    • No 5g with Belong yet :(

        • +1

4G can go faster than that.

I can get speeds into the Gbps with 5G

          • +1

@spaceflight: oh ok im still learning, NBN just seems to come up as a 5g connection so i thought 4g is slower than nbn

            • +1

@froogletom: 5 GHz Wi-Fi is not the same as 5G (5G is the fifth-generation technology standard for broadband cellular networks).

        • +3

          If it doesn't show "5G", it's not 5G

  • +5

My boost mobile gor 5G from yesterday, was wondering why ? Sweet.

    • what boost deal are you on?

      • +4

Boost 365 day pre paid 300$ plan.

    • +5

Still only 4G with my Boost SIM in my iPhone 12 Mini :(

      Edit: Restart fixed it!

Boost customers all going to the 5G trial soon, closing in September.

      https://boost.com.au/blogs/help-topics/5g-trial

    • Wow, I'm on Boost as well; great news! I'll find out if my sim is enabled in a couple of weeks when I'll move from Yackandandah to Melbourne, where there is 5G coverage

  • +9

A lot of the Telstra 5G network is running practically a re-badged 4G network anyway. A good article about the topic (across all telcos, not just Telstra):

    https://www.gadgetguy.com.au/low-band-5g-is-not-real-5g-perp…

If you are in a "real" 5G spot the speeds are awesome. Where you aren't, they are pretty pathetic, for example at my residence I have low-band 5G with Telstra that rarely tops 5Mbps on a speed test.

  • Well that sucks, I'm on postpaid :<

    • +1

All sim only post paid plans are getting 5G from 1 July.

  • +7

Might want to add that this is for Boost Mobile customers as well

    See: https://boost.com.au/blogs/help-topics/5g-trial

  • +4

Confirmed 5G active with Boost mobile after a restart

  • +1

My belong isn’t 5g I believe - and my phone doesn’t support it anyway - but I just got 118/120 up and down which is crazy and nothing like it used to be

    • +1

Really? Telstra wholesale is capped at 100mbps on 4G.

      • +1

Just got 118 down on Belong 🤷

        • +1

Just got 120 on ALDI, woah
I've noticed for the past month that on 4G it'll start at ~320 down and keep going down until about 100 and settle. Really strange behaviour

          • @noren7: Sounds like throttling?

            • @buckster: Yes but normally the 100Mbps cap would mean ~98 max, would never see anything over even for a second

      • I never remember it being that high at least a year ago

  • +1

Beats NBN FTTN by a mile for sure. I got 300/5 on 5G indoors whereas NBN is 75/27

    • That upload but is pathetic but. Upload is just as important for many WFH jobs. I’d honestly take the FTTN in that particular instance.

  • Still on 4g on my Telstra PrePaid Annual recharge, I have found 5G useless in my area, on my work phone with 5G I get 120Mbps down whilst on 4G I get 526Mbps down both with around 60Mbps up.

    • How much is the annual recharge?

      • $300

        • thanks, wasn't aware, had been doing $30/28 days :(

  • Now just need a cheapo Boost $30 kit for around $15 or less to try this.

Dont wanna be dealing with telstra directly

    • Try woollies/coles near you they usually have a boost prepaid $40 kit for $10.

      • nope not there, worst case scenario is https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/273955193034 but dealing with telstra directly
ehh bought one from eBay telstra directly but oh okay, anyway only $5 after the $10 voucher

    • -2

      Boost are Telstra

    • " To remain eligible for the trial, you simply need to continue to have an active recharge. "

Be careful - this wording suggests a mere starter kit might not be enough to be eligible for the trial - it might require a recharge too.

  • My Telstra prepaid plan expires in November…. Does it mean I won’t get 5G upgrade?

  • +1

You would need a 5G phone. Just saying.

  • 4G- ~50MBps
    5G- ~100-125MBps
    Others?

    • +1

      580 for me

    • +3

I get anywhere from 250 to 350mbps indoors with Optus 4G
Telstra 5G I get less than 30mbps indoors

Then i go to regional and I get 5mbps with optus and 600mbps on telstra 5G. Just all depends on location and what kind of towers are installed

    • 4G 300Mbps Pixel 6, Boost
      5G 800Mbps ZTE MU500 (X55), Telstra

      indoor, 3171

    • 4G - 99.3MBps
      5G - 742MBps

    • Telstra retail 4G, I'm getting 125Mbps in test, and 40 up. Good enough for me.

    • Was pulling about 700Mbps inside of a KFC just yesterday
      4G was about 70-100Mbps

    • 438/30 mbps on 4G in Lindfield, NSW. Never seen 4G that fast before

    • For my 5G

My optus was around 250-350 Mbps NOT MBps about 9 months ago, Vodafone right now is max 320 Mbps but more often it is like 130-170 Mbps.

Telstra Not sure have not gotten their service yet.

Optus/Coles Mobile 4G is like 62-100 Mbps, Vodafone 4G max upto like 70-130 Mbps on 4G. Cannot remember telstra 4G speed it was long long time ago I had telstra network.

      • Just ended up getting Telstra 5G max speed was 680 Mbps down, usually around 500-600 Mbps down
30-150 Mbps upload, usually around 40-60 Mbps Upload.

This is definitely way superior than Vodafone 5G but if it wasnt for the cost saving I'd probably switch to telstra. But again I dont honestly see myself actually desperately needing 600 Mbps + download constantly

  • does Belong have 5G too?

    • Not yet

  • Strange, i am using 5g on boost mobile from late last year. Boost uses telstra network.. what is happening here?

    • You on the $70 monthly plan?

      • No, i am on $150 annual plan

  • How generous of them.

    • +3

Hardly. Telstra needs to reduce congestion on its available spectrum and it makes no sense to restrict customers from more efficient 5G spectrum as they had been doing. It was nothing less than stupid greed to make people pay more for early 5G access before the inevitable open up.

      • -1

        This.

  • +3

Nothing against the OP, this is Telstra that I'm ranting against

Sorry i have to call bull$H!T on this because I have been on the $40 telstra for over 3 years with 5G enabled. 2 months ago they sent me a text message saying that from April onwards they would only include 5G for customers with $60 recharge or higher. Now they're just RE-ENABLING something that we've enjoyed in the past. Complete marketing crap.

  • -3

Nothing on Aldi mobile yet (also uses telstra network similar to boost)

    • +3

ALDI DO NOT use the same network as boost and Telstra

  • -1

No 5g signal here on Boost. I'm on the mid north coast, NSW :(

  • +1

Have to get a 5G phone first.

  • What's going on Telstra? I don't see the 5G thingy on my 5G Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus 512gb mobile with a 512gb sdcard with my Belong sim plan 😉

    • +2

      Not on Belong.

  • Fold 3, at home, no 5g 😔
    Postcode 3029

  • +2

Oh I thought it was just my booster shot kicking in

  • +2

Testing on s21 ultra. 15kms south of Adelaide.
    Telstra FTTN: 52/18
    Boost 4g: 362/28
    Boost 5g: 797/34

  • Pixel 6, Newport (3015, Melbourne's Inner West), with Boost: no 5g at all, even though Telstra's map has 5g coverage in my area. Go figure!

    • +1

      Did you try a restart?

      • Yep, restarted 2-3 times! :-)

        • Restart more. A few more times will give it a kick to go and get the 5g reception

  • Hmm not working for me, iphone 13 pro max on Boost Prepaid. I even restarted the phone. Right by Perth CBD.

  • Working for me got the text. Pixel 6.

  • -3

Anyone getting sick from the increased 5g?

    • +3

I'm getting sick of 5G conspiracy theories.

    • sick of youtube wafflers telling us that there was not enough research done!

  • What about the postpaid Small plan? :/

  • +2

Aren't Telstra jacking their prices up by $3-$5 pm soon? Saw this on the 7News last night.

  • -1

Intersex sufferers better sue Telstra for keeping them on the slow "Belong" network!!!

  • Any sign Woolworths mobile is testing 5G as well.

  • 5G just became available for me here in Perth. In 6060 postcode, 87/2..pretty lame. S22 plus.

  • How long does it take to get 5G on new activations of prepaid phones? ?

    • Never with a new service with Telstra Prepaid. I contacted Telstra support to ask them to enable but they would not, said to wait for a txt reporting 5g has been enabled.

      • i got it enabled by talking to someone over the app

  • Not got this on Boost yet. seems still rolling out
