10.31.2022. Offer cannot be redeemed for cash. Setup Offer may be combined with other offers; see terms and conditions of the other offer for more details. Requires a valid credit/debit card, an email address, and Internet connection to printer. See additional offer information available during online signup process. For service details, see www.hpinstantink.com.

    • I don't understand your highlighted section

Customer will be charged for any overage fees and applicable taxes at the end of each month in the promotional period.

what kind of excess fee are you expecting? So if i choose 100 pages / month plan and use upto 300 I have to pay for the difference with the $300 page / month plan?

Use of in-box ink or toner cartridge is included in period of offer.

So the included ink cartridge is part of the subscription?

      One offer redeemable per printer.

What offers? (seriously, I don't understand what offer)

Included months offer with Instant Ink subject to change after 10.31.2022.

and the subscription plan may be reviewed/changed after 31st October?

      • what kind of excess fee are you expecting? So if i choose 100 pages / month plan and use upto 300 I have to pay for the difference with the $300 page / month plan?

If you choose 10 pages / month plan, then use 100 pages that month, you will get charged the excess. Not sure how much… just like monthly mobile data quota.
As mentioned by another comment, better pick highest plan during free trial.

So the included ink cartridge is part of the subscription?

Correct, so you're expected to finish the ink coming with the printer first before they're sending anything

What offers? (seriously, I don't understand what offer)

6 months free of Instant Ink offer that you've been clicking and reading in this thread

and the subscription plan may be reviewed/changed after 31st October?

HP might review their inclusion of the plan

The Samsung mono laser I paid $60 for 14 years ago is still going strong. Must have printed 1500+ pages on it. Only thing I've ever bought for it are cheap ebay replacement cartridges.

    • +2

Try telling the kids they can only print in grayscale….

      • Kids are allergic to printing anything anyway

HP are a garbage company that make garbage products, I'd hazard that at least 50% will be in landfill in a year.

Suggesting alternate products seems pretty relevant to me

      • +1

I have had so many great product suggestions from reading these comments so not sure what the problem is in offering alternatives.

HP are notorious for making it difficult to use aftermarket cartridges.

        • I wouldn’t touch their laptops with a 6 foot pole either. Not sure how they are surviving as a company. Their products are subpar

          • +1

@Pricebeat: Their business and enterprise products are fine. I have a 20 year old hp laser photocopier that refuses to die, also can use reconditioned toners.

Their consumer products on the other hand are absolutely garbage.

          • @Pricebeat: Agree, poor build quality. Battery conks out just after a year so no more warranty.

        • A10 year old printer bought for $60 isnt an "alternative" for someone looking at a (colour) printer.

Something thats available now at todays prices, would make more sense. Which was the point I was indirectly saying.

As for HP printers - I would agree would both on that score

          • @RockyRaccoon: True. I think though that good connectivity/ability to scan, can be just as important as colour.

    • Same here with my Laser color xerox.

    • My HP colour LaserJet from this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/72849 is still going reasonably strong too. Almost ten years now!

    • Same here with my Brother inkjet. Bought it in 2011 and it costs around $12 total to replace all 4 cartridges with 3rd party eBay stuff:
      https://www.inkstation.com.au/any-4-brother-lc39-compatible-…

      • This is still a good deal IF you plan on printing heaps within 6 months. Genuine ink is also far superior to refills. I've been through 3rd party ink on my old brother and Canon and yes it's cheap but it too dries out within a year and needs replacing. Worse part is a clogged print head. The HP cartridges replace the print head each time

        • Agreed on the quality of refill ink. From memory the official Brother cartridges gave better results. I guess it depends on your user case, we just need some household docs and stuff for the kids.

  • +10

I bought this printer a few months back. I hate it.

    • Why ?

      • Constantly having to adjust the paper and the print quality is average.

        • Not sure why but mobileprint quality sucks. Try from PC and adjust driver settings. Day and night quality difference

  • good deal if you are printing more than 37$ worth of stuff in six months, or want to print a lot of photos.

    • I'm yet to see any printer that prints well enough to justify home printing, over paying 10cents to get them done at HN/KMart/etc. Including expensive laser printers at my office.

      • You can get far better prints at home, you will need to spend closer to 60c a print though for good quality papers and ink I use the discontinued Canon TS8060 which uses 6 ink cartridges, expect to spend around 200 on a printer if you care about photos.

This is the paper I use and recommend is Canon's Paper Plus Glossy II

  • does the printer oders ink automatically or will we get constant supply of ink if we don't use it. looking to keep catridges and use over the year after caceling sub after 6 months

    • +1

Ink is delivered as you consume but locked to the printer only usable during a valid subscription

      • humm not sure if i can print 700 pages a month.

        • +3

humm not sure if i can print 700 pages a month

          Well, not with that attitude…

      • only usable during a valid subscription

Whaaaa, so they can render the printer useless if you stop subscription after 6 months trial.
        That's so sus

  • Awesome deal!

  • Nice. Direct from hp

Do yourself a favor. Epson Inktank printer. Bought one for the office and one for home. Costs next to nothing to run and gives okay (not professional but good for school projects and office hand outs) quality.

    • A word of warning on these tho.
The ones without replacable maintenace cartridges have built in obsolesce (ie one day, they will just refuse to print). You really have to dig into the manual to work out which do and which don't (the 'cheaper' ones in the range generally don't).

      • I'm learning so much about printers this morning. Had to google what a "replaceable maintenance cartridge" was…..

"This user replaceable maintenance cartridge is an essential component of your printer. It absorbs ink used in print head cleaning cycles, as well as excess ink overspray while your printer is in use."

Apart from the obvious answer (to sell more printers) why the hell would a manufacturer be so reckless to the environement and sell a printer where this component couldn't be user replaced.

        • +1

Yeah I learnt about them when I was about to go ecotank and was doing some pre-purchase checking. This vid was revealing and I found it funny https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AA3wOmujZHA

In the end, didn't go the ecotank route as:
          - the ones with a replacable maint cartridge and paper tray (ET-4850) was $500+ for not 'great' print quality. The ET-3800 has a replacable cartridge too I think, but rear paper feeding didn't suit my purposes. The ET-4800 does NOT have one as don't cheaper ones in the range
          - the ones with better pigment inks and therefore decent print quality (ecotank pro range) started at $600 (ET-5150). Bit much for a home printer. The photo range of course is even more.

FWIW I went a Kyocera P5021cdw colour laser, the compatible toner looks ok and never needs a drum replacement. Gave up scanning and the ability to print the odd photo, but TBH my phone and office lens do a fine enough job of the odd scan and if I need to print the odd photo at a store so be it.

          • @3v3rqu357: I couldn't find information to support the Kyocera P5021cdw never needing a drum replacement. Do you have any info on this?

            Cheers,

      • Brother inkjets had that too, I just took it apart and cleaned the ink discard tank and then disconnected the moisture sensor for when the tank is near full. The tank was not even 1/5 full when the moisture sensor was tripped and refused to print.

By disconnecting the sensor i mean dislodged from the usual location so ink won't ever reach it.

    • Down side is ecotank printers cost significantly more to purchase initially, but if you print enough you will quickly outweigh that outlay in ink savings.

    • I looked but last time I checked they were $400+

  • +11

Don't buy this printer it's a joke. It won't let you print unless you're subscribed to their ink system if the printer has ink or not. That and the printer itself is landfill. It rarely works without throwing out one or two pages with errors. The scanner works fine but the auto feeder at the top the trigger struggles to recognise when you've put in multiple sheets of paper.

This product is a horrible monolith to e-waste. Avoid it at all costs!

    • Are you serious? Where is that explained on the product page?

  • +8

e-waste - tell HP and their DRM where to go.

  • +3

I feel even if this is a good deal, I'll be contributing towards landfill in about a years time :).

Anyone aware of deals on laser printer?

  • Cunning subscription marketing like Microsoft Office and big brother internet monitoring connection to HP central.
    Baiting the hook.

    • subscriptions are the future with Windows Gaming / Xbox passes.

      • Yes their future. You don't have to participate.
We dropped Xbox Gamepass, much happier with Epic, Steam etc on PC.
Windows Excel 2010 or 2016 is fine, or Apache OpenOffice is free.

        • yeah not a big fan of cloud gaming myself. prefer to have the hardware

  • +4

When did purchase of a printer get so complicated? 😆

    • +1

I know right… who'd have thought my simple post would bring all the home printing aficionados out of the woodwork. How about I report back in 6 months time the status of the printer and how much I spent/saved :)

  • This would be handy to run off full colour glossy flyers for 6 months.

  • +5

Do not buy HP printers, Do not buy HP printers, Do not buy HP printers, Do not buy HP printers, Do not buy HP printers, Do not buy HP printers, Do not buy HP printers, Do not buy HP printers.

They are worse than ever - apparently some drivers need to talk back to base all the time now over the cloud, the 3'rd party cartridges are harder than ever to work with.

    Don't do it.

If you need black and white, buy the Brother 2xxx series around $200 at most, lasts practically forever.

HP is done, their name in printing is finished.

  • Is there a way to hack it? Maybe spoof your own HP server and redirect traffic to it in your own home. Or a new driver?

  • +4

Downvoted for the negative environmental impact of this so-called 'deal'.

  • so how does the ink supply thing work? the printer will automatically order the ink as you run out? Can i manually order the ink and stock it for later use ?

    • You can't stockpile ink. It orders in advance based on printing habits. You will always have enough ink on hand unless you attempt to print 700 pages in one day. Active subscription needed to use ink.

  • $86 at Harvey Norman with same deal

    • -1

Including delivery? You'll spend a lot more than $1 in petrol unless you're living in the HN home department.

      • +1

If someone doesnt want to wait for that long, it's an option.

  • -4

Super glad to see that Ozbargain has gone slightly to the left in line with the recent Federal Election. We should have a mandatory field for new deals to ensure they meet the OzEnvironment seal of approval.

I'm all for reducing waste and this is likely the last printer I'll ever buy to get my kids through the last year or so of school. I haven't printed a page myself in about 3 years.

    • +1

I have a wedding coming up so I am printing all invites either way!

    • +1

Not sure if this was sarcasm or not but why should voting preference have any impact at all on whether you try to look out for the environment? Regardless of your political alignment, we all share the same planet.

Pretty clear they're flogging these printers off to get people onto their subscription service, where they make their real profit. Look beyond the juicy deal, I implore you.

      • As much as it hurts buying this printer, I also feel I am saving a lot. This will allow me to use it as a scanner post the 6 months mark which I usually need for variation things.

I usually scan all my thermal printed receipts which disappear after a while.

Plus I was going to print a lot for the next 6 months at Officeworks, so I think it's a win-win for m, both financially and environmentally.

        • +1

This will allow me to use it as a scanner post the 6 months mark

Up until HP decides that scanning is only available through their InstantScan subscription

  • If someone is looking to print a lot in the next few months, https://www.harveynorman.com.au/hp-officejet-pro-9010e-all-i… is a much better deal.

$100 cashback from HP + $50 from HV + 6 months of ink

    • Not bad for 48$, but HV GC meh

      • I will just buy photo and sticker paper with that $50GC

  • Besides e-waste, is there any catch in the fine print that we cannot read?
Out of pocket for this printer will be $37 and you can choose 6 months of 700 pages plan? resulting in printing cost of $0.008 per page

    Surely we are missing something
    Am I reading it right?

  • -1

    Dont forget shopback

  • +2

I was actually looking at this printer but I did some research on it (and like many other OPs said before), this printer is not environmentally friendly and basically a troublesome to buy third party inks from InkStation etc

I pulled the trigger and bought a Brother laser jet instead

    • Good move. I bought a mono duplex Brother laser at the start of WFH (I got the one with the scanner, the HL-L2395DW, because it wasn't much more at $214 from OfficeWorks, and I actually use the scanning much more than I though it would), and its running costs are minimal (non-OEM toner cartridges off eBay), so basically it was most just the upfront cost (which is how a consumer-friendly printer should be priced, not on this subscription stuff). Turn all firmware updates off, and refuse to update the firmware - the firmware updates on printers nowadays are NOT your friend, they're to try to make it harder to use unbranded cartridges - and it just works with everything (Mac OS, iOS, Windows 10, Linux, Android), runs great, and just does its job - very happy with it.

      • Exactly, I bought the HL-L2305W from Officeworks too and I’m still on my “free” toner that came with the printer haha
Third party inks on Amazon doesn’t cost much (~$20 for black toner)
