But you haven't posted one movie yet. You should just start with your first.

    • +13

This one seems like a good exception given it’s currently still at the cinema and 19 days away for free on Disney + is a massive savings. You could literally join D+ just for this movie and save the cinema ticket cost

      • +2

Not exactly the same, the movie experience will depend on your home theatre setup

        • +3

Again, home hifi and flat screens/projectors have become so cheap over the past 10 years almost anyone can have a great home theatre setup, or use a VR headset. I know it doesn't beat IMAX but there are a lot of benefits not going to hoyts/events vs at home theatre

        • +1

With the wide availability of huge screens now, its arguable that watching at home is better. I have a 120" projector and a 75" TV in my two living areas and prefer both to the movies. That said there is something about being around other people when watching, but that can also be a negative when you get idiots talking.

      • Massive, it's $8 at our local cinema with better sound and larger screen.

    • "Things just got out of hand"

    • This post just saved me $20!

  • +1

    Thanks op. Reminder set!

    • +1

Disney+ sure will push notifications to you

      • +1

you don't get it. Op was referring to the free World Wide Web.

  • +2

Never thought I'd hate a marvel movie so much, to me this is less of a promotion of disney+ and more of a deterrent.

    • Is it that bad ?

      • +9

I think it is yeh. I don't want to spoil anything for those interested but i can count 2 scenes in this that I think were cool (clearly Sam Raimi influences) and the rest was rubbish especially if you like Dr Strange as a character.

        non spoiler stuff:
Cumberbatch aside the acting was terrible, yes even Elizabeth Olsen phones this one in, even if she was better than most.
The visuals were cheap, with the second half of the film looking like it was shot on a phone.
The story forgets everything we know from previous movies, beit powers, the universe and mosly about the characters and their earlier development.
All the characters are dumb as hell, none have been depicted so stupidly in the past.

        • Oh damn, that suck, I'm glad I didn't get around to going to see it in the cinema !

          • +18

@TerryJustTerry: Just remember that for every movie that you truly love and think is a masterpiece, there's someone who comments on websites saying they hate it and not worth your time.

I've heard from plenty of fans that they love this movie and thought it was a lot of fun

            • +4

@DiscountForThee: True true, personally though I heard a tonne of praise for the first Dr strange and a lot more mixed or negative reviews for this one.

Will try to go into it with a open mind though :)

        • +3

Not sure how you got downvoted my guy. Your comments are on point.
Phase 4 Marvel has been an absolute Abomination, the 'Hawkeye' series notwithstanding.

        • +5

I thot I was the only one.

This was a dumpster fire of a movie. The Scarlet Witch character was so butchered and flip flops from earlier movies that her character in this movie makes zero sense. As for bad writing, think of a conversation that goes something like this:

Character A to Character B: Don't come nearer or my friend will use this special power that can only be done one specific way that can kill you.

Now guess what Character B does. Yes, it's that level of stupid.

          • +5

@jmi: Agreed. Came out of this movie very disappointed. Should not be called ‘Multiverse of Madness’ if it’s really just a continuation of WandaVision.

I watched Everything Everywhere All At Once the week before this landed. And I have to say, I liked that film much, much more.

          • @jmi: Also character A then proceed to use his non-superpower fist to try to punch a super duper power being lol. I like this movie but there are a lot of things that don't make sense

          • @jmi: I thought it was a decent movie but didnt enjoy it as a style. The scarlet witch behaviour felt an abrupt transition and didnt feel like the same character corrupted from previous movies (unlike Loki who had the opposite journey which was brilliant).

            • @Franc-T: I thought the whole movie was pretty terrible but this was my biggest critique of the lot - they may as well have just gotten a completely new character instead of one with years of character development and it would have had no difference.

Felt like more of a DC movie.

              • @pacman21: Did you watch WandaVision?

                • @Circly: I did, and I get the family story line. But that's a far stretch to killing every person in every dimension to have that family.

                  • @pacman21: I think it was that evil book. It basically turns you evil.. So from that angle it makes sense.

The scarlet witch isn't really Wanda… Look at how insane Dr Strange got by using the book.

                    • +1

@Circly: Yes, we get that I think, its just the transition was a huge jump from her making a mistake and being self-deluded in Wandavision to her being an out and out monster from the start.

                    • +1

@Circly: They really needed to show her fall with reading the book at a minimum, as it was the character effectively got completely replaced off-screen. Maybe she should have started with it and kept it a secret while they discussed warnings about it, because she was tempted by what it could give her, and eventually became that monster.

Instead it was an abrupt 180 from the ending of WandaVision which was too hard to swallow that quickly, and made the whole movie a confusing watch where I was hoping this was a multiverse Wanda or something, but it didn't do anything that clever.

Agents of Shield had some plots with the same evil book in Season 4, and it was handled much better, more like the ring from Lord of the Rings.

        • +2

          All valid points of criticism.

CGI didn't look good in several points, but suspend the disbelief and just enjoy what you can.

I enjoyed the overarching plot of Scarlet Witch and once the kids were involved, the tears started welling up. I think the 'family' part of the story really got to me. On that front, I think they did a good job to which I was satisfied and enjoyed the movie.

          Glass half full perspective.

      • +4

        I enjoyed it!

        • +1

          Ohh that good :D

          Out of 10 ?

and what would you rank the first one /10 ?

          • +3

@TerryJustTerry: I liked this better than the first one actually.

But it is a different type of movie.

The first one had a story and progression.

This movie is bam bam bam and things just happen one after another. But there are cool bits to it.

You need to a watch WandaVision and Loki before watching this though.

I wonder if those that didn't like the movie didn't watch those two series first?

WandaVision is kinda boring.. I'd recommend watching the last couple of episodes at least. The first 3 are a drag and don't contribute much. Or even better watch a summary on YouTube.

I'd say this movie was a 7.5/8 out of 10. It was definitely epic and a spectacle. Just the story telling wasn't as good.

            • @Circly:

You need to a watch WandaVision and Loki before watching this though.

Uggghhh. I haven’t even kept up with the movies since End Game. Zero interest in the TV series

              • +3

@FireRunner: Loki is good! That one is worth watching although you might be able to get away without watching it.

You won't know what's going on without watching/reading a summary of WandaVision though.

      • +4

Some people take superhero movies to seriously and forget to just enjoy themselves/have fun

    • +2

The most disappointing one I've seen. Could've been really fun if Raimi got full control. Was just so jarring going from clearly Raimi directed areas to Disney cooperate directed ones.

      • Could have been ok if every third shot in the last quarter of this movie wasn’t Benedict Cumberbatch hissing at the camera like my local MP.

  • +12

they'll have to pay me to re-watch this

    • Is it that bad ?

      • +4

Nah, it's like they phoned it in a bit. There's some great moments but it fell flat for me.

        • Cheers for the info :)

        • Is it as bad as the eternals?

          • +3

@Castcore: TBH I set my expectation too high so I felt disappointed. But still not half as bad as the eternals though.

          • @Castcore: Nah, but Shang chi was better than this.

            • @AEKaBeer: Wow must be a pretty bad movie then. Because I hated Shang Chi. The first half an hour of Shang Chi was decent so I thought it'll get better but it got worst. The end fight with the water dragon didn't make any sense.

Waste of actors like yuen wah cameo and a bunch of Asian American and Hong Kong actors that have played much better movies. Tony Leung was pretty much the star of the movie but even he's performance wasn't nearly as great as his previous work.

Anyway Shang Chi was total failure plot wise and definitely didn't deserve the praise that people are giving it. I would argue Black Panther was a way better origin movie.

            • @AEKaBeer: Now I really don't want to watch it as I felt Shang Chi was the worst movie/tv show in the MCU so far :(

          • @Castcore: I didn't hate Eternals but it was pretty forgettable. I think it was too ambitious trying to introduce and give like a dozen characters screen time.

          • +2

@Castcore: Nothing is as bad as The Eternals. It's the only Marvel movie I stopped watching after half an hour. I gave it a shot… and it was hard.

This one is a fun ride. Don't think too much about it. Yes, it's stupid, but it's fun. A bit of fan service, and bit of Raimi goodness.

    • @ribenaboy
hey boy, can i pay you with a bottle of ribena ?

  • Thanks op

  • +14

    Finally, a multiverse movie.

      • +5

        Every thong

        • +1

Missed opportunity to not have the foot caressing scene in thongs.

  • Perfect timing. I literally just bought tickets to go see it tomorrow, lol.

  • +1

Not my favourite and I felt it lacked a bit of substance but it was a wild ride which I still enjoyed. I'll watch it again

  • +3

Will watch to see how much they kept my boy Sam on a tight leash,

    • Brace yourself, his influence is there but he's not been allowed to shine in my opinion.

    • Would almost advise to avoid it completely. Theres some really cool Raimi stuff in it, but that stuff just makes you hate the other 75% so much more.

      • +1

I'd say the signature Raimi shots were excellent and makes the movie worth watching. More gore and horror would have been nice though. And I'm sure he pushed for it.

        • +1

I agree in part. They were really good and make it worth slogging through the rest.

But at the same time I've never been more annoyed at a Marvel film. The Marvel cliques and formula have never felt like they've held back the movie so much. It actually felt like 2 different movies. Creativity v the most bland overdone marvel tropes.

  • +11

You know what movie disappointed me, the new fantastic beasts, it was so f ING boring

    • Did you like the first one? On watching I felt it was for a younger audience than me, so didn't bother with the newer ones.

      • -1

I liked it until Johnny Depp appeared in it. Not that I have anything against him, just tired of him. The franchise stopped being about fantastic beasts and became the Grindelwart show.

    • The lack of Depp or just overall?

    • +2

Oh man, I thought the first one was a whimsical, but slightly underwhelming return to the Potter world. I figured hey, that's fine, they've got a foundation that they can build on now and the next ones could be great.

I was so bored in the second one I think I gave up 20 minutes in. Not even bothering with the new one.

      • I watched all three but only really liked the first, the second was meh and the third one was really dissapointing.

      • I can’t even remember what happened in the second one. The girl was someone auntie’s uncle’s grandfather’s cousin’s niece or something.

        • Spoilers if anyone cares.

we also found out the main antagonist is trying to stop Hitler so technically dumbledord wants the holocaust to happen.

  • What about the new Spiderman movie?

    • +3

Not for a while. It's that whole Sony/Marvel joint production which keeps its off D+ early. Apparently it's going on Netflix first in the US in mid-July then D+ at some point later

      • Apparently it's going on Netflix first in the US in mid-July then D+ at some point later

That'd be enough if you have a good VPN.

    • +1

Switched that off after 30min. All these movies have run there course and are so badly written

  • Free movie, thank you for the heads up!

  • So how are these deals if they come with the subscription?

    • They're not, but that's the standard set by mods on these sorts of posts so, naturally, people post them. As one user commented above, "Reminder set".

      • I ticked the ignore boxes months ago, and I still get spammed.

  • +2

Hell yeah, it's so hard to get to the movies now that I'm a parent. This is one of the best outcomes of COVID.

    • +1

And if you do manage to get to the movies you're probably not watching what you want to watch!

  • +7

    A terrible movie FYI.

  • +3

Don't understand the hate for this movie. I thought it was enjoyable and a lot more interesting than a lot of the cookie cutter Marvel movies recently especially visually. 7/10 for me.

    • +2

I thought it was just fine. Had my expectations set too high, the trailers looked amazing but it didn't really live up to them.

      • That's how I saw it. The final product didn't meet my hype but it was decent. 7/10 sounds about right

    • +2

Because the interesting stuff was about 25% of it and completely bogged down by the cookie cutter marvel stuff.

For me it was the wasted potential. You have unlimited potential 'multiverses' and what did they do with that? Actually nothing. Not a single interesting thing.

Little spoilers: Near the start they talk about a character that has 'the power to rewrite reality' and the following action siege sequence is literally the same shooting energy beams and energy shields that has been done 10000x times in Marvel films. You can do ANYTHING and you do that? It just felt completely shoved in my a Disney exec.

  • Was enjoyable, but poorly written movie. Would definitely recommend the watch, it's a fun movie. It's just not the level that people tend to expect from marvel.

    • It was worth the watch but it flowed really poorly and felt off.

  • +13

Everything Everywhere All At Once >>>>> Dr Strange for multiverse madness. ;)

    • Amazing movie

    • +1

I’m looking forward to watching EEAAO on one of the streaming majors.

      • +4

I encourage people to go see it on the big screen. There are a few scenes that are just too…nuts…for the small screen. I can't recall the last time I was so entertained in a cinema. Groups of movie-goers just bouncing off each other with fits of giggles.

Went straight into my top 10 movies of all time.

      • +1

The wait is almost over. It'll be on Amazon Prime (at least) on Wednesday.

  • How can it be that bad, imdb says 7.3

    • I feel like IMDb ratings have changed in the last ~5 years. I tend to subtract 1 from the score for a more accurate idea of quality.

  • +3

Third best multi-verse movie in the past year for me.

    • +1

How many multiverse movies have there been in the past year?

      • +3

Three by my count. Spider-man NWH, Dr Strange 2, and Everything Everywhere All At Once. Which isn't a lot but odd that's there three.
