Cheapest Electricity Provider for Victoria?

Hey Guys,

I just received an email from ReAmped telling me there’s cheaper options now and to look for a new provider.

Hoping someone here can suggest a decent provider.

Thank you

    Nectr

    • +1

      Thank you

    • +5

      They don't offer plans in Victoria.

      • Bummer. Sorry

    • If Nectr is the cheapest, why isn't it coming up on energymadeeasy.gov.au? Any idea?

      • They stopped accepting new customers last night (likely due to an influx of Reamped customers) - this is probably why. They don't appear on the comparison anymore for me either.

        • Funny how an influx of ReAmped customer (which itself is a small provider) can bring them down. Probably shows they aren't ready for scale. lol

  • Literally just read that email now - Tells you to compare on EnergyMadeEasy

    Thoughts on this gov't run comparison website?

    • +6

      More diverse than meerkats

      • +1

        Yeah but I assume these prices are indicative before the change, subject to contract terms.

        Also for VIC I found this site

        • +7

          Vic govt has their own website

          At national level, there is energymadeeasy.

          Both are not commission based, so good websites.

          The price they have is todays price. No other websites publish their future prices. Existing member may get an advanced warning

          So these are my thoughts

          • @avoidfullprice: Hahaha pretty detailed thank you.

            I haven't had the time to check my emails until tonight…

            Do you know if there's a "date" where they all flick over? Or just depends on the retailer and what date they set?

            • +1

              @Brodo Faggins: So don’t quote me, but first change likely with effective 1july. However over the year retailers update their pricing to lure new customers… so hard to guess if no lock in pricing remains cheap after the change

  • +3

    Tango have always been the best for me.

    • In the South East that is my find too. Reamped was actually the same rate when I checked in February so maybe we are in for a shock (excuse the pun)

  • +1

    Unless its a fixed long term with a price locked in they'll all go up wont they?
    I've compared other retailers at https://compare.energy.vic.gov.au/ and the likes of, eg: Simple Energy who in my case are offering the same current price as ReAmped, are just as likely to increase their prices in a few weeks time as well.

    edit: Lumo has a rates locked in offer til Aug 2023.

    • +1

      I'm looking for these magic fixed price fixed term contracts too, and noticed on Lumo's that one of the conditions under which they can increase their rates is, "if you agree". Dodgy wording - I can see a price rise coming with a "well, if you don't agree, you can leave" get-out-of-jail-free card for them to play. Argh.

    • Fixed rates is a real question mark for me. If a company is actively losing money they will find a way to get out of it.

      Sure you make up the loss on customers not on those rates, but if everyone jumps on fixed what happens?

  • +1

    Yeah I’ve just tried the compare website and I’m not keen on alinta and simply energy at all.

    I currently pay $70 a month in a 3 bed Townhouse.

    • That's cheap as chips. I'm $110/m for 2br

    • Wow. Power is cheap in Victoria

      • +1

        Because brown coal has not international market. Doesn't stop them making excuses to raise the default offer by 5%

    • Which company you with?

  • any recommendations for someone in NSW?

    • Nectr :)

    • I compared quite a few and AGL came out on top for us in Sydney.

  • +2

    Makes literally no sense to me why you would stop taking new customers and ask your customer base to go away.

    • +2

      Maybe they know they’re about to tank and have a conscious

      • +1

        Nah not about to tank - I watched a FB vid from the CEO - he's hinting that they will have to charge 100% more (double current rates) when the change occurs (sounds like the industry is forcing them to) - and he's trying to help us by giving us the warning before it happens.

      • +2
        • yes, it has something to do with the anticipated pricing. for everyone that didn't get ramped's email, they attached a graph of Qld's 'baseload futures contract' calendar. https://imgur.com/a/D7KSjyW
          I have a peanut financial or economics brain, but it still makes somewhat sense to me.

  • +1

    Just a note with Globird. If there is a credit, make sure you contact them as they will happily keep the credit until you contact them.

    • Can confirm this . Was all good until I did switch .

    • Same with Momentum Energy Sent them the second reminder !

  • +1

    Just got that mail too. Last time I chose reamped, I tried https://wattever.com.au/ and switched from there, got 50$ gift card too. I am currently in Queensland, which is the cheapest plan? Anyone know?

    • +1

      Nectr. 18.92 + 88c day inc GST. Locked in for 12 months 💯

      • +1

        Is that for Queensland?

        • Yes SEQ

          • @modsec802: From their website or some other compare website?

            • @Pokharabluez: I found them via the govt one (energy made easy) but it should be on their website also. I can’t post it here but I have a $50 referral sign up thing for each of us if you want one DM me.

      • +1

        Just checked their site. They aren't accepting new customers.

        • Oh wow - must be overloaded!

  • +5

    Man they are serious, just got a text message telling me to check the email.

  • +1

    Am on vic energy compare right now. It’s coming up with QEnergy.
    Supply 49.06c p/d & usage 18.34c p/kWh. Cheaper than my current ReAmped rates.
    Compare.energy.vic.gov.au

    • But I had trouble signing up haha keeps showing an error message.

      • Did that a couple of times to me. Just went back to the start again then it progressed through the steps ok.
        Seems like another smaller retailer. I half expect to get another email soon from them saying their rates are going through the roof….
        Whilst competition is obviously good and the Govt is very quick to say “just shop around”, I am getting really jack of the utility market ping pong prices and having to constantly shop around…

        • After you signed up to Q Energy, did it take a while to receive an email from them?

          • +1

            @shockme79: Yeah about 5-10 mins for me

          • +1

            @shockme79: Yes same as Joshhhy about 5-10mins after completing the sign up

            • @BeamMeUp: Strange…. I went through the process yesterday evening, and got to the final screen that said to check my email but I still haven't received any email?

              • +1

                @shockme79: Hey I signed up with last night and only got an email around mid-day today.

    • They seem to be cheapest, but I'm concerned with their reviews. Would rather pay a little extra a year for good customer service

    • No more. They are now more expensive than RAE.

  • -1

    Do we need to pay a disconnection fee? Maybe they want some quick cash?

    • No. But if you dont have a smart meter, the distributor will send a person out to do a special read. You will have to pay that.

      • How can I know if my meter is smart or not?

  • +2

    I moved to Simply Energy for now since it's showing the cheapest rates for me. It's not a contract though - I couldn't find any decent provider offering contracts.

    • -1

      Energy Australia looks to be offering pretty competitive rates for where I live in South East Melb, on a 12 month contract - look for "Total Plan".

  • +2

    Try Future X Power.. they appear to be very competitive.

    Depending who your supplier is, Q Energy is another one which is offering similar rates to Reamped.

    The way to get cheap electricity bills is to not use so much electricity. I notice some people nowadays have a whole household full of electrical gadgets (TVs, lights on in nearly every room, air con, heaters/fans, computers, chargers, cooking implements) on almost full-time in the evenings. It's just ridiculous.

    Nowadays I never use lights at night, except a single light for cooking, and a small light for reading in bed. I use solar lights along the windows. I also sleep early, and wake up early, so I have less need for electric lighting. I never use a heater (wear warm clothes instead, and keep active), never use a fan or air conditioning (open windows, and stay thin/fit instead), I moved to a smaller apartment and got a 5-star energy-efficient fridge.

    As a result of all this, despite working full-time from home, my energy bills have dropped from $300-$400 per 3 months, to $130 per 3 months.

    • +8

      So you live like a troll? All that effort to save a couple hundred bucks? not everyone lives alone in a cold dark apartment with their precious.

      • +1

        Nope, I live normally. Not sure if you know, but the sun rises at 6-6.30am (4.30-5.30am in summer), and shines all day until 5pm (8pm in summer).

        I have a bright, light-filled apartment all day. At night, I'm usually at the pool/gym, or eating dinner with my girlfriend, or watching a movie/TV series with her. Then I sleep early. What do I need electric lights for? I didn't consciously decide to stop using lights at night. It just never occurs to me to turn them on. Whenever I switch on an overhead light, the room seems too bright. Much nicer to have a bunch of solar lights along the windows.

        Also, I feel better wearing warm clothes and keeping active, instead of permanently curled up on a couch in thin pyjamas/T-shirt with the heater blazing.

        Anyway, it saves me at least $1k per year. And I know some families have $500-$1k electricity bills every 3 months. This is something they could consciously do something about if they wish.

        • Do you have those incandescent lights?

          Even for a cheap led light at 10W it is quite bright for a room. Leaving it on for a day consumes 0.24kWh, a year is 87.6kWh. At my peak electricity rate of 30c/kWh that comes to $27pa. But if you don’t use it during day time the estimate drops to about $15pa. LED lights not have hard on the electricity bill.

          Heating and cooling cost will be highest contributor. Congrats on saving 1k on that.

          • @avoidfullprice: Energy-efficient fridge/washing machine should save a lot too. Also, not owning a pool.

    • +1

      This is extremely naive. Live in cooler climates then talk.

      • +4

        Seems like they are from Melbourne.

        It isn't impossible in an apartment because you share walls with others which basically your neigbours are your insulation. My CBD apartment 2BR averages about $60 per month.

        Problem is the body corporate fees that kills you at $4k - $5k a year if not a whole lot more if you are in low rise or luxury buildings.

        • -2

          The fear of body corporate is irrational and doesn’t consider the full picture. Compare what you would normally pay for a house. For that $4k-$5k body corporate you’re getting insurance, maintenance and cleaning. These would cost you at least several $k/year for a house. You may also get facilities like pool/gym/garden/bbq/sauna/security, etc., all of which are cleaned and maintained for you. If you owned a house with a pool, cleaning and running the pool would cost you at least $1k-$2k per year.

          Your council rates will also be lower because apartments are cheaper than houses. This will save you about $1k per year.

          • @ForkSnorter:

            For that $4k-$5k body corporate you’re getting insurance, maintenance and cleaning

            And not being able to do anything other than within the walls of your apartment.

            • @netjock: Yeah, well, that's what you give up if you want cheaper housing or convenient inner-city living. There are always pros and cons to everything.

              All things weighed up, I'd probably choose a house, but not if I have to give up my freedom and peace of mind by taking on 3 decades worth of debt.

              You can get bargain apartments nowadays with high quality modern interiors if you look around. A similarly high quality house would probably cost much much more.

              • @ForkSnorter:

                You can get bargain apartments nowadays with high quality modern interiors if you look around

                Yeah I got 2 so I know what it is all about.

                All things weighed up, I'd probably choose a house, but not if I have to give up my freedom and peace of mind by taking on 3 decades worth of debt.

                Got one of these too. Should have bought long time ago but took the plunge. It depends. I bought just over 3x my salary (the apartments take care of themselves) and that is 20kms from Melbourne CBD on a block big enough to build 3 town houses.

                I find the problem is people ask how much they can borrow to the mortgage broker they'll take that plus some more (if they can fake the paperwork).

    • +1

      What a sad way to live. I'll spend the few cents to run LED lights and have my HOME feel liveable not like a cave. People really blow the importance of electricity costs verse the very real improvements in comfort its use gives in where it sits in the usual cost of living spread

      Not heating or cooling can actually lead to mold and other issues in your house as well.

      Out of interest have you done the same analysis of your eating and cut to just a cup of rice a day yet? You don't NEED more…

      • +1

        Like I said, I sleep at night when it’s dark, and wake up at sunrise when it’s bright. Why do I need a household full of bright lights for the 2 or 3 dark hours at night before I sleep? I’m usually eating or watching a movie/tv series, or reading in bed. A single small light is sufficient for any of these. Air con in appartments is only occasionally necessary if you get moisture when it rains, which I don't. I’m very comfortable.

      • Not worth it. It is like hermit lifestyle. Only works for the few.

  • +1

    I am also with Reamped in VIC.

    The issue I think is every provider is probably going to be increasing electricity costs soon so jumping now you might just experience the same rise as Reamped will give you if you stuck around.

    There are a few providers who guarantee their rates for a while e.g. 12 months which would be the type of plan to try get into to be immune to the rises, but you might be paying a bit more upfront until that happens.

  • -1

    Saying my energy cost $xx / month is sort of useless without knowing how much power you actually consume, a 2 bedroom unit will suck down juice if it’s running electric heaters and lots of stuff a 5 bed home can use very little if you’re frugal.

    Anyway, Elysian has been good for us in VIC (like nearly half what I was paying AGL which was very competitive last time I checked). They have a $80/month plan that includes the first 250kWh of power then pay as you go. 7am-7pm every day and their rates are lower and solar FIT is higher too. We are a high usage household so this all comes together to work for us but if your a lower user it doesn’t work out.

  • +2

    The Victorian Government comparison site showed Simply Energy Blue Perks currently cheapest. When they go up I'll change again. IDGAF about who has been "good to me" or whatever whoever is cheapest gets my business.

    The system is a joke after next state election Dan Andrews needs to buy the electricity market back it cannot make any sense to have all these retailers each with their own staff duplicated so many times over it is so much waste.

  • OVO Energy. You got $75 credit as a new customer too. But I am not with them. I am with Globird.I find this out from Comparison website.Good luck,

    • looks like they have a shopback deal for $100 also

      • +1

        check the rates direct vs cashback sites - I found for Tango that the plan going direct was cheaper than the CR/SB econnex plan

        • Almost all econnex offers on CR / SB offer $112 for dual fuel. If you choose to go down this path, the rates are atrocious (at least that is what I found).

          Also, take OVO Energy for example. I don't whether you can double dip their $75 credit welcome offer with CR / SB cashback. Will it work?

  • If the mouse plague moves south through to Victoria just get a number of running wheels and have the nice generate free electricity

  • +3

    The Victorian compare energy website has a $250 cash grant per household from 1 July just for using the compare site. Compare.energy.vic.gov.au

  • So I got an email from Lumo now but its welcoming me for GAS?

    I don't even receive a gas bill since I'm in an old apartment block so I definitely just signed up for electricity last night.

    Will have to ring them to work out what's gone wrong here

    • Ask them if they have an estimate of their new upcoming rates, given all the shit that's going on.

    • Lumo's gonna lumo :(

  • Who are people going with in NSW?

    • Credit to @tightass

      Red Energy’ Living Energy Saver Single Rate – Ausgrid
      Daily supply charge 81.38 cents/day
      General usage rates 21.98 to 22.31 cents/kWh

      energy australia no frills
      fixed
      Daily supply charge $0.726 per day
      Usage rates Peak usage per day Flat rate 24.2 c/kWh

      origin go
      fixed
      Daily Supply Charge 76.99 c/day
      Usage Charges Summer Peak Usage 23.87 c/kWh

      (for above - I've taken out his EA Total & Tango Basic options, as both peak & supply were higher).
      ~~~
      Additionally I found AGL Value Saver
      Daily Supply (for my area) = 77.957 c/day
      Usage = 20.548 c/kWh
      What's throwing me off is that fixed and var rates happens to be same rates?
      Also confusing, is their "Basic Plan Info" - it says: These prices for variable rate market contracts will change on 1 August 2022 if you sign up.
      But when choosing the plan it says: This is an ongoing market contract with a 12-month energy plan period.
      • I ended going with Alinta with $70 cashrewards.
        Pretty similar rates as above but get access to their rewards plan
        • Hey thanks mate - where does it say fixed? Can't seem to find anything on their product page… Cheers
          • @Brodo Faggins: It's a bit funny as it took me to an external webpage to show the rates.
            https://www.energymadeeasy.gov.au/plan?id=ALI13073MRE9&postc…
            • @Caped Baldy: Thanks - I've been here 100 times already LOL
              If you click on Additional Details tab towards the bottom - under the middle column "Billing and Pricing" it says: Prices are not fixed.
              I was hoping there was something on their site or contract that said specifically it was fixed hahah
              • @Brodo Faggins: Ahh I see. My interpretation is that the rates (in particular the feed in tariff) may change and we won't be grandfathered in at the old rates.
                From what I could see it's not a fixed term contract so we're welcome to leave at any time.
  • Australia has plenty of coal. Energy should be dirt cheap.
  • I am in same boat atm, which one you went for finally ?
